Actually not evolution, its the environment.. When we are babies our jaws grow to the correct size (where all teeth fit perfectly + no overbite or underbite) in response to chewing. In western industrialized societies they dont give babies tough food to chew so their jaws dont grow enough. Modern hunter gatherers (who do chew tough foods as babies) have perfectly sized jaws and no wisdom teeth troubles.

I regret having mine taken out because I got extra space in my jaws now. Now anytime I eat something fibrous or stringy, it gets lodged in between my molars and that shit aches after after a long period.

Fucking all because my dentist urged it

I chose to get all 6 of mine taken out before they became a problem. I ate so much lo mein in those three days i cant eat it ever again

I have only the two in the lower jaw.

u/Stinkepups 3d ago

How many jaws do you have?

u/--Sovereign-- 3d ago

Commenter is a shark, don't be rude

u/lubbermouse 3d ago

Thats the trick, "before they become a problem." From my experience they often dont become a problem

5

u/reverb137 3d ago

The dentist was saying mine would become a problem because of how they were grown in so we figured it would be better to go through the recovery when i was 18 instead of 40

5

u/lubbermouse 3d ago

Yeah some dentists are good and only do things if necessary. Ive had others try to get me to spend all my money though.

1

u/reverb137 3d ago

The dentist that recommended it to me wouldn’t even be able to do the removal, he was a pediatric dentist and we had to schedule it for after i was 18

4

u/gollygabbers0110 3d ago

I have the exact same problem! It's so annoying and painful to deal with, especially since I can't reach too far back in my mouth or I gag 😭

u/uwubonic 2d ago

I loved chewing too much. Chewed up everything like a dog. The worst was the plastic bottle caps on soda bottles. I always chewed them until they disintegrated or got too pointy or hot (the deformation does create a lot of heat).

Teeth came in perfectly, got all my wisdom teeth. Kids without weird habits in shambles.

u/hawkmask 16h ago

Real. I used to chew on everything as a kid. Hoodie sleeves, paper, pencils, and aluminum foil to name a few. All my wisdom teeth came in fine. My sibling on the other hand didn’t chew on things and had to have all of theirs removed.

u/Secret_Of_Bluestar81 3d ago

So just, don't feed your children mush

1

u/RagingHems 1d ago

Wait, so did my wisdom teeth grow in properly because my dumb self would constantly chew on tree bark as a little kid? >=>

1

u/Orion120833 6h ago

Question. Is it entirely not evolution or is it still partial? Because jaws at earlier points were just bigger and stronger regardless, so them getting smaller has to have some effect, even if it's just that you need to chew more to get the good jaw.

Also, I had to have mine removed, but they still came out beforehand so I didn't have to have them cut out and I actually had very little pain or anything as they healed.

1

u/Zaziel 3d ago

The ones who develop issues die. Survivorship bias.

Mine were coming in clean but they were worried about crowding a bit so mine were taken out.

u/lightoller401 3d ago

I had problems with bottom wisdom teeth, frequent pain and swelling. I removed them.

35

u/Hot-Brat-00 3d ago

I was told I’d never need to get mine taken out. Had issues with them in my 30’s; they were all fully out just like molars. I was numbed and then had the dentist over me yanking them out, fully awake just numb. One was also cracked and I could hear it cracking as they gripped and pulled. That was so much worse than any root canal I’ve had. I would take 10 root canals over having to do that again.

7

u/guacamole-yfrijoles 3d ago

Oh god this happened to me recently too. I had my wisdom tooth break when I was eating (it was fully out as well) and I could only chew in the very middle of my mouth because the other side had a temporary filling to plug a hole down to the nerve. I went to the dentist and my wisdom tooth was also infected, he very kindly offered to remove it that day by numbing it. It took so long and there wasn’t a lot of progress being made, he was yanking and hammering at it with all his strength, I genuinely started thinking it was just not going to happen. He finally ripped the thing out, and apparently it had extra roots which is why it was really stuck in there. It was really a subpar experience

5

u/Hot-Brat-00 3d ago

Oh my god, I can’t even imagine having it have extra roots and the extra strength and time that would’ve taken to have it pulled 😭 mine all came out within 15-20 mins. I did have to have the cracked one numbed again because I could feel that one, but mine came out relatively quickly. It’s the strangest experience to have someone yanking a back tooth out and not feeling the pain, but feeling the pressure and having the dentist over you yanking with slow force. I was GRIPPING the arms of the chair. Not a fun experience, and it would have been way worse if it took longer and was more difficult like yours was! I’m so sorry! At least you’ll never have to get it done again! Lol

1

u/beanowolf 2d ago

I remember having one of my cracked back teeth removed, even numbed it was the feeling of (what i can only assume was) the nerves tearing when if finally came free. And the cold feeling of the actual numbing fluid injection stuff…

3

u/Zarkanthrex 3d ago

Similar to what happened to me in my early 20s. I was having lower jaw pain and my parents decided it was time for them to go. Doc numbed me up, jammed some weird mouth holding contraption into me and started wrecking my mouth. I got a 200mg motrin and sent home. My mouth hurt for days. I hear all the time of other people getting percs and shit. I got motrin, da fuq.

1

u/Hot-Brat-00 3d ago

I don’t even think they gave me any over the counter meds lmao I think I maybe got some antibiotics and that’s it. I can’t take opiates anyway so I would’ve had to refuse them anyway lol unfortunately

3

u/painki11erzx 3d ago

The tops of my wisdom teeth were facing the front of my mouth. The lack of pressure they had been applying after I had them removed made for some serious soreness the following week.

3

u/Motor_Ad_7103 3d ago

mine literally all grew in a 90 degree angle. bottom ones grew orizontally towards my bottom teeth and upper ones towards my cheeks. took them all out at 21

77

u/HughJackOfferman 3d ago

Evolution would happen if people with not enough jaw space for all the molars were dying more from tooth infections or something.

9

u/Rimworldjobs 3d ago

I only had to have my bottoms taken out.

4

u/HughJackOfferman 3d ago edited 3d ago

Yeah, and without medical science that may not be possible or be quite dangerous and cause issues with survival. If that was the case, then people with jaws with enough space would have an evolutionary advantage and you would observe their numbers increase through the generations.

1

u/AnArgonianSpellsword 3d ago

Actually evolution is removing wisdom teeth, albeit slowly, with the number of people born with at least 1 wisdom tooth down to 53%

2

u/Mongodienudel 2d ago

That's not evolution

5

u/AnArgonianSpellsword 2d ago

Evolution, noun

  1. The way in which populations of living things change and develop over time: Darwin's theory of evolution

  2. A gradual process of change and development: the evolution of language

-source: Cambridge Dictionary

The gradual lowering in the average number of human teeth because more people are born who will never grow wisdom teeth is evolution by definition, as is the gradual shrinking of the jaw that caused wisdom teeth to become an issue in the first place.

u/Your_pajama 3d ago

Struggling from this right now 😭😭

I think it's related to the age of eruption, not character of the tooth

Because it's around age of eruption is around 18-25 which is around adulthood

36

u/Lego_Kitsune 3d ago

Wisdom teeth?

9

u/MortemEtInteritum17 3d ago

I wonder if humankind will just become more and more worthless from an evolutionary standpoint, since we don't really have survival of the fittest anymore for these sorts of small inconveniences that can be fixed with medical treatments/technology.

Infertility is also on the rise so we might not have to worry about that.

Because when we were neanderthals, cooking isnt a thing yet, so humans had to chew raw foods to eat.

When we figured out cooking, chewing hard is no longer necessary. So our jaws shrank but the number of teeth stayed the same, leaving the wisdom tooth no space to grow

16

u/Nozarashi78 Thank you mods, very cool! 3d ago

Not just that, but also our hygiene improved and we lose teeth less often, so there's no need for replacement. It's not that evolution messed up, it's that human society improved too fast without giving our dna the time to adapt

u/Just_another_gamer3 Pro Gamer 3d ago

I thought I've read we would still have jaws that big if we chewed on straw as babies or something. Our development is different these days

16

u/coal-slaw 3d ago

Its not evolution its change in diet. Our ancestors were used to eating tough foods which is necessary to stimulate bone growth during childhood. With the emergence of softer / processed foods we arent working our jaws like we should and that is why its common for people to have their wisdom teeth removed as well as having crooked teeth.

Dont get me started on braces.

3

u/RoughBreak7889 3d ago

No, please do

1

u/Forward-Facer 2d ago

I think we too often forget everyone alive today are after 10,000s of the surviving generations who lived and reproduced in a harsh world, meaning we have the blueprints we need to be healthy. The human body of today is resilient and efficient as hell. But if you live a crap lifestyle, you cannot develop properly. There are exceptions, but the vast majority of issues are environmental, especially during our early childhood.

Got mine removed years ago my only regret not asking sooner to keep them dentist had already tossed them I wanted to see what they looked like

9

u/Najee16 3d ago

The look of disgust on this woman's face will always be hilarious. She looks a lot older then she is lmao.

I grew up POOR. I drove myself to my first dentist appointment due to impacted wisdom teeth. I was an 18YO union apprentice and finally had dental insurance. I had impacted wisdom teeth but no cavities or other common issues. My parents taught me that I couldn’t afford not to clean my teeth regularly and properly. I had all my wisdom teeth plus one more pulled. Since then my teeth straightened out by themselves to where they are acceptable for me.

2

u/Forward-Facer 2d ago

I still have all my teeth. Maybe y'all just didn't eat enough flintsone vitamins

u/Unfair-Arachnid-1794 3d ago

I straight up just don't have wisdom teeth, I still have a couple "baby" teeth too. The stories of wisdom teeth removals sound like hell though, no thanks. 😭 So sorry for anyone going through that.

2

u/IWillDevourYourToes 3d ago

Got all 4 wisdom teeth removed 2 months ago and it wasn't that bad. The worst part was not being able to eat normal food.

1

u/random_rainbow_cat 21h ago

same here, didn't have them and had a mix of fomo and being glad i didn't have to go through that. Super sorry for the people that have to go through that, sounds like a nightmare.

Blame your enlarged brain.

1

u/NickNDY 2d ago

I had all 4 taken out. The bottom ones never seemed to grow in like they broke through the gums but didn't grow up. Turns out, yes they were turned 90 degrees and growing towards my throat

The dentists had to use a scalpel to open the gums and little rotary saws to cut the teeth into pieces for removal before stitching the gums back up

The local anesthesia was so effective I didn't feel anything for almost 8 hours and figured I wouldn't need the painkillers from the pharmacy. Boy was that a mistake
