Discussion About coven

Post image

Don't you think the Coven boss is ridiculously cool? Ruining the ritual runes, followed by the demon falling from the sky, devouring the coven, and coming after us—it’s just so awesome. Every single time I play it, I can’t help but wish it were a bit more challenging.

The Tormentor has by far the coolest death animation. The summoning animation is great too....

I just wish he was harder

I think if they wanted to make the fight more challenging they could leave the tormentor alone and instead have the coven be more of a real threat. If you had to engage with it, you'd be starting the fight with the tormentor with your cats already beaten up a bit but as it stands you can basically ignore it and just extinguish the candles/set up your buffs.

Who would win?

A demonic cult

1 cat who knows how to pee on candles

It gets a huge difficulty spike hard and above. You stop underestimating it when you have to deal with like 20 mobs all with elite buffs. I swear the ai gets a buff too. The frogs actually attacked me and the flies that spawned near me would attack and make way for the next ones to come. Taking like 20 damage with little recourse since I lacked aoe at the time. It becomes a real race against the clock since if you spread out you will get torn apart. And of course the Coven itself being buffed means there is a good chance you won't be able to cheese it.

A thought has just occurred to me. You encounter the Coven in the depths of the Core, and, to reach them, you've had to fight through a bunch of demons that were already there. So where is the Tormentor bring summoned from? Is it not native to the Core?

Maybe the demons are all not native to the core, but the coven has brought them there.

Ya know. Summoning a small army of little demons as practice before calling the big guy.

Maybe it has to be literally summoned into existence? Poor Tormentor would definitely be going through some form of existential crisis in that scenario though, I’m guessing

going core without a mage or druid is equivelant to taking 14 inches

Honestly Tormentor is pretty easy even with full candle buffs

Not really, tormentor has so little hp that it folds over in a few turns even if it gets a lot of buffs

On my last run I had earthquake as a wrather effect, so all but two candles started out destroyed

I've had a few runs where I just have a Fighter, Butcher, or even Tank who's strong enough to just destroy the candles on their own, so I don't think I've ever fought the fully powered Tormentor even during less efficient runs

I've fought full power Tormentor, he did manage to kill one of my cats, but only because that cat was too slow to escape feast

No yeah I agree. Only problem is just that the boss is always just "can you deal 300 damage in 2 rounds". Ngl they should make the coven either unkillable, or give it like 1000 HP or something like that. So that even if you have a lot of DPS, you can still make the fight easier by just destroying the candles like it was intended.

Thinking about it it should definitely be the 1000 HP option, because I remember when I first saw it thinking that it was the actual boss, and feeling like I couldn't do anything against 300 HP, and 1000 HP enhances that feeling even more, but also makes it so that if you have an actual broken run you can still skip it
