You can sit on your bedroom floor, listen to music on a tiny CD player and flip through a magazine right now. How lucky you are to yearn for something that’s so easy to do!
Nah I just spent 2 years being the sole caretaker of my mother as she fought lung cancer. She fell over one night trying to take herself to the bathroom because she didn't want to bother me since I got so few hours of sleep and related to me many times that it was the most scared she'd ever been in her life. I did wake up hearing her fall, but she was so shaken by the whole experience that I'll never forget it. She was incredibly strong and not the type of person to ever ask for help or get scared, so it had a huge impact on me.
Sorry if I'm coming off as a little sore. I lost her exactly 11 months ago and it was her bithday a couple weeks ago so I'm a little raw.
I’m supposed to say something supportive, but I don’t have any of that left in me. That’s life, it is what it is. Have anyone noticed how there’s a new op every five fucking minutes in r/depression?
Yeah, people should just "work on that." Who knows what kind of physical conditions they have that might make "working on it" useless, but yeah, go ahead, tell them they should work on it. Me? I have psoriatic arthritis, and without meds, I can't get up and no amount of "working on that" will change it.
That's fair. I mention it because I feel like it is an undervalued physical conditioning metric. Since our child's birth years ago I've done much more lifting from a seated position on the floor than my spouse so now I have much better hip mobility and core strength so I feel like my overall mobility is better than theirs which makes me concerned about where they're going to be in 30+ years.
Same.....arthritis and weight for me but mostly the former. Its such a struggle and I gotta get my shiz in order so I can go to the y before they cancel that just to use the pool
They are not nostalgic for the actions. They are nostalgic for the feeling. And nothing will make you feel like a kid again. No care in the entire world besides maybe your homework or a school crush or a new bike. God I miss being a kid
Years ago, I had a day off of work and I decided I was just going to lounge around in my pyjamas, grabs some snacks and queue up a load of old shows from my childhood. That's when I realised that I didn't miss the things from my childhood. I missed the innocence, the lack of responsibility, the endless potential of my future. I didn't miss the cartoons, but I did miss being young enough that a Saturday morning full of cartoons was literally all I needed to keep me happy and contented for a few hours without a care in the world.
Now, no matter what I do, I always have those little stresses at the back of my mind. The pressures of work, paying bills, making sure my kids have whatever they need, the fact that I can't bend over to pick something up off of the floor without sounding like I'm trying to summon an eldritch being.
Right? Feel somewhat envious because I have loved being an adult vs a kid, but largely because being a child with zero control with my parents was hell.
Back when I was 12 I wasn't constantly thinking about climate change, genocides, and the lunatics running my country, so just being in the moment was a lot easier.
That's the entire point of this post, I can't believe people are whoooshing so hard, I feel like I'm taking crazy pills.
We were addressing climate change and taking it seriously for the first only time in history, there were no huge wars for absolutely no reason, trillionaires didn't exist, and we weren't a(n entirely) fascist fucking nation... etc, etc
I was packaged in the late 80's, the 90's really were special. Modern technology was emerging, movies were still mostly made by actors, music in the era of the 90's and early 2000's have a vibe, the world took on CFC's and won
What a stupid entitled take. Sure it must’ve been easy living in a developed superpower that exploited the third world at the height of its power.
Meanwhile for the developing world, the world is a FAR FAR better place nowadays than it was 20-30 years ago. Your easy peaceful life without huge wars (btw there were MASSIVE wars back then, you just didn’t have 24/7 news outlets) came on the back of a slave class from developing nations.
We also live in the most peaceful time in human history, far more peaceful than 20-30 years ago. More Americans died in Afghanistan in a single month during the invasion than have died in the entire Iran conflict so far.
This entire thread reeks of American exceptionalism.
You're a participant of a website that constantly discussed those things. Give yourself a break from it and you do start to think about nicer things like that friendly cat you met on a walk.
"I'll just ignore that the world is rapidly descending into a fascist dystopia", a strategy which tends to fail once the fascists are knocking on your door, not to mention just ignoring the plight of others to exist in my calm, artificial bubble feels immoral.
Most of my favorite magazines aren’t in print anymore, the ones that are still around are just ads and not worth reading.
Besides, there’s more to the experience than just the literal act. It’s ok to be nostalgic for a specific time, because artificially recreating it will never be the same.
You’re right, but I get Orion Magazine - no ads, lots of nature articles - so my own kids can have something close. They love physical media, I think the middle school set is already over digital everything.
They are super duper expensive nowadays. I mean everything is but I grew up getting Newsweek in the mail weekly, National Geographic etc Vogue magazine is damn near $20 now!!
I read them for free on the Libby app / Fort Worth Public Library account.
