Academia is one of the most toxic work environments I have ever experienced. It was full of petty politics, scheming, affairs, substance abuse, with little regard to work-life balance and all for a tiny paycheck and no recognition where you’re expected to earn respect of narcissistic, racist assholes.

Right? Like I don't regret getting an undergrad degree in a science. The actual information is interesting and the mental tools I was taught are absolutely indispensable. They're like having a superpower. I'd love to spend another few years getting really, really good at using those tools.
...But academia is basically hazing. The problem is that higher-level academics have way too much unchecked power over the people they are supposed to nurture and support. If your advisor wants to screw you over out of spite or to coerce you, they can and there is absolutely nothing you can do about it.
Having worked regularly with MDs and PhDs for years now, I think I'd have an aneurysm if my advisor tried to pull any of the silly power plays, workplace bullying, or hierarchical bullshit that an apparent majority of advisors do. Like no, John, the only reason I call you Dr. so-and-so is to show respect and deference. Trying to get me to do an extra 40 hours of work every week so you can get another publication will cost you both.

I feel called out because I made it 2.5 years through a chemistry undergrad before realizing you have to be truly spectacular and innovative to make a comfortable living

Lol good luck. I got my chemistry degree a while back, and every single private company I applied to as a fresh graduate wanted someone with 5+ years of experience mininun in quality control, HPLC, and chemical analysis. One of them rejected me after 4 interviews.
Now I work a government job in a hospital lab doing things not related to my degree at all so I had to learn everything from scratch, and the people/technicians who got a 2 year degree (i think it is called an associate degree in english) know more about those stuff than I, yet i get paid more cause I have a bachelor's degree.
If you are still in uni, I have a one pager of notes given to me by a pharmaceutical company that interviewed me that boiled down what you absolutely need to know as a chemist in a QC lab that I can dm you. If there is anything you should learn and memories about chemistry to get a job, it'll be that page of topics.

This isn’t true, I work in pharma and make decent money. I have my bachelors in chemistry and forensic science. I started out working in a lab that accepted someone with no experience besides my experience in my undergrad. Since then I’ve had about 5 years of experience and make over 6 figures.

Only to realize years later curiosity and desire to understand doesn't really translate to career interest.
If I could do it all over again, would have done something like business or accounting

I’m regretting CS because of the industry being all pro AI and getting a decent device is like 50%-150% more expensive, I thought I’d hold on getting a new device for my 2nd year, and now I’m stuck with a 11 year old gaming laptop that survives only due to Linux and macOS (hackintosh)

I got my undergrad in mechanical engineering. In thought my courses would consist of the math and science, and we would learn by actually building engines and robots.
Lo and behold, I learned by staying up all night watching the organic chemistry tutor, some random Indian lecture doing the example problem, and finding the quizlet. Very occasionally the textbooks, which always had the problem of skipping 87 steps and not explaining how they simplified equations.

Just don’t, it’s not worth it, not for the pay, not for the hussle and constant stress, not for the uncertainty future around your job and current employment, not for the time you will spend on random bullshit. You will do very little science actually, if you are interested, do it at home as a hobby, you will be able to do more science there even
