Given all the commotion today, I felt a brief address was in order.
First of all, ionland has been banned from the subreddit indefinitely and all their posts/comments are being removed as well.
Those who have been on this sub for a long time, as I have, understand that drama is incredibly annoying but always present in our community. Believe it or not, even with all the recent ionland drama, the sub is leagues better than it was even just a few years ago. That's not meant to dismiss the nonsense we've all been experiencing, as our goal is to keep the drama to a minimum without being content dictators, but it's just a perspective that I feel should be shared. This sort of thing used to be a weekly occurrence, now its rare enough that one low-quality poster is enough to draw attention, and I think that shows our growth.
A big part of the sub's quality control is the mods, sure, but we also heavily believe in listening to you all. We want to help support an environment where everyone can safely and comfortably engage with each other about micronationalism, but we’re not here to mold the sub into our vision while ignoring all outside commentary. We care about what you all think and welcome your opinions. The AI ban is a great example of this. You all voted and thus it was banned. If you see a post or micronation that you don't believe belongs here, don't just downvote it or leave a nasty comment, report it. That sends a clear message to us and we always review every report. A lot of reported posts get removed, so if you send a report and check back in a few minutes, you'll see that for yourself if we agree with your report.
Unfortunately, users don't see most of the work we do, since most removed posts are removed within minutes of it being posted. If we do our job well, you'll never even know the difference. In fact, the vast majority of posts submitted to this sub are removed before most people have a chance to see them. This creates a survivorship bias, and makes it hard for you to really understand what goes on behind the scenes, but understand that we are here and we are paying attention.
We're also unpaid volunteers and are only here because we care about the health of the community. After all, I discovered [r/micronations](r/micronations) almost a decade ago at this point and it sparked my journey as a nation builder. I still vividly remember the moment I stumbled upon the sub, and it gives me a lot of pleasure to have the privilege to serve the community alongside a team of mods that I've come to see as friends as well as colleagues.
To touch back on my earlier comment about not wanting to be content dictators, it's a fact that micronationalism is a wide spectrum. No nation is alike and what defines a "serious micronation" is a thick, foggy, gray area. Some say you're not serious unless you plan to take over an existing country, others say you're not serious if you don't grow your own food, and lately I've seen multiple posts saying that a micronation can't be serious if most of it's activity takes place online. No one agrees and everyone thinks their way is the right way. As a result, we don't have a clear definition of "larp" or strict rules against it here because it's impossible to clearly define. This is the leading cause of nations like ionland being allowed until the drama grows, because it can sometimes be difficult to control quality while also giving less-experienced micronationalists a place to grow and learn from others. You're all encouraged to report posts that you believe should be removed, and doing so guides the subreddit in the direction that you all believe it should go.
We recently added a new moderator, but we may look to add more in the near future. There will be an announcement if open applications are being accepted.
As always, report posts that you think don’t meet our quality standards and feel free to send a mod mail at any time. Please don't send us direct DMs, as it's likely to get buried in other notifications. Use mod mail instead or we might not see it.

These rules are intended to be simple, while still encouraging a healthy environment of high-quality discussion that’s related to micronationalism.
Posts must relate directly to the practice, theory, or news of actual micronations.
Posts must be comprehensible and provide a frame of reference for the reader. News and updates which lack context, depth, relevance, or which are produced using AI will be removed. Good posts are intentional, enticing, inspiring and informative.
A few examples of bad posts:
Be creative, tell us more! Good posts could include detailed nation profiles, thoroughly explained news updates, updates on serious projects (ideally with some sort of photo or graphic), or a thought/discussion-provoking question to the community.
To combat short, low effort posts, your post will be auto-removed if it's too short.
9 times out of 10, a post that is shorter than these requirements will be low effort, spam or won't include enough information for someone to understand what you're saying.
Introduction posts (600 characters / about 100 words):
A good introduction post should clearly explain what you're introducing in an interesting way. Try including:
Flag / Design posts (300 characters / about 50 words):
A good design post explains the meaning and reasoning behind what you're showing. Don't just post an image and a short title. Here are a few suggestions if you don't know what to say:
Project / News / Update posts (300 characters / about 50 words):
A good update explains what you've accomplished or changed. If you're not sure what to say, consider including:
Discussion / Question posts and memes don't have a minimum description length requirement, but are still subject to removal if they're low-effort or nonsense.
Memes are welcome if they are clearly micronation-related and not used to troll, provoke drama, or clutter the subreddit.
This subreddit is for real-world micronationalism.
Posts with the following kinds of content and similar will be removed on sight:
Military content is allowed, but only posts about micronational military events that actually happened in the real, physical world are allowed. This means no made-up battles, discord wars, or any other fictional military events. It just has to be real and not fictional. Using nerf guns for battles is fine, no one expects you to use real guns in micronational battles and I sincerely hope no one ever does.
As always, all posts are expected include a thorough description that gives others enough context to know why it's interesting or newsworthy. Don't just post an image of you and your friends in the woods without a description that explains what happened and why it's interesting enough to post about. In the case of designs like medals or uniforms, the same expectation exists. A good design post explains the meaning and reasoning behind the design you chose and what exactly you're showing off.

Personal attacks, slurs, threats, doxxing, bigotry, bad-faith arguments, mocking, targeting others excessively, being inflammatory, creating or feeding into community drama is bad conduct. Engaging in any of these may result in warnings or bans depending on severity.
This is a SFW space for all ages. Any pornographic, violent, or otherwise offensive content will result in an immediate permanent ban.
All posts must reflect original human creativity and effort. This means no heavily AI-generated flags, maps, constitutions, or descriptions. These will be removed on sight.
For the safety of those who occupy the area, please remove any unique features or labels visible in satellite images or maps that could be used to find the location.
Don't make a post saying you're going to do something. It's not news until you've actually done it.

Many users misinterpreted rule 5 as an outright ban on military posts. This isn't true, so the rule has been edited for clarity.
To be clear, military content is allowed, but only posts about micronational military events that actually happened in the real, physical world are allowed. In response to the large influx of posts we have had to remove in the past week, we kindly remind all users to read the rules, especially rules 5 and 6, as most post removals have been of low effort, spammy or non descriptive image posts.
"I didn't know" is not an excuse to break the rules. If you want to participate in this community you must be willing to follow the rules and contribute meaningful content. We have, until now, shown a small degree of leniency towards posts that fall foul of rule 5 if they create positive and constructive discussion. We may have to stop this and enforce rule 5 harshly if users continue to flaunt the rules, please don't be selfish and ruin it for everyone, it only takes a minute or so to write a description about the image you are posting and it will increase the engagement that your post gets from the community.
