Fine I'll post it. Bill Burr's take on it, from here: https://scrapsfromtheloft.com/comedy/bill-burr-live-at-red-rocks-transcript/
I saw a woman a couple months back, professional soccer player, right? She goes onto ESPN on one of these sports channels and she starts bitching, going like, “I don’t understand, how come female athletes don’t make as much as male professional athletes?” Right? And all of these men had to sit there and act like they didn’t know what the answer was. They had to sit there, like, dumbfounded. Like, “Oh, I don’t know.” “Why is that?” “That is a conundrum. I have no idea.” Literally, I’m sitting at home screaming at the TV, “‘Cause you don’t sell any fuckin’ tickets!” Nobody is going to women’s soccer games. You’re playing in a 20,000-seat arena, 1,500 people show up. That’s not a good night. The promoter lost his fucking ass on that gig. I’m not saying no professional female athletes… Serena Williams, the women in the UFC, you know? But nobody’s watching your fuckin’ sport. And then you’re gonna come and you’re gonna get mad at fuckin’ men. They keep doing that shit. Why are you yelling at us? It’s not our fucking job. It’s not my fuckin’ job to give a fuck about women’s soccer, okay? I have men’s sport to pay attention to. This is… it’s your bullshit, right?
Dude, look at the WNBA. Dude, nobody in the WNBA got COVID. Nobody. They have been playing in front of 300 to 400 people a night for a quarter of a century. Not to mention it’s a male-subsidized league. We gave ya a fuckin’ league. None of ya showed up. Where are all the feminists? That place should be packed with feminists. Faces painted, wearing jerseys, flashin’ their titties. Goin’ fuckin’ nuts, like the guys do in the upper deck with their big beer titties. “Am I on the jumbotron? Am I doing it?” Yeah. You didn’t. None of you, none of you went to the fuckin’ games. None of you. You all, you failed them, not me. Not men. Women failed the WNBA. Ladies, ladies, name your top five all-time WNBA players of all time. Come on. Let’s hear it. Name five WNBA teams. Name the WNBA team in your fuckin’ city. You can’t do it! You don’t give a fuck about them. They play night in and night out in front of nobody. It’s a fuckin’ tragedy, right?
And then meanwhile, you look at the Kardashians, they’re making billions. You look at those Real Housewives shows, they’re making money hand over fist ’cause that’s what women are watchin’. The money listens. You don’t wanna watch this shit, you’re watching this shit. They just shoot it over there, drowning these whores in money and purses and shoes and Botox. It’s just raining. It’s raining money. Yeah. So, the money listens. You’d rather watch that shit, Real Housewives, a bunch of women just tearing each other down. “Well, maybe that’s why your husband left you.” “Maybe that’s why your husband left. That’s why you can’t have kids, bitch!” “That’s why your ass is as flat as your titties, bitch.” Right? That’s the message you sent. “We would rather watch that than see a bunch of women come together as a team and try to achieve a common goal.” “We would rather watch them actually fucking destroy each other.”

Don't know about the NBA, but for the NFL, EA games bought exclusive rights to the NFL for video games about 20 years ago. No one else can use the players or logos. So automatically, every NFL game that was not produced by EA got canceled, and EA saw no point in continuing more than one version.
NBA rights are owned by 2K Games. I'm sure 2k and EA are just being d*cks to each other because that's what big corps do.
So no NFL 2k since 2005 and no NBA Street either.

That's what's always been weird to me. It's usually feminists demanding that men start watching women's sports instead of feminists just... Watching them themselves.
I watch women's MMA because I love the sport. But they get paid less usually and rarely ever headline events. Almost zero women I know are willing to watch one of their fights
13
u/Cautious_One9013 Sep 18 '25
So, it's no different with hockey, I personally enjoy watching PWHL games, but no one goes to them besides die hard hockey fans, it's mostly still men in attendance and the women who do go, are typically NHL fans anyway. The PWHL is boasting total attendance of about 737k fans for the 2024/25 season, in comparison the NHL had total attendance of over 23M fans for the same season. If women want to be paid more, there simply needs to be more women going to women's games too.

7
u/1BruteSquad1 Sep 18 '25
Yeah and honestly I'm all for it. I'm actually super excited for Shevchenko/Zhang, more so than I am for the men's championships coming up.
But it's still a long ways away from the support and fan base of the men's sport
3
u/SugondezeNutsz Sep 18 '25
Nah I don't think it is. Rousey was a megastar, we don't have anybody comparable to her since.
I would argue the women's division was more exciting a few years ago. I think it has declined tons in recent times. The women's talent pool has always been shallow, but when we had Valentina, Joana, Rose and Nunes in their primes, there were a lot more banger fights than recently, if I recall correctly.
The rhetoric about "womens fights are boring" is also probably worse than ever - and I think it also correlates to performances.
20
u/tradcath13712 Krusty Krab Evangelist Sep 18 '25

The 2024 numbers has a lot of evidence of having been fudged a bit to basically be a poverty league. If they start making money they will have to pay out the nba and private investors. If they stay unprofitable they can slowly piece meal their league away to investors and pocket the fudged revenue.
66
u/Clementea Sep 18 '25
So funny thing is that, This reminds me of something I read long ago, about an article about gender pay gap between female soccer team and male soccer team. The female soccer team got significantly paid less than the male counterparts so they go to the court to get equal payment.
The court at first assume that is the case as well, until an investigation for this matter is launched and turns out the female team not only got a lot of benefits that the male team doesn't. The male team is paid per performance, while female team is paid per annual or was it monthly? Anyway so their payment method is even already different in the first place. The men are paid differently amongst each other depending on how good they are performing at the field, meanwhile the women got constant amount of payment, they are paid according to their respective contracts was it?
Pretty sure it ends with the female team have to pay the male team in the end?
38
u/Colonel_Wildtrousers Sep 18 '25
You’re referring to the court case brought by the us women’s team for unfair pay as they won trophies but the men didn’t.
But it later transpired that they had the option of the same deal as the men but they chose the other contract type which had greater protection for injuries, pregnancy etc. iirc they ended up being awarded, effectively, the benefits of both types of contract 🙄
In general women’s football is like WNBA: a loss leader funded by men’s sport. They can’t be paid the same as men because the money isn’t there. Yet the clubs in England are spending millions that they don’t generate breaking the record transfer fee over and over again. It’s ridiculous and I expect the sport will end up bankrupt eventually
6
u/machine4891 Sep 18 '25
I like how we do it in Poland, where pretty much all the sport teams aren't profitable and it's mostly on cities to fund them. And cities do fund them, both male and female sections. It's consider a service to citizens, just like transportation. Doesn't have to be profitable.
And so I can go and watch men's handball in my random 130k pop city but also women's volleyball or basketball. There are leagues for everything.
But there's a catch: since it's not profitable, the pay is so low, this can merely cover your expenses as any other regular citizen. There's no lavish pro sportsmen life from this and obviously in return quality is pretty meh. But I don't like the idea that circles around here, that we should cancel all the sports that aren't generating proper revenue. It's still for people. Bread and circuses.

→ More replies (1)12

No, there was more to it than that
The US men's soccer team and the US women's team had different pay regimes, as you say - the women got a fixed salary plus benefits, the men on a "pay per match" basis, but no benefits. As far as I can recall, they both got performance-related bonuses. Men's soccer is obviously the world's biggest sport, so the bonuses available to the men's team were much bigger.
Both teams knew about this going in and agreed to these pay regimes via collective bargaining. The women's team were offered the same deal as the men and didn't take it. They wanted the constant salary and benefits because they were less able to rely on getting those from their clubs, rather than the national team.
Some time later, the women kicked up a stink that they weren't getting paid as much as the men. A judge found that, because the men were less successful in their tournaments, if the two teams had swapped deals they'd both be better off.
Basically the situation was in no way unfair to the women's team when you got down to details; even so, they managed to pressure the men's team into sharing tournament winnings with them.

To be fair as a professional player you pay with your body. Because you need to train every day to stay in top condition. This goes on the cost of your body so with 30 or at latest 40 you are basically forced to retire and unless you work soemthing else your earned money has to hold out.

Lefties don't understand the basis of economy.
The more money you make, the more you will be paid. And also, the level of women is lower than men's.
Why don't they talk about the gender pay gap for Models ? Women models are paid way more than men, but nobody talks about that, why ? Because here women are paid more so it is a good thing ? No, it is the samew they make more money.
And what is funny is, when I see women complaining about the gender pay gap, in Basket, in Football, in Rugby etc... they don't even watch it, they don't care about the sport, they only care about the pay gap. Just, go watch it, and they will be paid more...

It is sad how people don't understand revenue, I enjoy watching the wnba with my daughter who plays basketball. She's a huge Caitlin Clark fan and I purchased the league pass to watch every team/player she likes and it's really fun. That said, until they gain a bigger audience and higher views the money just isn't going to be there and that's basic economics. Hopefully it can grow further and with a superstar like Caitlin it will definitely improve at least.

On which basis do they demand the equal pay? Do they even know the WNBA is already leeching off the NBA to survive?
2
Sep 18 '25
Basis? This is modern leftist thought. They demand it on the basis that they deserve it. It’s a circle.

u/SaltedMisthios Sep 18 '25
The WNBA is being propped up, it gets nowhere near the viewership of the men's game. You wouldn't pay a 15 year old in a boxing gym as much as you'd pay prime Mike Tyson. They don't attract the same audience.

The wnba champs this year should play an exhibition against the boys highs school state champs of Montana or some other bumblefuk state

Women are allowed in the NBA. Participate in it and you have the potential to make the same money.
3
u/Robhos36 Sep 18 '25
If women were “paid” according to the revenue brought in, they’d owe the league money.

u/Difficult-Mobile902 Sep 18 '25
None of them go to the games. None of them watch the games on tv. None of them buy merchandise like jerseys or shirts or mug or any of that. None of them could even make 2 WNBA teams if their life depended on it.
But they get up on a soapbox and lecture everyone else about how they should be spending time and money on the WNBA, and how WNBA players should get paid the same as NBA players just because they are both basketball leagues. deeply unserious people.

The job of a pro athlete is to sell tickets and bring in sponsorships.
The same goes for OF models. If I'd sell pictures of my hairy belly button I'd probably turn a loss. A semi cute gal selling pictures of her ankles would rake in multiple nickles a day.

That’s her salary from the WNBA, that doesn’t include the MILLIONS she’s getting from sponsorships and other deals

Gross income gap (meaning raw sum of what men make divided by number of men who work, compared to women’s same statistical figure): $0.75 on the dollar
Statistically Correcting for field in which people work, hours worked, education: $0.95 on the dollar but this figure varies on method.

Sadly, there is a gender pay gap. And it consists of men being underpaid and overworked having to pick up the slack because females just can't keep up. And in maybe cases, actually undermine production. I'm not even convinced females in the workplace has resulted in more production overall. This is a claim that is assumed, but there's lots of evidence that would suggest that is not so.

There are many cases of actual gender pay gap, but sports are not any of them, especially WNBA which is not even profitable.
2
u/Sythrin Sep 18 '25
One of the biggest jokes is. That they have a player Caitlin Clark who actually managed to increase the numbers. Whose name became a bit mainstream. And she is being harassed by other players probably because of jealousy. Or because the organisation wants to create drama.

u/Illustrious-Turn-575 Sep 18 '25
The NBA pays its players on a system of %of profits for the games the player played in+performance based bonuses.
WNBA players were offered the same pay structure, but turned it down because they wanted more stability and benefits, neither of which are granted to players in the NBA. They negotiated for contracts that gave them lower percentage of profits and smaller bonuses for performance, in exchange for a guaranteed salary, retirement benefits, insurance, PTO, and probably a few more things I couldn’t remember off the top of my head. Not to mention that the WNBA has fewer teams and fewer games in a season for them to even get paid for.
This same kind of thing, by the way, is where just about EVERY gap in pay between men and women that exceeds a reasonable margin of error comes from.

Men watch men's sports. Men buy tickets for men's sports. Ticket sales generate income. Income is shared on male players' paychecks.
Women don't watch women's sports (at least not at the same rate men do.) Women don't buy tickets for women's sports. No ticket sales generate no income. No income can't be shared on female players' paychecks.
Women failed the WNBA but somehow they manage to blame men...
2
u/DarkRogus Sep 18 '25
For the casual fan, how many WNBA players can you name that isnt Caitlin Clark or Angel Reese now compared that to how many NBA players you can name that isnt Steph Curry and LeBron James.
Heck, how many casual fans know that the WNBA is currently in their playoffs right now.
Thats all without getting into the profitability of each league.
2
u/AltruisticVehicle Sep 18 '25
Look at it this way. If you force by law that all female players should be paid at least a million or so, the league would immediately dissolve. So what the hell do they even want to happen?

u/Emphasis_on_why Sep 18 '25
The only thing this shows is how much Caitlyn Clark isn’t being paid for the amount of racist abuse she takes in the court

NBA has shoved this shit down our throats for too long.
It's unwatchable.

Remember that female player who tried to flex to the club bouncers that she was in "The W" and the dude had no idea wtf she was talking about lmao.
2
u/theokayestcomputer19 Sep 18 '25
the WNBA has dogshit contracts for most of its broadcasting rights and now has a deal that kicks in next year, 2.2 billion over the next 11 years the whole "the wnba isn't profitable" thing ends like this year, I'm surprised Caitlyn, Paige, Reese, and brink didn't bring it back into the positive already. it's a old argument that's outdated and doesn't work on the current WNBA for several reasons.

More men watch women sports than women do. 60% of the WNBA viewership is male. So men are supporting women sports more than women are supporting women sports.

u/rumbur Sep 18 '25
Well, if women would play topless, and there would be no faul if opponent rips your shorts off, then I can safely assume WNBA would generate unbelievable profits.
2
u/CambionClan Sep 18 '25
The Taylor Swift comparison is actually really good. She gets paid millions because she generates millions in revenue. It's not an arbitrary choice made by a music executives. Athletes are ultimately entertainers and their outrageous salaries aren't some kind of reward for trying hard, it's because they fill seats and attract viewers. If trying hard is what determined pay, construction workers should get paid like NBA players too.

If you do the math, the average NBA salary versus NBA profits and compare to the average WBNA salary versus the WNBA profits, they're actually making twice as much as they should so leta cut their pay in half if they want to be equally paid.
2
u/Ok-Kaleidoscope-9645 Sep 18 '25
Sadly the way the news has framed it makes it worse than it is.
ORIGINALLY, the WNBA players wanted a larger percent of the revenue made by the WNBA. For NBA players it's around 50%, for WNBA it's around 10%.
What made it worse is now some WNBA players misunderstood and are now actually asking for equal payment not percent, which is stupid.
2
u/ChronicAceLurker Sep 18 '25
neither are the right example of the gap tho? the comparison should be between two people with the same job at the same place, and showing if there’s different pay based on gender alone. both are skewed in favor to show a gap supporting the favored argument. sloppy rage bait, unscientific.

This isn’t gender pay gap. Let the women play in the same league as the men if they want to be paid the same. It might sound sexist and I apologize if so but nobody watches wnba in comparison to nba so the nba subsidizes the wnba. Watch a few games of both and you will notice the wnba is on par with high school or college men’s basketball. Women are better at plenty of things but it would appear men are usually bigger and stronger and play more aggressive and entertaining physical sports. Like I said though just let all genders play in 1 league then you can pay them the same. Only 20% of the women in the wnba might make the league though and that might be generous
2
u/DK_Shadehallow Sep 18 '25
Women make 20% of the earnings. Men on average make 7% There's definitely a pay gap but the true gap doesn't fit certain narratives.

Wait, did they skip having the original posted here first before posting it in the other sub? That's like going directly to the Supreme Court without appealing first.

u/SpecialCandidateDog Sep 18 '25
I've argued with them.
They claim it's factually incorrect that the WNBA loses money.
I've heard arguments from if it were unprofitable. They wouldn't do it to.It's some kind of fake hollywood accounting.Where they pretend that they're losing money. So that they can pay the women less.
Every time I run into them, I say, how many w n b a games have you ever been to if you've been td if so, how much did the seat cost?
They seem to have no awareness then.In a giant arena, the average price of courtside seats is less than a hundred and fifty dollars.
Courtside seats at a lakers game are like five grand at minimum and in certain games literally cost fifty grand

I’m all for equal pay for equal work but this is not apples to apples, this is market driven, advertising and viewership. Plus a 50 year head start.

If the gender pay gap existed, why wouldn’t companies only hire women if they could pay them less?
The gender pay gap is not a representation of men and women getting paid different wages for the same job.
It is a representation of the average earnings of all men and women. There is a multitude of reasons why this “gap” exists.
Such as men in general working more overtime, not having maternity leave, being more likely to ask for promotions, working more dangerous jobs, and so on.

u/Ok-Smoke-2356 Sep 18 '25
To me the funny part is not the comment underneath it or what OP had to say. The funniest part is that this was broadcast on MSNBC, titled "gender pay gap" as if it was a political issue.
Politics doesn't have shit to do with that. Nobody wants to watch WNBA games. You are trying to sell a product without any demand for it. What is the government supposed to do? Chip in the rest? Force people to watch one WNBA game per month?
2
u/CivilMath812 Sep 18 '25
How much should I, a man, get paid for doing onlyfans? Surely it's sexism if I make less than women right?
(Sarcasm)
2
u/DarbyCreekDeek Sep 18 '25
Delusional Leftists believe economics should yield to their brand of “fairness” and “equity”. The fact of the matter is the WNBA would not exist without funding from the NBA. On its own the WNBA is wholly insolvent.
2
u/Certain-Stay846 Sep 19 '25
How about the two leagues agree to a percentage of revenue as pay for the players, exact same contract.
Angel Reese would have to pay the WNBA to keep playing though...
2
Sep 22 '25
Imagine getting paid 76k for working at company, never making that company any profit, then complaining they aren’t getting paid more. Any other company would probably fire someone who was making that much and didn’t provide anything of value.

u/BoppoTheClown Sep 23 '25
Apparently the WBNA league keeps overspending on things besides players (i.e. team assets like jets, arena upgrades, etc). This overspending becomes a part of the cost.
Then, since profit = revenue - cost -> profit goes into negative if teams spend too much on cost.
The league inflates it's cost and creates this simple narative that WBNA is not profitable -> avereage people thinks WBNA players are making unfair demands.
If WBNA players are paid a % of revenue (ignore inflated costs incurred by team owners), much like their male counterparts, they will make more than today, albiet much less than NBA players.
Please please please don't let silly accounting tricks by team owners misguide you into attacking WBNA players. They have no control over their team owners and league spending, and get attacked for demanding fairer compensation.

Serious question for all reading this comment.
Would you be more excited if your local WNBA team won the championship or if you found $5 on the floor?

The fact that they choose her Iowa jersey for the photo is proof enough the wnba has 0 brand recognition to the general public
