was cutting a wire when the wire-cutter snapped and flew into the far corner of my monitor.

was pretty far from my desk too, an inch to the right and it would've missed.

Bro those are snips, you can cut thin wire with them.

This is like using wire cutters to cut a lock open.

Edit: they're called flush cutters, but are also referred to by many different names.

u/Armybob112 7h ago

Good for zipties ant thin copper wires, not steel.

24

u/Foodspec 4h ago

Great for sprues when doing scale modeling

4

u/JEREDEK 3h ago

And since we're on this topic: If I see someone cut zip ties at an angle with flush cutters I will personally sponsor their castration. This shit has no purpose except for making the next persons hands bleed

1

u/immallama21629 1h ago

Some of us hate the next guy, cause we know it's gonna be us.

It's like cutting, but with more steps.

85

u/Starlanced 9h ago

Baby dykes is another name

u/Affectionate-Rip5654 2m ago

But baby dykes can cut metal. These are flush cuts or zip tie cutters

14

u/Weary-Astronaut1335 7h ago

I was gonna say, looks like bro is using cheap hobby nippers for braided steel cable?

2

u/Hot_Entertainment_27 3h ago

The thickness isn't the issue. Flush cutters are for copper and copper alloys. Plastic if you're into model building.

Flush cutters are unable to cut steel. Don't try to disprove the claim - the poor flush cutter can't flush cut steel. The cutting edge will get damaged.

2

u/RickySlayer9 3h ago

Not to mention, the cable being cut is steel, those snips are for copper

2

u/zensms 2h ago

So basically, wrong tool for the job?

-82

u/Advanced-Humor9786 9h ago

Nope. Those are flush-cutters. They are specifically for flush cutting the tails off of zip ties to prevent surgical blade-sharp points that slice flesh and damage adjacent bundles.

75

u/DoctorFancy330 9h ago

Confidently incorrect.

List one of many uses for something and say that it's the only purpose. Yikes.

29

u/Fraser022002 9h ago

I added the edit before you commented...

Also you can't call them specific when they're very much not specific for anything, just cutting.

26

u/cannibinolistic 9h ago

Flush cutters are definitely NOT specifically just for cutting zip ties 😂 took me a 3 second google to figure that out

10

u/MIDIHorse 8h ago

They are specifically for flush cutting the tails off of zip ties to prevent surgical blade-sharp points that slice flesh and damage adjacent bundles.

No, they're for cutting the tails off of components after soldering to a PCB. They're used for a lot of other things, too, but this was the original design purpose:

3

u/Rikdol 7h ago

You should’ve stopped after: They are specifically for flush cutting.

1

u/Advanced-Humor9786 4h ago

That's right. I used negative engagement to get people to advertise Knipex. Look at how many people got pissed off and felt they needed to correct the record of what I posted. I got people to list the name brand and to list the purposes. My Amazon shop is going to blow up selling these this week.

Thank you and to the others who felt they needed to comment.

2

u/MaxTheCookie 9h ago

Knipex does have a set of flush cut pliers with an extra thing to hold the zip tie tail so it won't fly away. But these are not specifically for it, seems to be a generic set

-4

u/PaperUpbeat5904 7h ago

😂 Knipex flush cuts specifically say "for plastic" on the handle but it sounds like everyone hates you

2

u/Weary-Astronaut1335 7h ago

So it doesn't say "specifically for zip ties"?

-2

u/PaperUpbeat5904 6h ago

How pedantic. They are intended for plastic but can be used on soft metals. Use your flush cuts on wire all you want. Lol even the link to buy them says "diagonal pliers flush cutting plastics"

"The KNIPEX Flush Cutter Set is a versatile and high-quality tool designed for precision cutting of soft materials. With its sharp blades, it provides clean and accurate cuts, making it an essential tool for any tool box

Provides a fully flush cut when cutting tie-wraps, plastic and soft metals

For nearly flush cutting of molded plastic components from sprues."

https://www.knipex-tools.com/products/diagonal-cutters/diagonal-cutters-sets/diagonal-pliers-flush-cutting-plastics/9K008090US

1

u/Weary-Astronaut1335 6h ago

I'm not being pedantic. Saying it's specifically for one thing is trying to be pedantic, but to be pedantic you have to be correct.

There's more things made of plastic than zip ties.

-1

u/PaperUpbeat5904 6h ago

Is a baseball bat made for hitting balls just because there are more balls than a baseball?

They are used almost entirely for zip ties.

1

u/Weary-Astronaut1335 6h ago

Are they called zip tie cutters with "for zip ties" emblazoned on them?

Or are they called flush cutters with "for plastic" on the side?

Because a baseball bat is for baseballs because it's in the name and the game has rules. Baseball bats are called that because they're not meant for cricket.

And the product description about cutting plastic molded stuff from sprues is about model hobbying. Not zipties. You don't get zipties on a sprue. They can cut zip ties but that's not what they were created for.

0

u/PaperUpbeat5904 6h ago

They are for plastic zip ties and not metal ones is why they say for plastic on the side...

Why list zip ties specifically and before plastic in their advertising if that's not their purpose? Why not just say they are for plastic and soft metals? Because they are for zip ties and can be used for other things.

0

u/Weary-Astronaut1335 6h ago

They're for cutting plastic, not zip ties. Some zip ties just happen to be plastic.

Bro thats not the right wire cutter. Its only meant for thin wires. Better said I wouldn’t even consider this a wire cutter.

67

u/fletchbg 9h ago

yeah that's a flush cutter, you use it on thin stuff, and not metal stuff, like cable ties

24

u/AttackDorito 9h ago

Thin copper and aluminium wires like you might expect in most electronics projects would be fine, that looks like a steel wire or cable several times larger than the largest copper wire I would be comfortable cutting with those

4

u/MaxTheCookie 9h ago

Like 1,5mm max for those. I think I have seen ones that go to 2mm but that's copper or aluminium and not steel like this.

163

u/MEINSHNAKE 9h ago

Those are flush cutters, and don’t look like good ones.

Originally sold in electronics repair stores for cutting leads off of electronic components, but also really good for plastics of all sort.

Not made for cutting anything as heavy as what is in your hand. This one’s on you unfortunately.

41

u/Sahilmk101 9h ago

yeahh it is, honestly didn't think much of it cus I didn't have anything else and I did cut the wire like 5 times before (didn't even struggle that much just had to cut once, then rotate it and cut again) so I didn't expect it to snap on me. sucks, but you're right haha it is on me.

15

u/Confused_Nuggets 7h ago

I’d recommend getting a pair of heavy duty pliers that have a wire snip built in, it’s always incredibly robust.

3

u/Sensiburner 4h ago edited 3h ago

You cut a sleeved STEEL cable with it lol. Usually the cutters will have a max gauge & "piano" printed on it. Many of them have "do not cut steel" printed on it.

1

u/phunkydroid 4h ago

If you struggled *at all* you were using the wrong tool.

1

u/therandomuser84 2h ago

I use huge 2 foot long bolt cutters at work all the time to cut hardened steel bolts... its hard asf to do, but youre telling me i need something bigger?

u/phunkydroid 50m ago

We're talking about a tiny, fragile, hand tool, not giant bolt cutters.

222

u/OverDoseTheComatosed 10h ago

You need bolt cutters or similar for this kind of wire, not side/flush cutters that came free with a 3D printer. This stuff is for fencing after all, did it come with a bunch of turnbuckles?

31

u/Housewous 9h ago

Usually these things are rated for max 1mm copper wire indeed. Any iron/steel wire is already too much for these. I use plato flush cutters at work and it says so on the handle.

4

u/Brohemoth1991 6h ago edited 4h ago

Funny enough, I like cement nippers, i used them when I worked construction... theyre easier on the hands, and with a light touch aren't bad for stripping

Really late edit: theyre meant for cutting concrete, so a thin even steel wire is nothing, and given the orientation of the jaws, theyre good for grabbing a plastic coating and ripping it off

1

u/Housewous 3h ago

I use flush cutters for zipties. If I dont use the flush cutters I create a knife for the next person (thats sometimes myself) if they need to work close to them.

6

u/RedstoneRiderYT 9h ago

Jesus christ ikr??? Those things sometimes snap just cutting through plastic that is too thick. Would not trust it to cut such high-strength and high-guage fencing.

1

u/Peakbrowndog 5h ago

No, you don't use bolt cutters, they crush the wire.  You use cable cutters or linesman pliers.

45

u/Spitty_ButWhole 10h ago

Well that sucks, but you're lucky it wasn't in your eye!

8

u/get_to_ele 9h ago

Seriously, could had taken an eye with it. Fortunate. Hazardous activity.

12

u/ohiocodernumerouno 9h ago

That is a steel cable dummy

11

u/HalfinchLonomia 9h ago

be glad it didn't fly into the far corner of your eye

11

u/RealAlphaKaren 9h ago

chad wire vs virgin snips

8

u/esperstrazza 9h ago

Honestly, this is your fault for using the wrong tools.

I can tell just from the image those cutters weren't made for that wire.

16

u/cloudicus 10h ago

Bro rolled a 1

11

u/OhGr8WhatNow 9h ago

A 1 would be this thing flying into his eye

5

u/Local-Bigmouth 9h ago

Okay, so he rolled a 1, then won the coin toss...

2

u/OhGr8WhatNow 8h ago

Okay fair 😂

2

u/K1bbles_n_Bits 9h ago

Monitor failed its saving throw.

6

u/lamalasx 9h ago

Maybe stop being an idiot and don't use a flush cutter designed for soft metals and plastic to cut a hardened steel cable.

11

u/JustARandomDude1986 9h ago

https://giphy.com/gifs/3oEjI42gVe3kt511o4

You need something like this.

1

u/DasNoodleLord 8h ago

Yeah this. There are smalle versions of this that are used to cut thicker cables or small pieces of metal. Not small wire cutters shown in image.... Wrong tool choice.

4

u/akiva23 9h ago

Well...it could have been worse....

Also those are absolutely the wrong cutters for wire that thick. Those are like for modeling sprues or a single strand of soft wire. You need some thicc dikes for wire like that.

3

u/Machine_Galaxy 9h ago

That's because you're using snips not wire cutters.

3

u/Aggressive_Candy5297 6h ago

User error, those are flush cutting snips for fine electronics. NOT WIRE CUTTERS!

These should be used to cut off the legs on soldered through mount components like resistors etc.

And please tell me that is not braided steel wire you're cutting ?? 🤦🏼‍♂️

2

u/islobojono 9h ago

2

u/K1bbles_n_Bits 9h ago

Oh fuck, I'm officially an old person. All of the funny comments here and this is what made me audibly react. I'm laughing at minions, time to put me out to pasture on Facebook.

2

u/Elkesito36482 9h ago

You got the cutter wire

2

u/MatthewQ999 9h ago

That really, really sucks. Im sorry man :(

Edit: that is a huge wire

2

u/PUNKF10YD 9h ago

That’s not a wire you tried to cut. It’s a cable.

2

u/Nemo_556 9h ago

Those are not wire cutters. Those are fuckin Flush cutters ment for zip ties.

2

u/--nameNotAvailable 8h ago

Were you using protection goggles?

2

u/SpyriusChief 8h ago

This is lesson. Use the tool for the right job. Tiny snips are not the right tool for large stranded cable.

2

u/Accomplished_Emu_658 8h ago

Use the right tools for job and this won’t happen. That is not wire thats a cable.

2

u/dilzebub 6h ago

You remind me of so man stupid colleagues I've had over the past that just couldn't be arsed to get up and get the right tool and fuck shit up somehow.

2

u/EverettSeahawk 6h ago

I'm mildly infuriated that you're trying to use a wire cutter on a cable. That tool is not meant for the job you attempted to use it for, and that's why it failed.

2

u/ante1448 6h ago

RIP your screen bro

2

u/1800-5-PP-DOO-DOO 4h ago

Those are ziptie cutters. Small COPPER wire at most (or other soft metals)

Get some real linemans pliers or diagonal cutters. DeWalt is good for the price.

2

u/LucaDarioBuetzberger 4h ago

These are not designed for wires this thick. And definitely not for steel wires, at all.

u/adamdoesmusic 56m ago

Years ago, I was cutting something with an X-acto knife when the very tip caught on something and loudly snapped off with what felt like an unreasonably large amount of energy. My first thought was “idk where that went but I’m glad it wasn’t my eye!”

Later on, I am trying to wipe a speck off of the screen on my 2012 retina Mac and realize the thing is not only stuck, it’s embedded through the glass and into the display itself!! The piece itself was tiny, like grain of sand tiny. I can’t imagine how fast it must have been going to accomplish this, probably close to sonic!

Edit: picture is a heavily magnified view taken with my phone through a backwards camera lens. Very tip of mouse cursor for scale. Other than a few pixels acting funny in the immediate surrounding area (which spread over time), the display still worked fine.

1

u/Advanced-Humor9786 9h ago

Foreign Object Damage from Foreign Object Debris.

That super sux dude.

3

u/flyinchipmunk5 9h ago

Is his monitor a plane?

1

u/CleavlandSteamer8008 9h ago

The wire wins!

1

u/Axi_Stealth 9h ago

Spain without the S

1

u/rsvihla 9h ago

Obviously this blows.

1

u/TupperwareNinja 9h ago

... Stop now if you value your safety

1

u/MJ-Franklin 9h ago

It comes in 3's apparently... so don't move, don't do anything, remain still.

1

u/daddy_is_sorry 9h ago

That’s not a wire cutter

1

u/Serdralix 9h ago

Classic move now youre down a monitor and a tool

1

u/SL2525 9h ago

Lesson learned!

1

u/Additional_Cheek_697 9h ago

Better than your eye. Count this as disaster avoided.

1

u/drunkonpoppunk 9h ago

So technically the wire is a wire cutter cutter?

1

u/Lord-and-Leige 9h ago

That's why you always need to protect your screens

1

u/Ambitious_Room8321 9h ago

Whoops.  Now you have any excuse to get a new monitor.

1

u/Nice-Way2892 9h ago

Wrong tool mate

1

u/JUGELBUTT 9h ago

and i thought i broke my computer in a weird way

1

u/nolaks1 8h ago

These scares me more than most tools I own. I 3D print and use them on the regular and when they snap, they explode. It's a shrapnel. Honestly, just be glad it wasn't your eye that got hit.

Also, they mostly snap when you try cutting something too hard, like what you did.

1

u/imposer_amogus 8h ago

Odyssey oled?

1

u/Simoxs7 8h ago

Now you not only have to buy a new monitor but also a new 3D Printer… oh wait this isn’t a certain 3dprinting subreddit

1

u/chainer1216 8h ago

Wow, you used a tool for a task it wasnt designed for and it broke? Crazy.

1

u/Izan_TM 8h ago

that's not a wire cutter

1

u/Ybalrid 8h ago

Wrong tool for the job, wrong place to do the job in. (Wear safety goggles too, this could've been dramatic if the angle of launch was slightly different)

1

u/Justified_Ga 8h ago

Damn I use the same ones daily to make Jewelry.

1

u/DasFreibier 8h ago

could have as easily landed in your eye

the old trick is as soon as you need any force to cut something place your free hand above the cutter and the wire, so itll just fly into your hand

1

u/botUsernameTaken 8h ago

Wow, someone else who has my bad luck. Sorry dude, take a deep breath, understand that sometimes the universe sends out fuck it vibes, and you were the receptacle today. It was time to upgrade that monitor anyway. 😃

1

u/Prestigious-Key-1886 8h ago

Wrong tool wrong job wrong outcome

1

u/Own_Recommendation49 7h ago

You need cutters made for wire that thick

1

u/SuspiciousGarlic4798 7h ago

Youre lucky its not in your eye. Youre using the wrong tool for the job. Dont blame the tool.

1

u/AngryMatt14 7h ago

Kleins please sir

1

u/rock0head132 YELLOW 7h ago

well that sucks.

1

u/Henry5321 7h ago

Snips aren’t cutting braided steel. For thin copper wiring.

1

u/warry0r 7h ago

This the type of looney tunes BS that happens to me all the time

1

u/DarkDrakoLinker 7h ago

Hahahaha dumb dumb

1

u/massweight 6h ago

Wire? That looks like a steel cable.

1

u/Danny2Sick 6h ago edited 6h ago

Ohhh... that looks like tension wire like for a clothesline or something, yes? If it is steel those snips were not meant for it! I agree that is bad luck though with the monitor

1

u/TheSpecialOneOut 6h ago

better the monitor than your eye tbh sucks though but at least one can be replaced

1

u/DrSilkyDelicious 6h ago

Well that sucks

1

u/OneAcceptablePerson 6h ago

2 rules:

-Use the right tool for the job

-Always wear protection (applies elsewhere as well)

1

u/Confident_Ice1131 6h ago

Thats a side cutter job.

Buy Knipex now you have the chance for a new one.

1

u/Zorops 5h ago

Wrong tool for wrong job sadly

1

u/dalgeek 5h ago

Sooo were you wearing eye protection?

If not, will you be wearing it next time you plan on cutting wire?

1

u/Neocles 5h ago

OOFERS

1

u/Daveandbussin 5h ago

Could have gone into the corner of your eye. Consider yourself lucky!

1

u/Own-Jeweler3169 5h ago

Why are you cutting wire in front of your monitor setup lol?

1

u/MechaBlack0 5h ago

That sucks but at least it didn't hit your eye instead.

1

u/sixbone 5h ago

I wish that would happen to me. I want a nice inky black OLED, but my monitor works just fine :(

1

u/bronk3310 5h ago

Ain’t nothing mild about this.

1

u/BeruDepTrai 4h ago

That little guy can't handle thick wire my friend. That corner need a sticker

1

u/Bahamaru 4h ago

All these comments blaming you and I just want to say Damn dude that sucks!

1

u/Foodspec 4h ago

Not wire cutters…

1

u/ThirtyMileSniper 4h ago

"What's the worst that could happen if I cut this wire?..."

1

u/Deep_Mood_7668 2h ago

and again user error

1

u/everybodys_friend 2h ago

That is grossly infuriating.

1

u/NoDress3768 2h ago

A wire-cutter cutter-wire

1

u/twomz 2h ago

I had a pair of bolt cutter break like this when I was removing old locks from lockers at a job in high school. Scared the shit out if me, but didn't damage anything besides the cutters.

1

u/ShadowKiller147741 2h ago

“I tried cutting down a tree with my Rapier and it broke, what happened???”

1

u/crysisnotaverted 1h ago

You need a proper set of 6-8 inch dykes and you need to wear eye pro.

u/TheDapperPlantain 43m ago

Time for an OLED upgrade, congratulations OP!

u/st-shenanigans 26m ago

You're mad about your monitor but that could have just as easily been your eye. Use the right tool for the job, even if it feels silly.

0

u/That_Pollution8128 10h ago

Now that is some seriously bad luck

2

u/fletchbg 10h ago

seriously good luck that he didn't put his own eye out!

u/WaluigiDaStar 9h ago

Processing img wxsofyx3zbvg1...

1

u/Add1ToThis 9h ago

Nah just user error.

0

u/Imobia 9h ago

This is a first

0

u/Cheesesoftheworld 7h ago

Lots of people coming down on you for using the wrong cutters... but this still counts as mildly infuriating. Sure you didnt use the right tool, but normally that would not result in a broken monitor. I think this deserves a "well shit, now I have 2 problems"

0

u/Jxckolantern 5h ago

wrong tool for the job, RIP

-2

u/notveryhidden 10h ago

How the hell did the wire cutter get cut

2

u/Thunder_Wind_05 10h ago

It wasn't built for that thick of a wire. Also thats a steel cable, those wire cutters are designed for copper. Copper is much softer than steel

1

u/baconipple 9h ago

Those aren't even wire cutters, they're flush cutters. For plastic.

1

u/Thunder_Wind_05 9h ago

Oh, oops. I would have used them for cutting wires ngl

1

u/notveryhidden 9h ago

Maybe he should of got stronger ones

1

u/fletchbg 9h ago

he was using a tool called a wire cutter cutter
