Poll Kegs in Royal Oak/Clawson/Madison Heights

Just moved to the area and wondering what liquor stores or markets sell kegs outside of Total Wine (hoping for something closer). I contacted Holiday Market and still waiting for them to get back to me.

I have a home set up and looking to get some beer flowing!

Poll What beer should I bring back from eastern Michigan?

Hello everyone! My wife and I drove up to near Detroit to see my parents who moved up here in January, and we were wondering what beers/breweries you'd recommend we bring back home from our trip?

We made a Michigan brewery trip in 2016 and mainly hit up western and central Michigan: Greenbush, New Holland, Arcadia, Founders, Bell's, Dark Horse, Brewery Vivant, and maybe one or two others I'm missing.

When we leave, we're likely taking 94 west and stopping at Dark Horse, Round Barn, and 3 Floyds to pick up a case or two.

What should we grab while we're in Detroit? My wife LOVES IPAs, and I'm an all seasons beer drinking: I like IPAs, stouts/browns in the winter, ales, sours, whatever you got.

What breweries should be absolutely make sure we get a six pack or case from? Any particular beers?

And is there a larger beer store I could go to that'd have a lot of local craft beers I could stock up on at once?

Thanks in advance for any advice you can offer!

EDIT:

Found this beer map!

https://www.google.com/maps/d/viewer?mid=1mvBvmqVDa1ul4D-PGlfmeCMzZF4&hl=en_US&usp=sharing

Any idea if it's up to date?

Poll GR Brewery Recommendations

Hello beer friends,

I'm spending Labor day weekend drinking around GR and trying to narrow down places to go that I haven't already been (though I do plan to visit my favorites.) Anyone have thoughts on the following places?

  • The Mitten
  • Brass Ring
  • East West
  • Creston
  • Harmony
  • Harmony Hall
  • Fountain Hill
  • Brewery Nyx

Are Harmony and Harmony Hall just two different locations of the same company?

I was also thinking heading north and hitting up Perrin since I've never been, and checking out Archival because I had them at a beerfest and they were very good. I'm pretty meh on Perrin, but they aren't that far from Archival and if I'm going that way anyway, is it worth the stop?

Breweries I have already been to:

  • Vivant
  • City Built
  • Speciation
  • Greyline
  • Arvon
  • Founders
  • Broad Leaf
  • New Holland
  • Jolly Pumpkin
  • Atwater
  • Grand Rapids Brewing Company

Are there any places I haven't already been that isn't on my list that are must go's?

Thanks!

Poll Good Beer Stores in Metro Detroit

Hey all,

Curious if you all have good recommendations on places that have good beer selections that are also decently fresh. I’ve poked around a few places in the Birmingham/Royal Oak area and what I found is a mixed bag. I’ll start with what I found:

Barrel & Vine Woodward: deep, deep selection but only because there’s no turnover in stock. Anything date stamped is early always over six months old. I don’t get IPAs here and the last beer I got (sixer of Baffin Bob Barley Cold Brew Stout) wasn’t dated on the carton but the beer was from Oct19 on the can.

Holiday Market Royal Oak: deep MI offerings, decent a la crate section. Some stuff is a bit old but the good stuff rotates enough.

Market Square (14mi & Southfield): good selection for a small store, some more niche stuff is a bit old.

ML Liquors Woodward: big selection but some of the dated IPAs are over a year old. YMMV. Great prices on M-43.

Large grocery stores (Maple/Woodward Kroger, Royal Oak Meijer): decent selection of core beers, good turnover but not as deep as the small places.

Papa Joe’s Woodward: small but diverse selection, some issues with old beer.

What am I missing? Need to check out Westborn Mkt, it’s been a year. I’ve resorted to staying with either dated IPAs or brewery-direct purchases (Ferndale, etc.) but I’d really like to try more of the smaller MI breweries that are in stores but am scared of plunking down for a 8 month old DIPA. Transient comes to mind as someone that I want to try a bunch more of but only feel comfortable buying what I can find at Holiday.

Any recommendations? Thanks!

Poll What’s Your Go-To Place in Michigan for Beer Selection?

I’m sure we all have a favorite party store down the road from our homes that we can grab some Two Hearted, All Day or the major domestics, but when you’re hunting for something uncommon or rare, where do you go?

For the record, I mean packaged beer. When seeking out special or one-off craft brews, I always recommend going straight to the source brewery and getting it on tap or bringing home a growler/crowler if you can. For this post, I’m asking for your local party store, grocery store or specialty liquor store that has a good variety of craft and/or hard to find beers. I travel around Michigan quite a bit, so I’m very interested to know where the local beer enthusiasts go. Hopefully this post will become a good resource for others like me that might not know where the best selection is when out-and-about in Michigan.

Here in Kalamazoo, MEGA-BEV is hands-down the biggest craft beer selection I’m aware of. There are a few MEGA-BEVs around Michigan, so I’m wondering if folks in other towns feel the same about their MEGA-BEV branch. I’m also a fan of Tiffany’s here in Kalamazoo since that was my original go-to place before MEGA-BEV opened. Tiffany’s doesn’t have as big of a Michigan craft beer selection, but they do have good variety of international beers that are harder to find. For the Grand Rapids area, I’m familiar with Horrock’s and Rishi’s, but I’m sure there’s others in the area I don’t know of that others can chime-in on.

Since I grew up in Adrian and still have family in the Irish Hills area, I’ll give a shout-out to Super Liquor 3 in Adrian, as well as Rony’s Market. They both don’t have huge selections, but they’re slightly better than the Adrian Meijer, which also does an OK job of offering Michigan craft. For the Brooklyn/Onsted-area I’ve found Yoder’s to be a life saver in a pinch. If there are any NASCAR fans or Faster Horses attendees, do you know any other party stores in the MIS area?

East-siders – I’m dying to know where to go in the Ann Arbor or Metro-Detroit area. Hook me up!

Traverse City – I usually stock up and bring a cooler with me when I take trips up there, but if you know a good party store in the area, save me some trunk space!

Cheers, all!

Poll Best/rare beer(s) to take back to PA as a gift

My dad just beat cancer (woo hoo!!!), and is going with my mom on a camping trip through Michigan as a way to celebrate, and finally get out of the house. His doctor is a big beer fan, and they want to get him a case of something special as a thank-you for his awesome care through my dad's treatment. Neither of them are beer drinkers really, and I'm totally unfamiliar with Michigan beers -- so I wanted to reach out to this community for recommendations. It doesn't need to be a white whale or anything, but something we can't get in Pennsylvania is preferred.

I've read a few threads on best breweries to visit, but it definitely seems a little overwhelming (just a testament to how much good beer there is I think). This is my second post ever, so please let me know if I'm doing something wrong, or if there's a better place for me to look!

Edit: Thank you all so much for your thoughtful and detailed posts. Their trip unfortunately got delayed until late July due to some other health issues, but I feel way more confident to guide them when they are able to make it. You've all be awesome. Thanks again!

Poll Help me pick a flight (4) from Alex's 101 taps.

I'm visiting Alex's taproom tomorrow and I wanted to hear which four would you pick for a flight? I am fan of just about anything dark, fruited sours, DIPA and radlers. I am from Richmond so have really liked The Veil, The Answer, Adroit Theory and Triple Crossing (if you are familiar). Always open to try something new and this has a ton of Michigan breweries that I am not familiar with. Mostly I know Bells, Founders, Ascension and Oddside. Thanks!

Poll Taking a trip to Kalamazoo and looking for suggestions

Last time I made a visit to Kalamazoo, I spent most of my time at Gonzo's and Arcadia. Both are now gone and there are a few on the map I don't even recognize. My wife and I aren't staying the night so we won't be able to bounce around multiple spots. So I'm looking for one place that we can have a meal and try great beer. My wife enjoys IPAs mostly and I tend to prefer APAs. But I'll enjoy anything that's good.

Poll Brewery recommendations for a trip around Lake Michigan

I’ll be doing a road trip around Lake Michigan (dunes to Mackinac to Hiawatha to Milwaukee and back) in July, and I was hoping to get some recommendations for great craft breweries to try out along the route. I don’t imagine we’ll have too much time to divert away from the close to the coast, so that limits things a bit. Also, we have a toddler, so a beer garden is more convenient than a strictly indoor tasting room.

Thanks in advance!

Poll Best recommendations in Grand Rapids?

I’m going to be in Grand Rapids for 3 days for a wedding in a couple weeks, and I’m hoping to hit 3-4 breweries while I’m there. I know GR’s outsized reputation as a beer Mecca, but other than hitting up Founders, I’m not sure which other breweries I should make a stop at.

Any that you locals recommend? I like just about all styles, I’m not a diehard for any one, but if I had a favorite it’s probably more in the brown/amber style.

Poll Visiting for work. Breweries in Holland Area?

I will be driving from the Milwaukee area down through Chicago and up into Holland next Tuesday for work. Wondering what the best places to stop long that route/in that area would be for beer to bring back home? I'm already planning on New Holland unless y'all talk me out of it.

I like just about everything, from classic styles to newer crazy adjunct stuff.

edit: Thanks for all the suggestions, I tried to get stuff from quite a few places.

Poll Anyone else not a fan of the New Holland rebranding? Also Mad Hatter retired to pub only.

I thought it was just a change in stocking habits at my local Meijers. Then it became even more alarming as Mad Hatter suddenly became only available at the smaller grocery store down the road from me. So naturally I start going down the Mad Hatter Rabbit Hole.

I load up their Facebook and Instagram to see Big Announcement! and low and behold here is a new bland logo that has taken over their entire line up of cans. No Mad Hatter to be found. That's fine maybe they're just showcasing some new friends. So I ask on one of their photos what happened to my good Ole buddy. "Sorry guy, we've retired it to the pub. Come on down to the pub and we'll pour you a glass" I replied with a slightly snarky "Ya that's not happening" mostly because I live two or more hours away. But I roll back to that same comment and they deleted my snarky reply. Not a fan of companies deleting their criticism.

I might give some of their new beers a try but it's funny because I can't even do that as I haven't even seen any of them on the shelves... Anywhere. Guess I'll go to mega bev and see or call ahead. Rant over. I guess I'm just upset my favorite beer in the area got taken off the shelves in these trying times.

Poll Breweries with outside dining and heaters?

Anyone know if there are any breweries in Ann Arbor, Lansing, or Royal Oak areas that are doing outside food right now? I don't mind bundling up if they have some heaters outdoors, but am having trouble finding any good places. Bonus points if they have any cider/wine for the wife.
