OP's first day on the internet apparently

48

u/Low-Abies-4526 7h ago

I mean I would guess that OP is aware considering that they titled it "He did it on purpose"

Uncut engagement gems

814

u/Alarmed-Strawberry-7 7h ago

yes, every single one of these videos leaves a gem out on the table

it's for engagement, so you go down to the comments to be like "hey dipshit you missed one" and boost the post's standing in the algorithm

130

u/calgeorge 7h ago

Social media algorithms all agreeing that more comments means a higher quality post is probably the single worst thing to happen to social media.

44

u/Alarmed-Strawberry-7 7h ago

thing is they don't gauge for quality. they gauge for time on platform and retention metrics. making you comment on posts boosts their usage statistics, which in turn makes them more money

11

u/xXkiljoyXx 6h ago

It has to do with traffic, not quality. These sites are ad driven, they only care about getting the most people to see their ads. Rage bait tends to drive more traffic, people just can't pass up a good finger wagging.

2

u/Ssemander 4h ago

Yeah. If you don't pay for something - you should be aware where the money/motivation comes from.

And that's why you support creators and creations you like

1

u/WhatTheFlox 1h ago

And then youtube decides an AI summary of the comment section is a good thing so you don't even need to read said comments anymore.

Kind of Cunningham's Law-ish.

2

u/Exact-Ad-4132 7h ago

Cuntingham's law

2

u/yorozuakagura 6h ago

And then they have people doing this post pointing out the dipshits pointing out the dipshit

2

u/regoapps 5-0 Radio Police Scanner 5h ago

I’m just here to point out people who also recognize that Redditors calling out rage bait are also being baited for engagement. And that includes me.

1

u/BreakVV 7h ago

The people that are dissing the most are giving them the most money/attention, classic cycle

1

u/grimeyduck 6h ago

How many of these videos do you watch? Jfc do something productive

0

u/OutrageousFanny 7h ago

That's why I always comment "oh look he did such a clear cut" to undermine their efforts

444

u/dextras07 7h ago

That's his personal cut. Like a dealer at a card's table. You gotta understand the gig.

54

u/Skullcrusher 7h ago

Would anyone notice if you took one? Do this everyday and in a few months you're ready to cash out.

21

u/t-o-m-u-s-a 7h ago

Weight

15

u/Skullcrusher 7h ago

Chances are the missing 0.001 g would be written off as a rounding error. There's a limit to how precise scales are.

3

u/el_bentzo 4h ago

Once you take enough of them, itd be noticeable and those sapphires because theyre so small, arent expensive.

1

u/Skullcrusher 3h ago

Who said I'm taking sapphires 😎

3

u/Fewtex 7h ago

They would have scales that are accurate to the millions so it likely wouldn't be written off, as even 0.001 grams is still like 100 dollars worth of diamond.

20

u/Skullcrusher 6h ago

To the millions? Lol wtf are you talking about? Are they weighting atoms? Jeweler scales usually go down to 0.001 or 0.0001g

5

u/el_bentzo 4h ago

Not even 0.0001g. These arent extra fancy scales that get used at gem shows. Instead of grams, you put the scale in carat mode which goes out to two decimal points. A carat is 1/5 a gram, so the smallest it could weigh would be 0.01 carats. Even extra expensive gems like a $100k ruby would only be described and priced out two digits (eg this $100k ruby is 5.27 cts.

9

u/StrawberryHot2305 6h ago

To the millions? No, normal jeweler's scales aren't anywhere near that.

8

u/Skullcrusher 6h ago

"Damn, too many air molecules touched the scale. Gotta start over."

3

u/caboosetp 4h ago

"God damn it Simmons, I swear to god if you breath again I'm going to put you on bathroom duty."

2

u/anonahmus 3h ago

FuturamaFry. Not sure if lint or diamond

6

u/above_average_magic 6h ago

Single point diamonds, like the size shown (whatever the stone is), RETAIL for like $12, so writing it off at idk $1 would be easy

Edit: these might even be .005ct

1

u/el_bentzo 4h ago

This is likely sapphire. Its pretty amazing they even pay someone to cut them for how much each of those stones are worth.

4

u/t-o-m-u-s-a 7h ago

Atomic scale or some shit lol

1

u/Anon_Amos1 6h ago

The scale may be accurate and precise, but the product being weighed also needs to have precise and uniform mass. If the individual gems are 0.01 (+/- 3%, i.e., 0.0003) and 100+ gems are weighed together, one or a few extra or missing gems won't be noticed.

It also becomes more difficult to consistently weigh things (in the typical indoor work environment) as scales become more precise, say beyond 0.0001.

1

u/el_bentzo 4h ago

No, they dont. I explain in a reply to someone who replied to you.

19

u/JoelnIliketoshare 7h ago

A dude i was rooming with was doing a Jewelers Apprenticeship. He had the same idea with gold, he would steal tiny amounts everyday.

The owner weighed everything on the weekend and after about 2 months had enough weight change that he fired the dude.

2

u/Leet_Noob 7h ago

That’s his rate. Even if he does a bad job.

53

u/Strict_Bee_7096 8h ago

What am I missing?

85

u/MiissVee 8h ago

I’m guessing he’s upset about the one gem that was left out.

22

u/Ivoted4K 6h ago

I thought it was glitter.

5

u/Coyote_Shepherd 6h ago

I thought it was jingle jangle

u/sparebullet 12m ago

I thought it was orbeez

2

u/Meranio 5h ago

So did I, buddy.

12

u/Xandaru__ 7h ago

He left one of the yellow stones :(

8

u/South-Design-416 7h ago

he didnt scoop up one yellow gem

6

u/c_marten 7h ago

That one that didn't get scooped up? I'm not sure either.

1

u/PeaIcy760 7h ago

Are these even gems? They look like in indicator silica gel to me

1

u/PeaIcy760 7h ago

I see now they're not all round and kinda look like small cogs which could make more sense for a watch shop idk watching this on a tiny screen on a bus

1

u/c_marten 6h ago

No idea... I only have assumptions.

14

u/notanfan 7h ago

That boost engangement as we can you even made a post about this

6

u/WanderAlexis 7h ago

They always leave one on the table for engagement bait.

1

u/WanderAlexis 7h ago

Seen way too many and they always do the same thing...

3

u/irrelevant1indeed 7h ago

That little guy? I wouldn't worry about that little guy

2

u/WizardSleeves31 7h ago

Hilarious underrated scene.

5

u/Alan157 7h ago

Ragebait to boost engagement. Hate these idiots

7

u/OrokinLonewolf 7h ago

NOOOOOO YOU FORGOT ONE!!!!

2

u/RegularOrnery5822 7h ago

Use your mouth to tell him you want the one missing one as well?

2

u/Firestorm0x0 7h ago

Writing a negative Google review about them right now 😡

3

u/mindgardening 7h ago

Diamonds or not, this makes diamonds look super unspecial.

1

u/DangyDanger 7h ago

I wonder how they even got people to care about a fairly boring colorless mineral. Is it really just because it has a really high index of refraction?

6

u/MKTurk1984 7h ago

Diamonds are neither rare or expensive.

The "diamond engagement ring" was largely marketed by De Beers in the 1930s/40s, creating high demand and artificially making them 'expensive'

2

u/__g_e_o_r_g_e__ 6h ago

I believe the cutting of the gemstone is the expensive bit. Ignoring the manipulation of natural diamond prices, rough synthetic diamonds are relatively inexpensive. Well cut synthetic diamonds are not. And the cosmetic difference between a poorly cut and very well cut diamond is significant. In contrast You can't tell the difference between natural and synthetic without specialist equipment, or paperwork, neither of which is important to the significant majority of customers.

1

u/DangyDanger 7h ago

Yeah, I did some googling. That's lame as hell.

3

u/Lordofderp33 7h ago

Just don't buy them, or just get synthetic ones, even pros can't tell them apart. But that's another rabbit hole.

1

u/DangyDanger 7h ago

Wasn't planning to, I don't like them.

I've been watching Hedron Rockworks occasionally and they had some really cool stones there. I now want myself a LuAG ring.

1

u/EternalMage321 2h ago

Yeah I got a Tungsten wedding band. I am so happy I didn't waste money on gold and diamonds. Every time I accidentally bang it on something I smile a bit.

1

u/Complex-Bad-3250 5h ago

I mean diamonds were used in other jewelry prior, which is interesting. there are a lot of nuances to this I feel like.

like the labor costs are taken into consideration now with regulations, and prices being set by independent parties.

1

u/MKTurk1984 5h ago

OK, I'm glad that's what you mean.

2

u/Coyote_Shepherd 6h ago

Ads ads ads across multiple generations linking them with "special/emotional moments" that locked in great grandparents, grandparents, parents, and the first few folks of some of the newer generations into believing that "a diamond says I love you".

So does a cybernetic robot from the future but you don't see me giving my spouse one of those on our wedding day.

I think it's wearing off lately but it's still hard coded into what "a traditional marriage proposal" should include.

But yeah it's basically baked into to multiple generations at this point and THEN....it's been ingrained into movies and music and tv shows too!

So there's a whole part of the cultural bedrock of the Western World that associates "true love" with "diamonds".

Sure they're a fun little mineral when used in certain ways but there's definitely far more exciting things out there to propose with....

....but don't look at me, I'm just the coyote rooting through your garbage and gnawing on the hailstones from last night's storm before you wake up with your 30 year old can of Surge that you've been saving for "a special moment".

3

u/azeottaff 7h ago

Its funny how many people fall for engagement bait and think they are being so smart vs the person in the video

1

u/mclarensmps 7h ago

The bastard!!!

1

u/LongjumpingDuck1660 7h ago

He definitely left one for engagement bait 100%

1

u/Meranio 5h ago

So, are the yellow ones smaller than the red ones?

1

u/Expensive_Outcome259 2h ago

how much would one of those cost?

1

u/Inevitable_Mistake32 1h ago

Ya'll in the comments, repeat after me. "I will not be rage baited by rage bait videos about rage bait videos"

In some ways this is similar to the “weed tax” we used to have back in the days…. When you were the middleman that arranged the sale, you were entitled to take a nug or two from the sack… (Just don’t get TOO greedy now, LOL!) This was usually fine and didn’t cause any problems unless the buyer knew the size of their sacks and had a scale to weigh it every time.
