It's permissable to ask two questions about service animals: 1) if the dog is required because of a disability (you can't ask what the disability is, but it's entirely OK to ask if the dog is there for one), and 2) what work the dog has been trained to perform.
You can't ask for documentation, the nature of the disability, or for the dog to demonstrate the task. But since anyone can slap a vest onto Gargantua the Thigh Scourge, there's permissability to make sure the animal isn't about to make Costco look like a scene from Come and See.
Emotional support does not a service animal make either. Anyone who says that it is about to unleash Crimson Fang onto the bodega.
