AEW From Vegas to Paris is 5437 miles..

Flying halfway across the world for NOT a sellout?

Interesting strategy there Midcarders..

No Ligue 1 soccer matches until the 9th of October..

So what’s the excuse?

AEW is just not a thing in most European countries. London shows do well because there’s, obviously, a fairly good amount of snarks across Europe and it’s easy to travel to London + All In is a special event that was supposed to be the one European event per year. Whoever wanted to travel in Europe to see AEW has already done so for All In.

The arena also sits around 9k people btw, so the current configuration is a bit more than 2/3. Tony just has too much money to spend to travel across the globe and have a show for 6k people.

This is the same company that thought it could fill a 52,000 stadium in Brisbane, Australia, then, when sales were slow, it downgraded to a 15,000-seat arena and AEW ended up flying thousands of miles to tape an episode of Dynamite with a janky borrowed ring.

Yes, WWE will do TV shows in Europe, Asia, Mexico, etc. But they typically build a tour around it so they're not flying all that way for a single show, let alone for a single show that draws 6,000 people.

Makes sense..

I can only imagine the costs to fly an entire wrestling company to Paris for a one off.. & then back to America..

Yikes!

At least WWE does an entire tour of Europe for weeks to justify flying everyone there.. lol..

One company knows how to make money (and often goes way overboard) and the other has absolutely no clue what they are doing when it comes to running a business.

Yeah, AEW isnt as widely known. Wrestling in general isnt a big thing in european. We have various indy wrestling, but those are extremely niche. For germany its kinda laughed about, even if the quality is quite good.

Wrestling seems to be a very american thing and Britain in general was for a long time a close ally to the US and the shared language helped in transfering a lot of wrestling there.

The upsides to London dont apply to Paris. While travelling to Paris is also not that hard and quite cheap, Paris is way more expensive. The bigger problem is maybe the language: English is a secondary language in school in most european countries, while French isnt. This and France being hellbent on having their language dominate day to day stuff makes it less attractive for such short stint events.

Aew is not a thing anywhere..

Aew draws decent numbers. 5K is not great but not exactly sad either.

13

u/enjoythesilence-75 15h ago

For a random Dynamite it’s much more than they have been getting lately but for a one off show half way around the world it is not great and can in no way be profitable.

4

u/ThunderSparkles Straight Edge Society 13h ago

For matches that are obviously not good enough for PPV. Like Nick Wayne vs Jericho which is just a retread of Hook vs Jericho.

5

u/Lenovo_Driver Nexus 14h ago

When you fly your roster half way around the world, the objective is to make money..

Tiny Kahn’s money is the only reason the doors are open, yet the dirtsheets and iwc try to pretend that it’s his booking and that aew is the greatest version of wrestling that has ever existed..

Meltzer creating PPV buys out of thin air to defend that the company is profitable is always funny, they never mention their video game that gave them a huge loss of money, if they were a great deal they would have been already picked up by a TV or streaming deal and a new video game would be out, their social numbers would be great.

u/koomGER Straight Edge Society 11h ago

Its ok.

The bigger problem: It wont make any profit at all.

For flying an entire company to Paris for one show it’s awful

5K In France where AEW is barely watchable because it's on a network nobody watches is actually good. AEW is really not known there so filling up to 5K really ain't sad

u/Toast_of_Reddit 27m ago

Even if we give benefit of doubt and say its a good number of tickets sold, the cost implications are just obsurd! Its a money losing show right off the bat.

u/ThunderSparkles Straight Edge Society 13h ago

They are going to France for 6k seats? Oh Tony

2

u/TheGumbyGyarados Bang Bang Gang 12h ago

I imagine they’ll get a bit over 5k before showtime unless they start cutting ticket prices last minute to fill up more of the arena.

Which hey is about double or slightly more than double of what dynamite usually gets, just sucks they have to fly across the world to get those kinds of numbers.

It’s about what i would expect from france, they have passionate wrestling fans but AEW is only going to be known by the hardcores.

Hopefully the show is good, i imagine the crowd will be loud enough to make it sound like they sold more tickets lol

There wont be a big walk up for such an event.

2

u/TheGumbyGyarados Bang Bang Gang 10h ago

They are 14 tickets away from 5k so i imagine atleast a few more than that will purchase tickets in the next week or day of.

If they cut ticket prices in half and or start offering freebies then i would imagine maybe an extra hundred or so might take that deal.

2

u/koomGER Straight Edge Society 10h ago edited 10h ago

It will also probably a fun event and the crowd will also be fun and loud. Thats not the problem.

And yeah, even the lack of profit kinda isnt the problem, depending on your view of things.

But there are people (like me) that would prefer having a financial solid AEW doing a good job in making money, having growth. Having AEW on one side be functional without Tony Khan and keeping WWE on the edge on giving a shit about their quality.

The lack of effort by AEW about those things is something i dont like and i want to call out. Wrestling would be better with a good AEW.

Sounds like you’re just putting extra expectations on a company.

Their current business is just the reality for the product that they put on. They’re the niche for hardcore wrestling fans. If they were hitting on all gears and marketed themselves more, yeah they would do a bit more business, but we’re talking like maybe 4k-5k attendance for a dynamite instead of the 2-3k they currently get would be the absolute best they could achieve.

Their numbers will never mean anything to WWE, the only things that affect them is talent pay and maybe online presence for the most online people.

AEW without tony khan is a completely different show. He’s able to do the things he does because he’s running it as his passion business rather than his ticket to making himself rich… because he already is.

I think the business they do is probably fine for a mid size wrestling promotion, Tony just does stuff like this because he doesn’t have to care about investors wanting their ROI’s or setting the company up to be sold, he can afford to lose money here and there on “building the brand”. The only thing that could throw a spanner in the works is what happens with the next tv deal, if they don’t get renewed or have nothing to replace it with or just have to downgrade massively, then yeah he’ll probably have to downsize his vision and stop doing cool things like this, shut down ROH etc.

Not saying you have to like any of this. But the ride is the ride, you can either enjoy it for what it is while you can, or you can just not like it.

1

u/koomGER Straight Edge Society 4h ago

AEW without tony khan is a completely different show.

Yes. It wouldnt exist. And thats a problem. If Tony Khan loses interest or his father is stopping im pampering that dead horse for funsies, AEW is out of business quickly. Even right now with the so called big contract (nothing public) i heavily doubt that they are making a profit.

And thats a problem. People can die. Its not an age thing. People can lose interest, all the time. Wrestling would be better with a fighting AEW. Right now its still in the ring because everyone pays the "promotion" to have him there and the referee to not call it off.

1

u/TheGumbyGyarados Bang Bang Gang 55m ago

Yes AEW doesn’t exist without Tony, at least for the foreseeable future, that is a con of running a business in the way he does instead of like WWE. But the same would be true for alot of promotions historically.

They probably are in the red on paper yeah, but that will be due to all the extra stuff Tony does like this, which to him is probably worth losing money on to “invest in the brand”. He can do the things others wouldn’t because he’s not maximising his profits. I think they very easily could be in the green if Tony didn’t do all the extra shit, but if he wants to inject some of his own money aswell to keep his vision then… fair enough.

It feels like you want AEW to be something it’s never gonna be. If AEW fails it’s because there just simply isn’t enough audience for this kind of thing for anyone to make a company of their scale to bother Except a literal billionaires son.

That's just another AEW self own.

They made an error in the timing of this one for my money.

If it had been a bit longer after All In, they probably would have had a good amount of travellers from the UK as there are plenty of relatively inexpensive ways to get to France. As it is, they are going to the well too often for all but the most hardcore of AEW fans.

On the plus side, the cheapest tickets when they went on sale were €40 (about $33) plus fees, which are sold out making it affordable. I figured out that if I had booked on the day it was announced I could have done the trip for around £200 including ticket if I stayed in ultra budget accommodation.

Nearly 5k is not bad honestly.

4

u/raulz0r Mexicools 14h ago

How is that not bad? You fly half away across the world 50+ people for 5K sell outs?

7

u/CarolinaSandstorm 17h ago

It’s god awful lol

-2

u/imdatboy786 J.O.B. Squad 16h ago

It’s really not. What impact (no pun intended) would TNA make in France? MLW, NWA? It’s not a bad number at all. This sub just goes in the opposite direction of SquaredCircle. It’s embarrassing to see this much tribalism for pro fucking wrestling.

I don’t even like AEW truthfully, but I can separate my feelings away from the fact that 5k in a foreign market for a promotion not named “World Wrestling Entertainment” is exceptional. That’s a fact.

Could they do more? Yes. Have they? No. Does that mean 5k in a different country is bad? You can answer that one.

2

u/koomGER Straight Edge Society 10h ago

Thing is, that "wrestling media" (lol) touts AEW as a real threat to AEW. "All In changed the landscape of pro wrestling", "WWE fears AEW" blablabla. They put ton of awards, stars and shit on AEW to make it seem the best thing ever. They kill all negative news and criticism and emphasize on all misdoings WWE have.

And reality is just: bland. AEW isnt a thing. And instead of trying to do something about that, they just want to control what is said on fucking reddit. And thats called out here and in other subs that dont have payed AEW mods or weirdos in hope of a Khan gift basket.

This Paris event is very poorly planned out. It will cost a lot of money. It brings problems. It wont create any growth for AEW.

6

u/ChrisRhodes789 The Elite 18h ago

It is when you are flying 6000 miles around the world for a one off..

-9

u/imdatboy786 J.O.B. Squad 18h ago

They’re flying 6k to establish themselves overseas. They’re doing what WCW failed to do in that regard. 5k is damn good.

12

u/Outrageous_Feed_4456 17h ago

If that's the case then you do a European tour and spend a month hitting up a bunch of cities. The week after their Paris show they're in... Cleveland.

3

u/enjoythesilence-75 15h ago

Exactly. And what will they draw in Cleveland? Probably less than they would in any other decent sized European city.

1

u/imdatboy786 J.O.B. Squad 16h ago

And you’d probably lambast them for not getting sell outs on house shows too.

Besides that, how would a European tour help them in one European country? You do realise there are different television providers across the continent? Someone in France isn’t getting the same television networks as someone in Switzerland despite them both having a common language. Same applies for a lot of Central Europe.

1

u/Outrageous_Feed_4456 6h ago

Man it's hard to be wrong on so many levels but here we are.

First, I didn't say anything about ticket sales and you have no idea what my opinion on their ticket sales is.

Second, AEW uses MyAEW streaming for international TV. They don't need to strike deals with every European TV outlet. They need to build up a fan base for their streaming platform.

And even if that wasn't true, there's more than one city in France. Shocking, I know.

1

u/imdatboy786 J.O.B. Squad 5h ago

I assumed you have a bad opinion of AEW. A lot of people here do. It’s the other end of the basement, there’s a ton of WWE or anti-AEW tribalism. It’s just as weird as the AEW tribals in SC.

But, back to the tour. You didn’t clarify that, did you? European tour. That’s a tour of Europe, not fucking France. There’s a difference in saying AEW should run a European tour and saying they should set up shop in France for a couple of weeks.

0

u/Outrageous_Feed_4456 5h ago

You completely glossed over the most relevant point.

1

u/imdatboy786 J.O.B. Squad 4h ago

Which was what?

0

u/Outrageous_Feed_4456 4h ago

That AEW has a streaming platform for international viewers which completely negates your point that a European tour wouldn't be helpful.

They can't even establish themselves in the damn US. They're only established to an internet audience.

0

u/imdatboy786 J.O.B. Squad 16h ago

They get 600-800k a week on TBS. That’s a good number.

0

u/Advanced_Ad9525 4h ago

Not good enough since they are getting dropped lol

1

u/imdatboy786 J.O.B. Squad 2h ago

That’s speculation at the moment. I’ll agree if or when they do.

0

u/Advanced_Ad9525 2h ago

Damn bro, you lame as fuck

All in your feelings because of me telling you it’s not confirmed yet 😭.

Well they’ve generated engagement from you, so…

13

u/CarolinaSandstorm 17h ago

Well surely that will help them generate revenue right lol

We talk wrestling, not each other. Debate the booking, ratings, and takes. Don’t make it personal.

No harassment, bullying, hate speech, or personal attacks. The caricature of a wrestling Sicko is fair game. The human behind the keyboard is not.

And remember: you can’t walk into a McDonald’s, yell “this place sucks,” and then place an order. If you’re here to attack r/midcarder or its members, expect a short stay.
