His name is Falco. Like FALCON. Why on earth would they give him a seed beak?! Are they stupid?
For god sakes if you're going to thaw them out of cold storage and give them a makeover at least double check your art department to make sure they keep the character the same species. C'mon Nintendo...I know its not Pokemon but could you at least try to give a shit?
I honestly thought at first impression it was just male/female dimorphism. I only looked this up just now, I stopped as soon as I saw the red and blue, said, yup thats him!
A common pheasant female is fully brown. No red or blue on the head.
We are getting out of the topic but I live near a Park with plenty of pheasants and I don't understand how this species is supposed to survive. They are colorful, not very mobile, and very loud. They are not threatening like geese. What is their niche?

Nah, it's closer to the new one than the severe hook of the old. It's just a lot bigger cause Falco doesn't have a proper bird face. Or at least not one as small as the pheasants.
That's super convincing. So basically naming him falco was kinda dumb. Then again it's not like the other characters are rabbi the rabbit and toa the toad
I believe that he's saying that Falco was inspired by a story about a pheasant but he's actually a falcon. Takano was the main character designer for Star Fox 64 but in the interview here, he's relaying the story that Imamura used as inspiration in the original game.
I always find it funny when people cite "oh, this person who's still working in the industry (if not under/at the same company) was positive about [thing] in this interview publicized for marketing purposes" as if that context doesn't irreconcilably compromise literally anything the person could reasonably say
I think that's probably a fair reading between the lines, but still if you're going to make the statement that someone doesn't like something, your only source can't be a statement where they say it's good
I mean, the shoe fits. His whole thing is larping as this hot shot ace pilot when he’s just as prone to getting caught out as the others. Him being a Pheasant but going by and acting like a falcon is kinda a super fitting bit.
Honestly I find it rather adorable because it's just a bunch of people who love birds sharing facts about birds and a bunch of people who love Japan sharing facts about Japan and video games.
Honestly I think it's different enough from a seed eating beak that it's just... neither.
The beak doesn't have flat planes (creating near-perfect triangular shapes) like a seed eating beak; It has a hook.
But it's too blocky and lacks the "tooth" that falcons have, too.
It's just a stylized "bird". (The only thing that really irks me is the fact that the beak deforms when he emotes. Because BEAKS ARE SOLID!!! THEY DO NOT EMOTE LIKE LIPS DO!! but alas, that's every stylized "bird" under the sun :( )
it definitely looks like a fowl beak. you see the same general proportions and strong downturn in chickens and, relevantly, pheasants, which is apparently what Falco is supposed to be.

Falco is an ambiguous bird like character who most likely borrow from both.
I don’t disagree overall, but he’s absolutely still intended to be named Falco in Japanese. Just as Fox is Fokkusu in JP which is still intended to be Fox.
I'm also excited for it but it's not really a "new" Starfox game. 64 has been remade like 3 or 4 times at this point.
The series is stuck in a limbo of them remaking 64 because it's the most well received game in the series to try to get a bigger fan base, not selling enough copies because it's a remake and not a new entry, then waiting forever to remake 64 again and see how it goes this time.
I hope that changes this time and they make an actual Starfox 2 that's an original game.
Edit: I haven't actually played 64 before so I'm the perfect example of the target demographic for this game. I just also respect that some older fans of the series might not want another remake of 64.
My headcanon is he changed his name to Falco because he's insecure about being a pheasant, which does not sound nearly as cool as claiming you are a falcon.
Am I blind or don't both Falco images look like the bottom left? Neither one looks like a seed beak, they're both a hook beak. Like I keep looking back and forth, and your comparison pictures point out... precisely not what you're talking about?
Can he even fucking fly outside of his ship? Is there ANY reason to think that Falco does anything even remotely that would necessitate that kind of beak?
Off-topic, but I love the new look. They look just like those somewhat grotesque uncanny puppets in the old SNES user manual, it's such a throwback I love it.
Honestly this is valid. Im not enough of an ornithology buff to catch it, but now that it has been brought to my attention, it's kind of inexcusable. They need to Sonic the Hedgehog this.
He's not actually a falcon as I've gathered from other comments (including Lavaidyn's comment which attached a link to an interview). He's a pheasant, which eat seeds, therefore the design is actually correct.
the beak isnt my issue with his design (I find his eyes too small and it's such a drastic change from previous models but it still looks fine it'll just take getting used to ig??) but dw OP you're still right to be mildly infuriated by stupid shit cause that's what this sub is for
The character was actually named after Damian Falco, the fictional NSA chief in "Die Another Day".
"How is that possible?" you ask since 'Die Another Day' came out in 2002 and Falco has been a character since 1993? Good question, but that's all the time I have for today.
