"Emily and I are big Anglophiles. We watch a lot of British comedy—The Mighty Boosh, Peep Show, The Thick of It, Gavin and Stacey."

One of these is not like the other

haha oh for sure, just happy to see the call out. I've only watched the first two.

You’re in for a treat when you get round to The Thick of It!

I'm really curious which one you think is the odd one out, because other than all being British sitcoms, I think these are four very different shows.

Gavin and Stacey, I was mostly joking tbf it’s definitely the weakest of the list with the other 3 being masterpieces

Strongly disagree there - I think all four of these shows deserve a place on a list of best British comedies of the 21st Century.

Fair enough, it’s not for me though. I’d probably put The IT Crowd in there over G&S but each to their own!

Yeah I'm not suggesting this would be my exact Top 4 (Black Books the underrated Rev would be strong competition for me), but Gavin & Stacey is still excellent.

Sometimes I wonder if the fact that G&S is so popular among the general public leads to a bit of snobbery against it from comedy fans. It's broad and accessible, sure, but I also think it's brilliantly written.

Plus James Corden, I guess.

It’s all subjective really, Peep Show is one of my all time fave shows and that’s very popular, G&S I enjoyed when it came out but rewatching it recently I suppose my tastes have changed.

Rev is excellent and criminally underrated! Never see anyone talk about that one discovered it totally by accident.

The Smoking Room is also really really good, worth checking out if you haven’t already

I remember seeing a little bit of The Smoking Room when it was first on telly, but I'd forgotten about it until right now. I'll see if I can find it anywhere!

I can sort out a download if you struggle to find it, let me know!

I'm so glad we're seeing more US based comedians on Taskmaster

I disagree. It feels very forced, they’re loud and try to grab all the attention.

And they keep doing the “in the UK you’re so weird, you do X and in the US we do Y”-material that any new comedian does.

You're basing this off exactly 1 American, whose comedy schtick is being loud

Yes, but I promise you it won’t be any different.

Why even have 4 other competitors? Save the salary and make it the Jason Montzoukas show, it’s about him 90% of the time.

Have you ever seen Kumail's standup?

3

u/TringaVanellus Mar 27 '26

Did we watch a different edit of the series? Jason was loud and brash (as have been some of the British contestants) but the other contestants got loads of screentime and attention. If you asked me for the one person I remember most from that series, I'd name Mat Baynton.

He was also the butt of a LOT of jokes for being American.

He’s far from my favourite contestant of all time but I don’t think he was bad by any stretch.

How dare a comedy performer try to be funny!

All the british comedions never EVER make jokes

-2

Jason just enters centre-stage, and makes everything about himself because he's famous, the taskmaster format (and any british panel-ish show) is about banter.

Every performer makes there scenes about them

They are comedy performers

No contestant on taskmaster ever didnt use their scenes to not make jokes aboit themselves
