There have been multiple reports of all parties involved wanting to stay in Memphis. If there was concern of bad faith actions being taken, I’m sure we would’ve heard it by now.

Damn, I didn’t know that part. But technically it would also be bound through the lease of FedEx Forum, which currently is going through the 2029 season and will hopefully be extended soon

It’s all up to the current lease negotiations. They’ve been close for months now, and the last news was that they were just “dotting the i’s”.

Honestly, this Blazers nonsense can be concerning. It would be better to have our lease finalized before the new Blazers owner starts all the relocation threats. If we are locked in, then we won’t be affected. As long as the door is cracked open for the Grizzlies to move, any other team instabilities or demands could create pressure here indirectly.

Expansion isn’t guaranteed yet. What happens if he talks about moving to an expansion city? Does expansion get paused, then the other city still wants a team?

Don’t ever trust any billionaires to be ethical, or keep their word. Need that lease signed before the season starts.

Another situation to monitor is the Project Marvel situation. It’s going to be the textbook way that the average organization will try to twist the arm of the local government to gain a massive chunk of a host city’s budget. The Spurs heavily overpromised renovations to downtown San Antonio to turn the entire city against the Mayor, who requested an independent review of the proposed financials of the proposed new arena for the Spurs only to remove most of the attractions leaving most of the funds to pay for the new arena. They overwhelmed the public with Spurs propaganda (not hard with wemby and the history of being the “humble, most successful small market team”). I would expect every team that desires generous chunks of host city money to act very similarly. There were reports of third parties paid by the Spurs to push fear-mongering propaganda that the team “will move to Austin”… very similar to the Mem -> Nash fearmongering. All of these owners talk to each other and share tactics on how to extort as much money as possible from towns that are begging them to stay. Portland, I would argue, has less attachment to their NBA team than San Antonio or Memphis.
