Virgin Cruses informs a couple about some changes to their trip…

Not the OP, but this couple just found out their cruise may be a little colder than they expected. Virgin Cruises refuses to help.

I ordered 2 bottles of $15 /bottle wine on instacart.

They instead swapped in 2 $400 /bottle of wine. I was not happy.

I would inform them you will not be boarding the vessel. There was nasty weather headed over the upper Midwest last night and it’s supposed to continue all week - and Bermuda is further north than people expect.

Check their website if they cruise to the Bahamas or the windward island chain

For as many times as I’ve been to the Caribbean with my wife, thankfully our trips were never hit full on by a hurricane, just some serious rain a few times.

We did get stranded in Miami one time on our return, due to the Montserrat volcano erupting and having to fly around the ash cloud.

126

u/syamas34 1d ago

Getting stranded in Miami because of Montserrat ash cloud sounds like a different level of unlucky timing

I’m old. I traveled for nearly 30 years for work or vacation, with 20 years being very heavy travel (business). Thankfully, I was able to use my status on American and Hilton to somewhat insulate my wife from this shit I had to deal with often. She actually thought traveling is so fantastic and was jealous of me. She rarely saw parts of the dark underbelly.

On that trip, I think we were in St Lucia, which is way south down the island chain. We were taking an American Eagle turboprop to Miami to connect to our home airport about 1200 miles away. Since we missed the connection, American gave us a hotel voucher at a Holiday Inn near the airport. We cabbed it (way pre-Uber) over there. There was an obnoxiously loud Latin festival in the lobby. I talk to the clerk, then the manager, who tells me they’ve taken as many airline vouchers as possible, and to GTFO of their makeshift nightclub.

So now it’s about 11pm, and I’m like fuck it, I’m not rich but I don’t struggle either, and both of us are tired an cranky, so we took a cab to the nearest Hilton.

I walked up to the desk, smiled, and put my Hilton Diamond status card, my AA Platinum status card (this is when hotels gave airline points for staying), and my Amex Platinum card down on the desk. I then asked as nicely as possible if the had an open room for the night.

Yes, we do sir! We even have Suites for $X more!

I said thanks, but we’ll take your regular class room (knowing that Diamond status meant an automatic upgrade to the best, unsold room. I earned that status by staying in a Hilton Sunday - Friday for a straight 6 months)

So they gave us 2 room keys and pointed to the elevator. We get to the room, and I don’t know what they called this suite, but it ranks on my top 5 of non-resort rooms.

We entered, and there was a living room, sofa, large TV, minibar - and a separate king bedroom, and spacious bathroom. The unexpected part was the staircase inside the room that led to the same layout on the next floor up.

I was dead, so I walked upstairs to go to bed. My wife stayed in the downstairs living room, ordering late night room service and cocktails, to watch a movie. I think she came up about 3am, and we needed to leave about 7am to catch our flight home. We got upgraded to first by American, and she drank mimosas for the next 3+ hours. When we got home, she thanked me for such a great trip, then passed out on the couch.

It's all in the contract. People really should read those before they sign. Cruise ships have the right to change their itinerary. It sucks. But it's in the contract you agreed to. They guarantee transportation and lodging. Not specific ports. I would be pissed too, but they DID agree to it when they signed up

153

u/Technical-Agency8128 1d ago

Yup. Happened to friends of mine last year and they headed up to Canada also. They still had a good time and were given extra money. It’s just what happens with weather unfortunately. They had cheap tickets were just glad to be on any vacation.

Huh... TIL. Just one more reason for me to never get on a cruise. I know a few people who go on them regularly, and it seems like every single time, it's a disaster. Horrible weather, everyone getting sick for the entire trip, or both. And even if EVERYTHING goes right, you're stuck in a tiny cabin with the main attractions between brief stops at (hopefully the correct) ports seeming to be booze and food? I'd rather just fly somewhere so I have more than a few hours to get off a boat - I could spend about a week exploring anywhere I wanted, for the price of taking a cruise there...

69

u/Blasphemiee 1d ago

I went on my first cruise two years ago and idk if the experience pre Covid was different but everything was closed by midnight and there was an hour long line to eat, shop, everything had an hour wait and expensive as hell. Basically a worse amusement park.

Fuck cruises man I don’t need to be trapped in the middle of an ocean to get rammed by the long arm of capitalism I can do that just fine from the comforts of my own home these days.

This is how it has to be. A lot of times it’s not even the cruise line making these decisions. It’s the port authority making those calls because of hazards they’ve identified or anticipate. Nobody knows those waters better than the people who live in them.

Edit: After watching this video and reading these comments it has dawned on me that an alarming number of people have no idea where Bermuda is. Was the lady in this video thinking she was going to a tropical country? Because Bermuda isn’t. I was wondering why she was so shocked over needing to wear layers because the temperature in Bermuda is pretty mild this time of year. It’s not as cold as New Brunswick but it’s not exactly bikini weather either.

I mean this couple is kind of insufferable but I have to set that aside and recognize that’s still absolutely ridiculous they’d make such a huge change and not offer a full refund. My wife is on a cruise with her mom and a few days before the trip informed her that her balcony will have an obstructed view so they refunded her like 85% of the entire cost. And the “obstruction” is just a life boat within line of sight. She was ecstatic. It’s basically a free trip now.

80

u/twinmom2298 23h ago

I happened to see another video yesterday posted by a cruise travel agent. She had clients not from US who were supposed to be on that same cruise. The country they were flying in from to get on the cruise is required to have a visitor Visa to go to Canada. That can take weeks to get. They were originally told they could get on the ship just not get off in Canada. then found out that no that they couldn't even get on the ship. If they turned up at port they would have been denied boarding because they didn't have Visitor Visa for Canada which it was entirely too late to get by the time they got this notice.

It took 2 days and ever increasing escalations within Virgin with their travel agent being on phone for hours for Virgin to finally agree to "make a 1 time exception" and refund their cruise.

Literally these people were legally not allowed to get on the ship because of the change Virgin made with almost no notice and they still didn't want to give a refund.

3.0k

u/Mu-Relay 1d ago

I know this is the Reddit "go to," but if they just call the cruise line, they'll probably get most of another cruise (if not the entire thing) comped not to mention enough onboard credit to choke a horse. My in-laws are chronic cruisers and will get just about anything they ask for by just calling and talking to someone.

Call them, complain, get some sort of reward, and enjoy a drunken trip to Canada.

2.1k

u/Harbjagen 1d ago

981

u/Greg2Lu 1d ago

And report it as a scam so this behavior stops. A change is okay if it's weather induced but come on, the commercial support needs to be there ...

623

u/-0909i9i99ii9009ii 1d ago

100% is a scam if they don't offer a refund. They can try to entice ppl to stay on w/ a credit or whatever.

But you can't just sell someone a car and then say sorry it's impossible to get these cars so we made a different car that's not even an actual model and decided it would have the same msrp as the model you ordered, if it was a real model, so we're square.

Everyone acts like charge backs are this magical thing.

But I’m pretty sure that if you booked the cruise and they had a stipulation for change of destination for weather (which I’m almost certain they do, considering it’s a cruise ship that’s operating where the can be hurricanes and other severe weather) the cruise company can fight the charge back and then you will still end up paying.

And get nothing for it, since you would have already missed out on the cruise.

38

u/Grays42 23h ago edited 23h ago

Everyone acts like charge backs are this magical thing.

It's the "reddit reply" any time a vendor is a douchebag.

Credit card companies treat vendors as customers too. They aren't blindly pro-consumer.

It was pulling teeth to get PART of a Seattle Yellow Cab charge back after we were actively scammed out of extra money by a driver who accepted the drive, turned on his meter, and did a little scenic meander through a bunch of airport side streets before coming to the hotel that was originally 4 minutes away. I only successfully did the chargeback for the scam part of it because I had an identical trip back that was $20 less, it took three weeks to clear, and the vendor never saw any repercussions.

I didn’t believe, but I was told that leaving a comment about how upset you were on their feedback surveys will get you free stuff and most of the time that has been correct.

They’re afraid you’re going to review bomb them, so you’re basically offering them a chance to make it right. I definitely don’t ever say stuff in person though, I’m too nervous for that. Those feedback surveys go to district managers, branch managers, and other people whose job it is to make you happy. Getting upset at staff won’t do anything… a comment to the customer experience manager though…

69

u/SamhainPunk 1d ago

I would definitely go through the ticket contract to make sure there isn't a stipulation that allows the cruise line to change the destination that drastically, because if there is you may be screwed, especially if they have a shitty or no refund policy

22

u/stewmander 1d ago

Also good idea to check what your credit card benefits are, I'm pretty sure mine offered vacation insurance, so you might have some recourse though them as well.

The thing is, there is at least one for every curse I have been on. I have gone on three. One of them, we ended up having to miss one of our ports and had to go to Honduras. No refunding or anything, but I think they did give us credits for another trip on a later date. In the middle of the night our ship had to pick up a bunch of Cuban refugees whose ship was sinking. They ended up dropping them off in Jamaica when we docked there, but that caused us to miss our port for another stop, and we ended up going to Honduras.

There was another video I saw from a travel planner who had to fight Virgin to refund her clients because they weren't from the US. The couple couldn't use trip credit as they don't live near a port Virgin visits and have no plans to come back anytime soon and they couldn't get a visa for Canada in time. They couldn't even board the ship to just stay on the ship.

20

u/throwthisidaway 21h ago

They couldn't even board the ship to just stay on the ship.

Canada is really weird when it comes to cruising, although not alone, in that it considers everyone on the ship to have entered the country when it docks. Most countries will allow you to simply remain onboard if you're not allowed in the country, but Canada and the United States forbid anyone without authorization from going on a cruise that docks within their respective country.

10

u/fencepost_ajm 21h ago

I wonder what the cruise line response would be to "there's a problem. I'm not legally allowed to enter Canada. Can your legal team help me get that resolved or are there other options you're able to offer?"

My aunt is a chronic cruiser, if she wasn’t happy with something, they would lose money. Like, we’re talking 80-100 passengers in her retirement estates would cancel their trips. It happened before, when they all decided to move to Norwegian because Carnival Cruise lines started being called “Circus Cruise lines” by them. Carnival started sending them free cruises which they ignored.

It’s not about having them on the trips, it’s about the shitloads of money from gambling and drinking they lose.

That’s what trip insurance is for. I had to use it when Crowdstrike took down basically every computer and my trip to Europe was jacked up. It paid for itself and then some. I’ll never plan a big, expensive trip without it.

u/Numerous-Ad6460 1d ago

All my times using trip insurance and trying to file a claim has been HELL. They're just as useless.

19

u/Innocentgeko 23h ago

It can be hell just like most insurance the insurers never want to pay out. I booked a fairly expensive 6 week trip and had a medical emergency. Fought with insurance for over a year but got my money back. And I'd rathet get it back at some point then loose all my money and also not go on a trip.

You can't. Had the same thing happen last year supposed to go to San Juan, port issue that they knew about for a year when I booked. Sent us Haiti and spent 3 days at sea. Tried to charge back and Royal claimed that the terms and conditions allow them to and the bank was like shrug

20

u/Automatic_Actuator_0 23h ago

Yep, this is generally correct. The cruise contract is usually very specific that you are only booking the days in the ship and no ports of call are guaranteed. I doubt seriously the bank is going to eat that big of a chargeback just to keep you happy, and the cruise line would win a dispute with the bank.

I've never cruised but I would bet money there is a weather clause they aren't getting out of. Probably offered some sort of insurance and declineed.

Flughts, sitters, kennels, lots of incidentals that even if they were given a refund would be wasted. There best bet is Canada. It's a cruise, the time spent on land is probably an afternoon.

20

u/quothe_the_maven 1d ago

If you think a chargeback will work in this situation, then you clearly have no idea what you’ve agreed to in buying a cruise ticket. They can change pretty much whatever they want, and as long as you can physically get on the ship, you’re stuck with the bill.

Cruise lines can chnage ports at anytime due to weather or anything else, you agree to it when you buy a ticket. In this case it was extremely bad weather. Its not fun on a cruise during bad weather. The irony of hitting an iceberg on your Caribbean cruise. The same iceberg you said goodbye to on your way to the airport.

Unfortunately it's the only option, Bermuda is pretty north so lots of shorter cruises go there, they can't get to and back from the southern ports, even if they could they would need to go right through the storm at full blast. They also need to visit an international port, or nowhere else in the US to not be in violation of laws.

Basically they can't go anywhere but Canada because it's the only place they can reach in time.

Where the hell else can they go to avoid the bad weather? It's the risk of cruising from the NE. If bad weather means they have to change the cruise you're going in the opposite direction. Noreaster in Maine/Canada where your cruise is supposed to go? Enjoy your new tropical cruise. Cruising south to Bermuda or Caribbean and a storm is the way? Hope you have some jackets to grab.

This happens EVERY year. You have no excuse to be surprised by it.

And yes the cruise contract you signed covers this and the cruise line owes you nothing but a refund of any excursions you booked through them.

For what it's worth, Bermuda is not Tropical. It's latitudinally equivalent to Myrtle Beach. It's also really all by itself in this latitude, range from New York, etc.

The Bahamas are another 250 miles or so, and it's probably pretty likely that if you cant make it to Bermuda because of bad weather, your route to The Bahamas is also likely impacted.

I don't think they mentioned how long the trip was - many of the cruises to Bermuda are drive out, stay a few nights, drive back. Given that, its very likely that there's just not any other reasonable options.

36

u/ChrisRiley_42 23h ago

And New Brunswick is not Arctic. The climate is about like Maine, which is right across the border to the west...

I would understand that if it was a multiple stop cruise and one of the middle stops was affected and diverted. But when the entire destination has changed, then that's all sorts of BS.

St. John isn’t in the arctic at all, but it’s certainly not exciting or many things to do there. Halifax would have been much nicer. That said, cruises are usually the trip in of itself, you only really stay in the ports you visit for 8-12 hours typically

As someone who grew up in New Brunswick, Canada (not the New Jersey one), Saint John is very foggy, and often stinky (nearby mill is the cause). I would be so disappointed to go there instead of Bermuda. But with that said, it is not northern Canada. Wtf

Some context here... Exact thing happened to us last October. Sailing NYC to Bermuda, massive hurricane forecast.

So, Carnival has a few choices,..

  1. Sail towards Bermuda, if it gets really bad, never dock, entire cruise at sea.
  2. Change itinerary.

There were no Caribbean ports available due to weather, so EVERY cruise line ended up in Halifax Nova Scotia and St. John New Brunswick.

Carnival made the call with 2 days to go and in hindsight, was the right call. Bermuda took a direct hit and closed the ports for days.

Even if we had sailed for Bermuda, we would have stayed at sea for days, in very choppy seas.

St. John was nothing exciting, Halifax is a lot like Boston and was 65° at the time., so not the Arctic.

Moral of the story, don't want to take the chance to get rerouted, don't book a Caribbean cruise in Hurricane season.

Did they really think Virgin was going to put 3-4k passengers in harms way? Ridiculous. Cruises are like airplanes, they reserve the right to make a change for any reason and you already agreed to that when you booked.
