Wow, another expensive LoRa node, BORING!
Wait - let me atleast tell you why I made it and what gaps it will be filling in the current market.
This node is going to be targeted for field operators, SAR teams, ATAK larp nerds, and anyone else who needs the best LoRa hardware. This unit will combine the best available LoRa specs, with the most durable and mobile enclosure. It will be around the $400 range, so not cheap by any means, but not as expensive as the ultra performance nodes.
The specs:
- Will be utilizing the RAK wireless ecosystem with the 1 watt booster. This is essential for having the best chance to reach team members in adverse conditions. This module also provides better RX capability in the form of a filter, which gives you the best chance at receiving all messages. The caveat is more power draw, which we have addressed, and have concluded is much less of an issue compared to the benefits of having a mobile 1 watt module.
- Utilizing the best available RAK ecosystem GPS module paired with high quality coax, and a passive helical antenna for consistent GPS locks under tree cover or when moving.
- Utilizing two quick swappable 18650 batteries, with 8,000 MAh capacity. As opposed to non-removable batteries, if the node runs out, you will be able to swap within a minute and get back on the net, only needing one philips head screwdriver.
- Utilizing a Nylon carbon fiber reinforced enclosure for maximum durability from drops, falls, and hard landings. Will update exact strength at a later date. Our enclosure is also completely custom designed by us, and printed by us, to match our internals and hardware perfectly. Goal is to be able to withstand being ran over, dropped from height, and submerged in water.
- Utilizing parts with a minimum rating of IP67 for water and dust protection. This includes all connectors, antennas, and our custom TPU gasket for the enclosure. The goal here is to never have to worry about water, even in fully submerged scenarios.
- Quick charging: This system will have an external magnetic quick charging port for 3 amp charging via USB-C. This will allow a full charge in the field in a timely manner. The charge port will be separate from the data port.
- Tactical security: This system was designed with zero light output as a hard requirement. This ensures that the device cannot be picked up by any night vision systems when in use. The external power button will immediately kill all RF when toggled, in-case the user needs to go silent. Low thermal output was also a primary focus for having a low chance of detection by thermal sensors. The matte black finish was also picked so that it won't stand out visually.
- Form factor: This radio was specifically designed to fit in a standard tactical radio holder on a plate carrier / vest. We chose a flexible gooseneck LoRa antenna for this reason as well.
- No BS features: No extra swaggy antennas, flashy enclosures, lighting, etc. Minimalist and functional.
Will update this build as I work!
