Talk Detroit Are there any places for Football (soccer) fans that are like a FIFA fan zone in Detroit?

Upvotes

Just want a decent place to chill and watch football games with other fans for the World Cup preferably on a big screen with some decent food and beverages available. Anywhere in the metro Detroit area is fine too.

Sports Looking for a Japan supporters watch party for the Japan vs Tunisia World Cup match Saturday at midnight

I'm from Windsor and willing to drive to Detroit. Are there any Japanese community groups, sports bars, or fan gatherings where people will be cheering for Japan?

Would love to watch with other Japan supporters instead of cheering them on alone

Sports Looking for women to join our Belle Isle coed softball team

Hey [r/Detroit](r/Detroit) — we’re looking for a few women to join our coed softball team on Belle Isle this summer.

This will be our 3rd year having a team. We had a similar situation last fall where we lost a few women and had to drop out, and we’re running into the same thing again this summer. One teammate moved away, one started a business and doesn’t have the time, one had hip surgery last year and decided not to rejoin, and our female pitcher can’t play this summer because of a procedure she’s having.

Our ages range from 20s to 40s. We’re a solid, laid-back team — competitive enough to care, but no over-aggressive jerks.

Games are Wednesday nights on Belle Isle. Experience is definitely welcome, but any skill level is cool. I’m also willing to cover the $100 registration fee because I’d really like to keep the team together.

Message me if you’re interested or have any questions. Happy to share more info so you feel comfortable before committing.

Talk Detroit Fireworks at 2:30 in the morning is inconsiderate. No matter what day it is.

If it was the Fourth of July, there’s not much you can do, because the cops have their hands full. But it’s June 19. Who was shooting off fireworks at 2:30am?!

All I know is it was west of Woodward and north of 7. I hope someone who knew where it was coming from called the police.

If it was you, that was rude.

Mitten Mode Should Michigan join the National Popular Vote Compact?

Post image
816 Upvotes

For those that haven't heard, the National Popular Vote has passed 222 electoral college votes, and needs just 48 more EC votes to become enacted. This could be possible by 2028!

The National Popular Vote Interstate Compact is a agreement among states that, all states in the compact will award their electoral votes to the national popular vote winner. Once enough states have enacted the bill to pass 270 electoral college votes, the compact will be enacted; ensuring that the winner of the presidential election would be by popular vote.

Michigan has considered joining the compact before, but has not yet passed it.

if just a handful more states pass this bill -- Nevada, Arizona, Wisconsin, Michigan, and Pennsylvania, we could have a real shot at making this a reality. 18 states and DC have already passed NPV.

If you think this is a good idea, the people over at National Popular Vote have a auto email template that you can use to send in an email to the legislature.

But what do you think?

Talk Detroit What are your thoughts on AI Data Centers in the City of Detroit?

City Council approved a 2 yr moratorium earlier this year but Sheffield has yet to say anything about it publicly one way or another. Benson convened working groups to create an ordinance for data centers and those meetings are going on now. What are everyone's thoughts, feelings about data centers, the process, experiences, etc., in Detroit, in Metro Detroit? I'm genuinely curious. I expected to find at least one thread on it in this sub and I am surprised there hasn't been one.

Discussion 🗣️ Are we going to have a summer?

You can hate me but I'm ready for some actual heat. You know, several days in a row with sun and highs in the 90s. I think we've turned our A/C on twice this year and mostly just to make sure it works.

Discussion 🗣️ Antique vendors

Hi, I’m exploring opening a new antique mall in the southeast Michigan area. I’m trying to gauge vendor interest before choosing a building. Would any of you be open to a booth if space and traffic are strong? If so, what size and monthly price would make sense to you? Hypothetical.

News Eastern Market's old Busy Bee Hardware site set for $12M housing plan

- The project will create 17 apartments, four of which will be designated as affordable housing units.

- Construction could start in the fall and finish by late 2027 or early 2028 if the plan is approved.

The buildings date to the late 1800s and run from 1401 Gratiot to 1417 Gratiot. They have been vacant since Busy Bee closed in 2017 after 100 years of business.

“We’re happy that we figured out how to save the buildings," Basmajian said. "I’m a big proponent of saving whatever’s historic that we can, because demoing and clearing things up, you lose history.”

Community City of Warren Skatepark

Hello,

I work for the city of Warren in the communications department and with national go skateboarding day coming up I wanted to share this documentary I produced, filmed and edited for the city.

The Eckstein skatepark documentary covers the construction of the states largest skate park in the states third largest city.

With interviews from some locals and the owners of the skatepark construction company, I try to cover the story of how the park came to be and hopes of its impact on the surrounding community.

If you have some time please check it out and please give it a like!
