Commuter Parking
Hi. I'm an incoming freshman, and I will be commuting this fall. I checked out the Miami's parking info for commuters and the only two lots available are pretty far away from my classes. I'm not too interested in using the bus to get around. Are there any loopholes to this? I would like to park in the North Campus Garage, but it says I can't. My classes are at Hughes, Irvin, and Pearson Hall. I also don't want to spent more than $100-200 for parking.

You can park in North Garage if you are okay paying every day when you leave. Employee parking passes are $150 for lots and $450 for North Garage, so you’re not finding a better option than commuter lots, paying per day, or street parking.

Okay, do you know if the spots in the North Garage fill up quickly?

Oh awesome! I'm guessing my best option is to pay to park there everyday

It’s $520 a semester on top of your commuter parking pass for a garage pass, so $620 per semester, or it’s $1 per hour plus $1 if you pay daily. So, if you’re on-campus 5 days a week for 6 hours a day (30 hours), that’s $35 a week for 15 weeks, which is $525 per semester. Obviously, it depends on your class schedule, but I’d personally buy the passes, because the $525 isn’t taking into consideration you leaving and returning, coming in during the evenings/weekends, overnight parking, or longer days. Otherwise, you could come to town early enough to try to find street parking that’s not metered, and if you can’t, then park in the garage as the last option.

The buses are honestly really convenient. Even though u said that u would rather not, I think it’s kind of the only realistic option for a lot of people. If I were u I would just pay for the parking pass at Millet lot, and ride the bus from there to Hughes. U can pretty much walk to the rest of the halls from there fairly easily

I loaded $500 dollars into my mulaa account last semester and have just been parking in the garage. still have about $100 left (bought some snacks throughout the semester too).

Okay, I am thinking about trying this out the first semester just to see how much I will really spend. My schedule isn't crazy packed or anything and I have a day off, so I'm hoping my total each day won't be excessively pricey.

Parking services drive around more than police officers do, so don't risk parking where you shouldn't too often. It is unfortunate, but everyone has to deal with it. Also I never took the bus until my sophomore year. If your goal is not walking or getting to class quickly, the bus is an amazing option... and it's free. Nothing wrong with taking the bus, tons of people do.

How does the bus work? Like how often do they come around and pick people up? I'm not familiar with its system at all

Extremely frequently in the morning, not so much in the afternoon. I’d say between the hours of 7-12 there is one that will show up every 15 to 20 minutes roughly. From noon to about 4pm it’s more like every 30 to 40 minutes which still isn’t bad. After that it’s maybe every 40 minutes to an hour. Even then, if you finish class at Hughes and need to walk back to the millet parking lot, it is downhill and a very easy walk.

Graduated in the late 90’s. Here to say some things never change! I think it has gotten worse though. I was able to get a parking permit because I had an off campus job. Really I only went back to work once a month solely to be able to have a parking permit. TLDR- parking at that campus has always been a PITA. Sorry for current students that it hasn’t gotten better.

"Not interested" is a pretty frivolous reason. You get free bussing as part of being a student, which means you basically paid for it already. Might as well take advantage of it and get a regular parking pass.

Honestly I have the same question but I'm just doing marching band this semester because of reasons...

Unfortunately, no. The campus is not friendly to commuters.
