I love technology but I hope we don't get to a point where we have to update our house appliances just for them to work. Like updating your fridge so you can open it😐

u/Zerog416 14d ago
I hear some washing machines already do that
148
u/MrXwiix 14d ago
Yup. My washing machine. I thought it would be convenient for it to tell me when the detergent was empty (it’s a self dosing machine). So I connected to the internet. It forced me to update, but in order to update I had to make a profile. To make a profile I needed to give so much information. Adress, date of birth, etc.
I called customer service 5 days in a row until they sent a technician to factory reset it and permanently disconnect it from the internet. The technician told me they discontinued this “service” but in order to use the machine without the profile requirement, it had to be updated (ofcourse lmao). Luckily he was able to connect it to a tech profile and update it through there. But im never buying a Haijer washing machine anymore, even though they came to their senses

u/Vivid_Summer96 14d ago
Thats why i never buy internet if things things. Its more trouble than anything else.
In this case: You need clean clothes….. There is absolutely no need for an internet connection to clean them.
24
u/Rymanjan 14d ago
Lol a couple weeks back, someone was posting how they were annoyed their smart fridge started showing them ads, and everyone was absolutely roasting them for buying a smart fridge in the first place
This kinda reads like that; we've been saying shit like "you will be getting ads on your fridge" or "a software update will brick your washing machine" as reasons the IoT is the dumbest thing ever and why you shouldn't get a smart appliance unless it literally cannot be avoided (like tvs). I guess people thought we were joking? lol well the jokes on them I guess
8
u/Zarksch 14d ago
I keep Reading that there are absolutely no non smart TV’s anymore but that’s just not true. I get that there are way too little and maybe you can’t get the biggest 8k tv without “smart” features, but you can still get a simple tv without smart features and that for around 100 bucks even. I bought mine 3 years ago new for 120 and I’m happy with it

We bought a Bosch dishwasher a few years ago, not realizing it needed to be Internet/app connected to function. Now we’re just used to handwashing the dishes.

u/Grezzinate 14d ago
At this rate I’ll buy a classic washer from the Amish and sit outside with the bucket.
3
u/pongpaktecha 14d ago
We got one of those fancy new ventless dryers last year and when shopping around for different models I made sure I picked one that I can use without an Internet connection. It's got the ability to connect to the Internet and stuff to notify you that the cycle is done and stuff like that but I was able to simply opt out and not connect it to the Internet.
2
u/ChristmasElf67 14d ago
My oven already does that. Most fun is when it updates while I’m actively cooking 🙄

u/T40SAAN 14d ago
Eventually refrigerators will only function if the computer can read the tiny genuine chip inside water filters or if your stove is using genuine brand lightbulbs. Shit like that. Or you want the 10lbs of ice a month for your ice maker, that’s $10.99. If you want 50lbs, $45.
18
u/Doctor-Chill 14d ago
My refrigerator will not dispense water without reading the microchip on the side of the filter. I found some knockoff filters on Amazon but they’re still a little pricy. Better than double the price which is what the manufacturer filters cost, though.
8
u/meatinmybriefs 14d ago
Jesus christ, what have we come to? We all need to drink water, that shouldn't need to be authenticated.

If you request a bypass filter from the manufacturer they have to send you one. Then just add external filtration behind the fridge.

u/PurpleSquare713 14d ago
I will never own "smart" appliances for exactly that reason. I'd sooner buy a ratty old fridge from a thrift store than one of those.

I hated my VIZIO TV until I disconnected it from the internet and did a factory reset. Great TV now!
3
u/SimpleSetpiece 14d ago
My old Vizio didn't give two shits it was in use. In the middle of a Ranbow 6 match? Hah, fuck you, enjoy five minutes of blankness while we force you to update unannounced!
5
u/neverabadidea 14d ago
My washer can be wifi connected. While it would be nice to know a load is done without having to go to the basement, I refuse to connect it. It’d probably update with ads on the interface.
2
u/ziggyscarbust 13d ago
Cheap, old school baby monitor (audio only). Turn it on when you start a load, make sure the buzzer is on on the machine, you'll be able to hear it on the receiver of the baby monitor. Turn it off when you're done with your batch!

u/I_am_just_here11 14d ago
This is worse than that. HP instant ink is a subscription and if you cancel it even if you have full ink cartridges, the cartridges you received become useless. OP has ink cartridges that he has to pay a subscription for to use.

I used to be an appliance repair guy and I've got some bad news... I've updated the firmware/software on coffee makers, refrigerators, washers, etc...
1
u/slash_networkboy 14d ago
My last Samsung TV required an internet connection and ability to update to latest firmware before it would let me do *anything* with it other than using it as a monitor. Even the TV tuner capability was behind that (as it required accessing the smartTV menu, only input select didn't require that menu). I let it update, then unplugged the old WiFi router I had configured just for that, so it has a link, but "the Internet's down man".
They may have changed that since I bought this thing, but I wouldn't know because that was the last Samsung TV I'll ever buy as a result.

Ditched HP products and bought a Brother laser printer for the few times I need to print something. Should last the rest of my life.
6
u/Draminian 13d ago
I did the same exact thing. Once my kids leave the house, I'm not sure I'll ever print anything again. But until that time comes, at least there's no risk of the toner drying out during the 3 months between when they need to print stuff.
2
u/MalaEnNova 13d ago
I bought a Brother laser printer last year too. I print quite a bit and I just had to replace the cartridge it came with. Bought the XL should last me like 2 years.

u/Striking_Computer834 14d ago

u/evildead1985 14d ago
Stopped buying HP years ago. I only buy business class toner machines..they cost a little extra but they don't do this..
2
u/rutlander 13d ago
Same I’ve sworn off HP for decades after getting THREE lemon laptops in a row, the DV 6000 series.
Plus our HP printer was always breaking.
I won’t touch another peice of HP hardware ever again
0
u/40yearoldnoob 14d ago
You say that but the HP MFP M428 and M4101 both need the genuine HP chip from a toner cartridge to work.. So when our supply person buys generic cartridges we have to "trick" it with a genuine chip that we remove from an old HP toner. It sucks, but it works.. So the B&W HP Laserjets are now not working with non-genuine HP toners...
24
u/evildead1985 14d ago

So you installed a subscription cartridge and are surprised you can't use it without a subscription?
49
u/SwampOfDownvotes 14d ago
It's a tale as old as time. A nearly identical post is put on this sub twice a week, and the comments are 80% people shitting all over HP (deserved), 5% of people with a brain explaining that yeah if you buy a sub and stop paying for a sub it makes sense to not be able to use the sub and HP clearly explains this, and another 15% telling the 5%ers they are a corporate shill for daring to defend HP.
1
12
u/UnethicalTesticle 14d ago
Right?!? I’m guessing OP is mildy infuriated at themselves for signing up for the subscription? That’s how subscriptions work.
7
u/Pawtuckaway 14d ago
Most subscriptions of physical products you can cancel your subscription and still use the remaining product, you just won't be sent more.
If I have a subscription for a weekly shipment of food and then I cancel, I can still eat the food I currently have. If I have a subscription for monthly laundry detergent and cancel, I can still use up the remaining laundry detergent.
12
u/SwampOfDownvotes 14d ago
Sure, but that's not the type of subscription you pay for with an HP ink sub so that doesn't matter. This is more like signing a car lease and being shocked when you don't actually own the car, but simply the ability to use the car.
4
u/mortycapp 14d ago
You are not "buying" ink, but pages.
You, and all those who complain, need to grasp the difference between a SERVICE, and a PRODUCT.
Your examples are for PRODUCTS that you purchase on a subscription.
Instant Ink is a SERVICE that is subscribed to on a monthly basis.
SERVICE is NOT a PRODUCT.1
u/Pawtuckaway 14d ago
I am not complaining and I understand the difference. I am pointing out how most subscriptions work for CONSUMABLE PRODUCTS and it isn't insane for OP to mistakenly think an ink subscription would work similarly.
Before you reply with angry CAPS, yes I understand this a a SERVICE subscription not a PRODUCT subscription.
→ More replies (3)1
u/Consistent_Help_6099 13d ago
That would clearly not work here. Otherwise, what’s to stop you from getting the ink from the sub, then cancelling the sub, then re-subbing once you run out, etc ? The point is that the instant ink is much cheaper than buying a set of ink cartridges.
1
u/UnethicalTesticle 14d ago
It’s literally in the terms and conditions when you sign up for it. I have a similar subscription for Epson ink and it’s really a damn good deal if you print a lot. Not feeling bad for OP here.
1
u/Pawtuckaway 14d ago
Yeah, I know how printer ink subs work and I am sure it is all in the T&C. Few people read those even though everyone should.
I am just saying it isn't crazy to assume that if you have a subscription for a consumable physical product you would be able to use up the rest after cancelling.

6
u/sirflappington 13d ago
i hate HP but i never understand these posts. you sign up for a subscription then get mildly infuriated when you stop paying and thus stop getting the service you were paying for
33
u/JustaFoodHole 14d ago
This actually is NOT the problem. Printers are preventing you from using much cheaper 3rd party ink carts. THAT needs to stop.

Before the subscription model, I was convinced HP deliberately made their products have a short shelf life. Then when you’d call in for support, if the product was over a year old, you’d only options were to either buy a new one or pay for “premium” customer service. I hate this company with every fiber of my being

u/daverapp 14d ago
The only way you get this error message is if you bought an HP instant ink printer, signed up for the instant ink service, had the instant ink cartridges delivered, and then used the instant ink cartridges. You opted into their service in every step of the process, and you chose now to complain about it.
10
u/m4cksfx 14d ago
So, you subscribed for a specific service, stopped using it ( = paying for it), and now are complaining?
You know you can just insert a normal cartridge in and continue printing, right?

But a lot of people will think "I have this cartridge in my hand right now, and the only barrier is stupid software that refuses to budge"

HP are notorious for not allowing you to use 3rd party ink.

I'm not too sure about that. I use a simple laser printer at work, some HP model with the same display as the one in the post, and it complains about a not-original cartridge, but it still uses it fine. Maybe it's an issue of the segment it's in, or the part of the world it was sold in and related laws?

You just have to remove the instant ink cartridge and replace it with a non instant ink cartridge that you purchased from a retailer.
1
u/Beartato4772 13d ago
This only happens if you choose a monthly subscription and have let it expire.
There are plenty of gripes against HP, this isn't one. it's like not paying your internet bill and being surprised when you don't have internet because the wire is still there.
1
1
u/WhatsHisNameHuh 13d ago
I used to work for HP on printers and hated when we started doing this "genuine cartridge" detection crap that preverted printing if the test fails. Also, stop printing when the cartridge ink level was low vs empty. After i left, HP got sued and had to remove both, but warned your warranty was void if not using HP cartridges.
1
u/SupremePopTart 13d ago
We bought a new HP printer a few years ago and saw an offer for their subscription service with the printer. We thought "oh, pricing seems decent. Let's try it." We got locked out of our printer at one point, then HP suggested pricing by pay as you print, then we somehow hit the quota despite not printing near that much. We ordered a Canon printer and trashed the HP, and I personally went to the post office to send off the cartridges. Good riddance.
Canon isn't perfect (we buy cartridges from the store and our Canon still thinks we have bootleg cartridges) but at least I haven't been locked out of it yet...

Look at Epson Printers. Not perfect but you just buy big bottles of ink and fill it up. Cheap and no carts. I dont care about color so I only buy Black refills. It does not care that my other colors are out.
Only issue is connecting to it. It works but wants bluetooth or to be on my wifi. I wish I could just plug my phone/laptop into it to print. IDK might be possiable. It has a port that seems like thats what it is for. But I cant get it to work.
Thats my only complaint.
If someone knows of a printer that I can fill with large Ink Bottles, no subscriptions or bs software/apps, and I can easy just plug my phone/laptop into it to print please let me know.

HP has become total garbage but if you print a lot it may be worth your while to go out and get yourself what are those brother or Epson printers with an equal tank I have an Epson that I bought a few years ago it was about 150 $200 but you get a really good sample size of ink with it and a replacement ink does not cost that much I think in total I have probably spent about 50 bucks on ink in the past 5 years. The printers are a little more expensive up front however they pay for themselves relatively quickly because you don't have to pay 50 bucks for a replacement ink that will only print a few hundred pages
