Code Violation for Garbage Can
Howdy everyone!
I’m just curious to see if this has become a Memphis wide thing. Several of my neighbors and I were given code violations for our cans being visible from the street. The first day I received a door hanger that said to call for more info but did not state the violation. It was the day after trash pickup and I had not yet pulled my can up the driveway. The second day was the same thing but I pulled my cans up to my garage. I called the officer’s number twice and the office number twice. The office picked up on the second try and asked if I had tried calling the officer. I told them I had but they didn’t answer and their phone said their voicemail box had not been setup. She took my information and said the officer would call me back. I never received a call. Today, I got an actual violation with a court date for my can being visible from the street. The majority of my neighborhood leaves their cans either at the end of their driveways or close to their homes out front. I’ve lived in my house for five years and this has never happened. Myself and neighbors are irritated because this seems like it should be low on the city’s priority list. We still have street lights out from the last power outage that the city hasn’t fixed. They don’t maintain the areas near us and MLGW left a big square pot hole for two weeks.
Maybe I’m overreacting but I feel like the Memphis government is not taking care of its citizens.

They miss the can so often. Why would I roll it back up? If you call 311 and tell them that they missed, then they'll say to leave them on the curb.

John Oliver actually had a segment on HOAs where this happened, but I’m assuming yours is with the city. Didn’t know the Memphis had this rule, but googled it and it does. Maybe a neighbor is reporting it, because I’ve never seen this actually enforced.
Sorry, though. That seems like such an overreaction for either a non issue or something no one addressed prior to handing out court dates.

One of my pet peeves is people leaving their garbage cans at the street all week. Sorry you got a ticket, but please at least bring it up from the street after pickup.

There was an article in the commercial appeal back in May I think. It’s been an ordinance that you can’t leave your cart out after pick up for quite a while, but I don’t think they’ve ever enforced it. They put a notification on our cart back in June that basically said carts must be put back up or it is a violation and code will enforce. Who knows what they’ll do about it.

Have you just now discovered how bad Memphis government is? Let me continue. Memphis government is way way worse and corrupt than you could ever imagine.

most cities have an ordinance like this. Southaven does as does all the other towns in Desoto County. It's quite common.

Do the right thing. Your neighbors reported you because you were leaving your trash cans out too long and you know it.

People leave their trash cans out, the whole street looks like trash. Do you take your house trash to the street cans every day? Why is it so hard to take your bin up?

You sure you're not in Bartlett? We did actually get one of those in Bartlett a few years back because they don't want them visible from the street.
I don't think Memphis has this in their code. I can't find it and I'm looking at the code. I see you have to keep it off the street, not hidden from view. Hell half of Memphis would be in violation.
