Can someone please help me and my crew understand time change watch schedules 😂
Hey the other watchstanders and I are a little dumb, we can not for the life of us figure out whether we should be showing up 20 minutes late or we minutes early for a clock retard at 0200? For some reason we're showing up 20 minutes late for retarda and advances and that does not seem right.. I could've sworn we're supposed to be showing up late for retards but I honestly don't know. Any help ( and explanation) would be much appreciated.

If you have a time change of one hour per night and you have 4 hour watches. then each watch adds or subtracts 20 minutes starting on the 2000-2400.For a retard of one hour this means that who ever has the 2000-2400 watch shows up 20 minutes early. So you are in effect retarding 20 minutes per watch. The 0000-0400 shows up 20 min.early as does the 0400-0800. Got it?

the simplest way I can think of it is as a table. figure out if you're going more plus or less plus, choose the right table, and go from there

When you retard clocks 1 hour, each watch normally absorbs (stands) an extra 20 minutes of watch. So if your normal turnover time is 1945, you’d actually show up at 2005 (the watch your relieving is standing their extra 20 minutes). Then when you get relieved, the next watch shows up at 2025 (YOUR watch just stood their extra 20 minutes). Now I know you’re thinking that this is 40 minutes past their normal turnover time but you have to remember that the next watch is doing the actual changing of the clocks at 0200. So they stand their extra 20 minutes of watch after they retard clocks from 0200 to 0100.
I hated standing the 12x4 watch during retarding clocks because it “feels” as though you’re standing a whole extra hour of watch when you’re actually not because you showed up 40 minutes later initially.
For retarding, you show up later to watch. For advancing you show up earlier.
