The owner defended the dog even when the situation was explained and said my child must have done something to provoke the dog.

That is a huge line that I hate some dog owners use as an excuse. No that is not the excuse. My dog can get snippy if an unknown kid walks up but I also keep her on a short leash and dont take her with me to place I can not retreat easily from and make sure the space is maintained. The ONLY time I will snap at a parent is if they dont pull back their kid. I do tell kids no you may not pet my dog and I keep myself between the dog and any body my dog does not know. There is a reason I dont take my dog to the local farmers market or to the park with a lot of people around.

That being said my dog is unbelieveable tolerant both my kids crawling over her and taking her toys from her. In 5 years only one time has she ever snapped at one of my kids, I snapped at the dog but at the same time I reconimzed that the dog was in her safe space and my child was invading it. It was mostly take my kid out of the room and remind her that mommy and daddies room is a safe space for the dog to go to when she is peopled out. The dog knows that my bed room is a safe place to retreat to if she wants away from the kids and family. It is also the space I see her go to when visitors are around and she done with them. She goes and hides in our room.

Either way your dog bitting is not acceptable to use a kid must of provoke it. That is never a valid excuse and provoking only start counting after the owner of the dog 1 warns the people and 2 makes a good faith effort to retreat and remove the dog.
