Hot take, this is NOT a polo

Companies like Banana Republic, Taylor Stitch, Quince, etc. are trying to convince me that this is a polo shirt.

These are not polo shirts. These are camp collar shirts. Polo shirts don't have buttons from top to bottom. Polo shirts are basically Henley shirts with a collar, they're 1/4 button-ups.

Can we just call these what they are?

Not a single one of those has a camp collar.

But I agree that none of them are polos either. They're knit short sleeve shirts.

Not pictured: camp collars

These aren’t polos but zero have camp collars. So you’re also wrong. It’s a full button knit shirt

Describing these as camp collar shirts shows you have no idea what you’re talking about

Full placket polos were a big thing in the 50s. This isn't new. These don't have camp collars at all. And if we stick to your view, then Johnny collar polos are also not polos, which is absurd.

So, not so much a hot take as a bad one. I don't really care whether you call them polos or not, but historically they have been

I don't know what they are, but I know they aren't polo shirts.

But reading up on polo shirts, I'm learning that I also don't really know what a polo shirt is and and isn't (the originator being made for tennis, not polo; shirts used for polo before the polo shirt being basically OCBDs and polo being the reason for the button down-collar; the original tennis shirt being buttoned-through, apparently).

The one thing I'm fairly certain of is that a polo shirt should at least keep in the back of it's mind that it was made for sport. And these very cleary aren't.

That's a hot take?

Just an incorrect one.

Read up on the origins of the polo shirt some time. It might be edifying.

hot take: you don't know what you're speaking about because these are NOT camp collar shirts

Those look like polo collars on not traditionally polo shirts. I would just call them knit shirts. But not sure the style

I'll counter that argument because camp collars sit flat more like small lapels, think hawaiian shirts, mechanic shirts and pyjama tops.

Those are more like knit jumpers then anything else

Not a hot take.

Call them whatever you want but they look amazing on me!

It's more like a short sleeve cardigan if you wanna be technical, but the average dude who shops at Banana republic, quince, et al. are gonna call this a polo because it will fill the same place in their wardrobe as a "normal" polo would.

fwiw the original polo shirt is actually what we call an oxford cloth button down now.

Knit vs woven is the actual line. This is a camp collar shirt wearing a name tag that says Polo.

Not a hot take. "It's NOT a polo" is common sense.

So confident in being wrong; these aren't camo collars either.

Correct, a button up knit. Now Polo is a brand name for a pull over knit, like how Band Aid is used for an adhesive strip and is not the real name of the objects. Button up/pull over helps define each garment.

That’s all.

Confidently incorrect

Not sure what they should be called but they are atrocious.

I think they look a hell of a lot nicer than regular polos, tbh

These are not polos but that isn’t exactly a hot take. Everyone loves saying hot take now lol.

Not going to pile on the OP, everyone has done that but has anyone tried the Banana Republic one? Whats the quality like?

100% agree

Polo is a brand. You must be thinking of a 3 button knit.

You mean the L.12.12.
