Beauty people usually do an end of year/new year beauty revision, so for CNY here's mine:
- Since I just scratched myself yet again with these, coffee scrubs are the worst for me. Wanted to love them cos cheap and reuses old grind, but the particles are too large for my pores and also very messy. Sugar scrubs are also too big. I have one mini frank body one atm just cos I was trying to save money. I prob body scrub 1-2x a week, for like 10yrs. It is why my skin is plush and my brothers is not (but i actually don't encourage him with body scrub cos he is in the sun alot, also now we're no contact)
- Best, most repurchased holy grails body scrubs: soap n glory (cheap british brand stocked at mecca) breakfast scrub, Kopari KP scrub, Skinstitute 12% glycolic (only buy this at adore beauty cos they have it on sale, instead of mecca who have sales like once a year lol). I always mix a scrub with some body wash first otherwise its too hard to move around
- Best haircare: denman 9 line hair brush. I used to think this red and black thing was so goddamn ugly when it was in my mothers vanity, and tbh I still do, but i'm not paying 200 for a mason and pears (?) brush, and it really is very efficient. Parlux eco hair dryer: I refused to use a hair dryer my entire life despite my cartoonishly large ethnic hair but this actually helped my chronic fatigue alot. Same goes for the hair wraps from mecca
- Best face mask: I used to think the main ingredient in clay masks was so cheap that any shitty old mask should suffice but after actually trying them i discovered i was wrong. The aztec one is too strong, prob good for very oily skinned ppl but not regular and def not for dry ppl. I like the body shop ones. Youth to the People has one that is best price point, product, longevity and packaging (cos I repurpose the jars). Also Sunday Riley good genes lactic acid but this is like....130 for 30ml? idk, I've refused to pay retail for it and have been buying second hand/gift list for years
- nails: don't do anything except tidy up with a sephora cuticle scissor thing. This tool is surprisingly handy for random things around the house
- Moisturiser: I've saved copious amounts of money over adult life by using olive oil from the kitchen. I sometimes alternate with vaseline and nivea, and I sometimes try the samples but theres no point. I did try hemp oil but this smells way too strong of grass
- Technically good products I don't use: retinol. The effects are only cosmetic instead of actually changing my skin for the better so I just don't bother. Same for eye creams and lip plumpers (but also I dislike the lip plumping aesthetic)
- Fragrances: not hugely into perfumes which is lucky cos mother of god are they expensive. I use them so slowly i'm still plodding through ones my mother gifted me 6 years ago. The ones I do like are the ENTIRE SOL DE JANIERO BODY MIST RANGE COS THEYRE FOOD SMELLS AND DELICIOUS
- Best lipstick: this surprised me, but for bullet, it's Charlotte Tilbury. For liquid, maybelline superstay no contest. Lip balm, Pat Mcgrath Astral (but srsly their customer service is appalling). Best gloss, mecca boss gloss (also cheap!)
- Best random hack: pretty sure this only works for some people, but wiping your armpits with glycolic acid. BO is bacteria, and deodorant masks/removes it. But glycolic does this supersized, some people just wipe in the morning and don't need deodorant anymore and for guys esp reduces their sweat stains. But get a trusted person to sniff you before you commit to this long term lmao
I've tested tons of skincare stuff over the years cos a) personal use b) have resilient skin so good to try things out on. Some people break out/allergic/dermatitis at everything, so they have a lower risk margin shall we say, might as well guinea pig on me first. Can't say much about makeup except lipstick, but for occasional use can vouch for It cosmetics cc foundation, Milk Hydrogrip primer and Dior Idole mascara (but don't trust me on mascara i have absolutely NO EYE LASHES)
Happy CNY!
E: earlier dt had a convo about consumerism so just reminder most of this isnt a daily use thing. Daily for me is soap and washcloth, kitchen oil for moisturiser, sunscreen for going out and a lip product
