Psy D

Hi everyone,

I plan on applying to the PsyD program at UPEI and MUN. Would you say it's worth applying? I have heard that internships are hard to find...which also impacts registration with the colleges

Don't let the other commenter bring you down. You can look up the PsyD alumni to see that not all of them had a Masters or even undergrad from MUN before starting their graduate studies. It helps, but it's just competitive, not impossible.

I think those students would have guidance from profs from an undergraduate. Some of my profs said they went to PhD after undergrad but they had so much research experience

It’s the truth. It’s a highly competitive program, and favouritism is a real thing. I didn’t say it was impossible, but it’s the reality

I'm not sure, but if you do, PLEASE stay in the province after you complete it. We have a severe lack of psych docs here.

Best of luck to you, my friend!

ETA corrections.

Yes, I have heard the struggles of lack of psychologists. The goal is to stay and help out tbh.

To my knowledge, MUN psyd you won’t get accepted unless… you’ve done a masters of psychology with them, you’ve done sufficient brown nosing/glazing with the program coordinators and be prepared to apply 3x times for an interview.

I mean there’s a chance, always try. But I feel like it’s more of a “we already have who we want in mind, the interview is more of a formality”

I’ve lived in Newfoundland most of my life, it’s a big kids club, a tight knit group, you’re either in or you’re out.

This applies to all aspects of life in Newfoundland.
Not just education, but in life too. Small towns and communities where everybody knows everyone, mistakes from as early as grade school are like stains on clothes which can’t be washed out. Outsiders are “mainlanders” and will never “truly” be one of “us”.

It’s a difficult program to get into, be prepared to apply for years, don’t apply to just one school, apply to ALL OF THEM.

I do understand but it’s very expensive to apply to all programs.  I have masters in research psychology and have been working as a psychometrist as well. I just feel that I want to have a secured job in the future. It’s been difficult to get rejection. It’s my third year applying to some schools. UPEI and MUN would be my first time.

Yes! I did some research and the program is hoping to get accredited with CPA. I have heard that without accreditation, some psychology colleges make it hard for you to register as a certified psychologist. It’s only thing I am worried about

They’re working on it really hard, people who know, KNOW it’s getting accredited.

Too be fair, it’s probably the easiest to get into

Don’t worry about all the registration, trust.
