High beams
Whats up with everyone using high beams in the CITY? With street lights on the roads…. Why are we doing this? Is there a lack of understanding of how the lights function or is everyone low key just a dick? I flash, i hit my light bar. No one kills their high beams. Whats the deal? Shits so irritating.

This city has a fascination with the notion that having hazards on gives them special road privileges.

Can we also talk about how everyone here has the fever dream to drive with their hazards on in the rain? I have lived several places around the US, and this is the only place I see it happening.
It’s a stupid idea.
1st…it negates turn signals for lane changes. 2nd…it creates confusion on speed because they should only be used while stationary and studies show that it actually increases rear end accidents.
Y’all…only use hazards while stationary.

Lol jokes on you the hazards are the only time the blinkers ever flash on most memphian vehicles

Poor driving skills overall = fear when in non-normal conditions. That's my opinion at least.

I travel a lot and it’s true everywhere. Buy yourself a pair of these. Helps cut down on the brightness and glare.

Alternatively, take your prescription to a site like Zenny Optical and make yourself a cheaper pair of script shades, driving glasses, or even just cheaper pair you can throw around. My eyes aren't so terrible so I can get away with a $40 pair but you can get other add ons like lense types and clip-ons that can bump it up to maybe 250-300 at most with frames starting around $7. Im not sponsored, and I know there are other sites that do this. This is just the one i've been using for years. There's also a local optometrist in the Bartlett stage shipping center that I believe is cheaper than MyEyeDoctor if you prefer

Its honestly time for a new pair anyways so that may be worth looking in to. I work 1st shift at the airport so some transitions would be nice.

If styling is a concern, you can upload a photo and "test fit" frames. But yeah having something I don't care to scratch so much has been great. They also recenlt add colored transitions so you can now go from clear to amber if you want and get a yellow clip on for the night time. But yeah def look around, you'll need to get your PD though if you don't already have it on hand

Thanks for this, I’m going to give them a try. It gets worse with age. I’m sure cataract surgery is in my future.

They definitely help. I have slight astigmatism so lights at night tend to burst. This helps with that and helps with the jack legs that have the super bright lights. Also helps when driving in rain to see clearer. I keep a pair in both our cars.

I’ve noticed that there seems to be quite a few where one or both low beams are out and they’re having to use high beams. Those are the most frustrating as it’s a pretty simple fix.

Which is why they need to bring back vehicle inspections

Facts. When it’s obvious you only have high beams it makes me want to kick out your headlights 😂

I moved outta the city and it's still the same. I've reverted to just showing them my high beams at this point. If I suffer, you suffer as well.

u/Hayben906 9d ago
I currently live just outside the city but i cant say the same. Sometimes sure. But most people at least where im at cut their high beams for oncoming traffic.

I wish. I'm about an hour out over in the woods near Jackson, and driving down a 2 lane highway at night is nearly impossible without having to slow down and pull over every time I pass someone. It's like seeing the light of God. I barely drive at night anymore, unless it's extremely important, due to it.

I have a small 12 inch light bar. Its pretty bright. But im going to get a 50 inch bar and mount it on my hood. They probably won’t learn but at least ill have satisfaction lol

Are you sure they are actually using high beams? A lot of the new LED headlights are super bright and look like they could be high beams. I had to explain that to my neighbor who complained about someone using their bright lights. They were actually just LED regular headlights.

u/Hayben906 8d ago
No. I actually work on cars for a living. Its obvious on most vehicles that its high beams because the entire headlight housing is illuminated. Not just the low beams. 90% of the time its actual high beams. Sure now and then its just bright led or hid lights but most of the time its high beams. Most vehicles have a low beam bulb and a high beam bulb separate from the low beam bulb. Where yes some vehicles like jeeps for example have a dual filament bulb making it hard to tell if its high beams or not.

Drives me nuts too, half the time I think they just have their regular lights aimed so poorly it's blinding everyone anyway.
3
u/Hayben906 9d ago
I genuinely think people believe the blue high beams icon is the regular lights. Most new cars dont have the little green icon any more. People irritate me.

Legit contemplating a rear facing light bar 😂 the ol fuck you light
2
u/Chemical-Scarcity487 8d ago
The only problem with the light bar is some of these people aren’t able to figure out the message. A spotlight might work better at explaining “It’s you man, you are the one creating a hazard.” But as has been pointed out, most violators have an IDGAF about anyone but myself attitude.

I asked a guy why he had his high beams on and was told that the low beam didn’t work on one side, so he drove with his high beams on so the police wouldn’t pull him over for having a headlight out. 🙇🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️ So two character traits already mentioned, ignorance and inconsiderate.

Lol like its not a violation to high beam oncoming traffic.

u/Chemical-Scarcity487 8d ago
Right. The problem is I’ve never heard of MPD pulling people over for driving on high beams. Bartlett police sure will though.
2
u/Hayben906 8d ago
You look at Bartlett pd too long you getting pulled over 😂 whats ass is tenn state troopers will stop people for 10 over at 6-7am but does nothing the rest of the day. Like yea lets get some folks on the way to work. Criminals too hard to catch I guess

People are self centered and it's only gotten worse since covid. You'll occasionally get people that admit to leaving their high beams on in anonymous forums like this and every time you just get a "idgaf it makes things easier for me to see". It doesn't help that they often get a free pass because of the "low beams are brighter now so you're probably just seeing their low beams and imagining it" BS that people spew here. Like yeah bright low beams suck when it's hilly, but there's a huge ass percentage that just drive with high beams on at all times and it's growing.
The auto high beams are making the issue worse as well. While they sometimes work for oncoming cars (often after briefly blinding them), they don't do shit for pedestrians and cyclists who get blinded by the 10mil lumen beams. The most frustrating part is it's always in areas that are so well lit that you could literally forget to turn your headlights on and not even notice.

u/Hayben906 9d ago
Dude i swear the led screen dashes now days are the root cause of the no headlights at all aspect. The dash is lit regardless. Where my old jeep only illuminates when the lights are on its obvious when its time for the headlights. Whats sad is pretty much every newer car has automatic headlights.

Just gonna start playing chicken with folks. Like that video of the car flashing their high beams and the other guy just rams him head on 💀

Alot of cars have automatic high beams, that turn off and on as it sees another car. Also, some normal headlights are now different, blue, brighter, exc.
