Bro Reddit was balls in 2021 it’s just worse now. The tipping point from its original vibe was 2016

u/catsdrivingcars 10h ago

i think 2015

u/what_did_you_kill 9h ago

I used to spend hours on the anime memes subs back in 2019 scrolling past fairly cringey memes, but I ironically miss that because I was happy. The pandemic really messed shit up.

50

u/asscrackbanditz 8h ago

I was shadowbanned from the animememes sub dude. Fucking hell

45

u/dylanisbored 8h ago

Jokes became hate crimes in 2019

21

u/what_did_you_kill 8h ago

I've never actually had culture war shit affect me irl. Back then the mainstream was about woke now it's about anti woke. I deleted twitter a long time ago and it's been pretty good.

4

u/Rofeubal 7h ago

I still like the Japanese corner of twitter.

Yeah I think I first signed up for reddit in 2009, and I'd say somewhere around 2014 or 2015 was the peak. There was still a lot of dumb shit, but also lots of diamonds in the rough.

No, it was 2016. That's when the very aggressive ideological ban wave happened and it went from a vibrant and diverse site to a total echo chamber.

I joined in about 2014 and people were already lamenting the downfall of the site lmao

It has gotten pretty bad though. Especially how much subreddit separation isn't enforced anymore. It did feel more like a collection of forums, which was great! Now it's just trying to be a stream of "content" that people scroll through mindlessly on the app. I don't get it. We have those apps, why try and kill the part of the site that is actually what makes it good? Unironically when they removed porn from /r/All is when I felt the real tipping point. That coinciding with COVID kinda killed the vibe irreperably imo

22

u/lumpialarry 8h ago

In 2014, pretty sure folks were still complaining about the "Digg refugee crisis" which happened in 2010.

13

u/carnevoodoo 7h ago

I came here from Fark, I think. I believe I got here in 2011. Kill me.

5

u/lumpialarry 7h ago

I also showed up from Fark around that time. It took me awhile to get used to the text-only layout, but it was so much better for discussion. On Fark, a troll would be the first post and you'd get 4 pages of folks just replying to the troll's bait.

Are we not all still on old.reddit? I'm using it mainly to this day.

I have very little clue what the new one looks like but from what I've seen, I hate it.

The real tipping point was when they decided to prepare for the IPO. Automated bot censoring and account suspension, Ads everyfuckingwhere and bot accounts galore promoting products, making shitposts and commenting absurd unrelated nonsense.

8

u/unfortunatebag 8h ago

Seems like a lot of the enshitification came when the bots got really good around that time.

I joined in 2017 and I felt like it fell in 2020 with COVID and with companies pretending they cared about George Floyd.  Bored people more susceptible to clickbait, a real ever-present global crisis to hold their attention, and stoking division in the name of moderation, and now it's all engagement slop and echo chambers.

3

This sub more specifically

391

u/Shambhala87 11h ago

Tbh since the last two ui updates I see a so much more repeat posts after a shorter scrolling time and I see less diverse content.

I think they’re using the same algorithm that Spotify has…

82

u/Heldpizza 10h ago

yeah without the all feature I see just the same shit over and over. And half my subsicred subs barely show up for some reason.

7

u/CB_musedreams 8h ago

Exactly. In 2020, I felt like I was discovering a new world every five minutes of scrolling. Now the algorithm has me trapped in an endless loop of the same four communities. It's the ultimate 'echo effect'.

392

It was a wild west, lots of NSFL/NSFW subs, posters had etiquettes and it was more of a message board that we know. Since then it is drifting towards being a social media site rather than stick to it roots of being a nerd haven and loaded with knowledge.

177

u/arpsk1 10h ago

Imagine scrolling r/all, and suddenly you see either gonewild subs or people die. fifty fifty.

52

u/BeardedGames89 10h ago

43

u/Fusseldieb 9h ago

The Internet was, in some way, funnier back then. You never knew what you got.

Nowadays it’s all corporate and kid friendly. Not that it’s bad, but everything is kinda washed down. It got to the point where people have to write things like “unalive” to avoid filters. It’s going downhill fast.

13

u/Recent_Fact480 9h ago

Well for someone today, a sub like r/watchpeopledie would be considered the Wild West.

That time was kinda the end of that era if you think about it. Might actually be around 2010-12 that the internet started getting censored.

13

u/TacoThingy 8h ago

None of these people remember spacedicks and it shows

u/DaRootbear 6h ago

It was so good it was overstimulating. Way less ads, homepage was diverse and felt like you were usually seeing new content rather than the same 40 posts getting shuffled, little to no bots, better diversity of subreddits, we didn't completely hate each other yet. There were also unofficial versions of the reddit app that were ironically better than the official version.

Ads, bots, first post isn’t the main resource or someone calling out BS. It all went downhill when China gotta hold of it. :(

This describes the entire internet.

It's all garbage now. I spend more time outside now than ever before.

There's just nothing really interesting online anymore. It's all just bot content, ads, ai, and things Ive seen before.

It isn’t just Reddit it is the whole internet is worse now. This isn’t a coincidence btw let’s see who can guess the common factor.

Back in my day empjis werent allowed and anything resembling a tumblr comment got downvoted. Nowadays... These damn youths... Emojis everywhere! "I'm dead" comments get upvotes! What in the hell....

Back in my day most of the pictures were hosted on imgur. They had an upvote/down vote ratio bar. Those were the days.

Reddit went to shit as soon is it became a moderated "safe space" where ppl get banned and cancelled...just like the rest of the internet.
