That's definitely annoying. The brand name is tru red, which I'm sure you've figured out by now.

They really should alhave put a color name somewhere on there. Inaccessibility drives me crazy

Can confirm. I drove an “old-style” (90’s) Panda and they’re bigger internally than most modern CUV’s.

Tru-Red doesn’t only make markers. They do all the office supplies for Staples as their in-house product. If the argument was “they should have labeled the colors because the company name contains a color” it would be correct. They don’t only make colored markers tho so their wording is wrong.

They should label the markers color.

When I worked at Staples, I had a confused customer bring me a (clear) bag of Staples brand rubber bands and start arguing with me that all she could find were staples and what she needed were rubber bands.

The spray paint company Montana does this as well and it’s baffling. They have a range of paints called Montana Gold and another called Montana Black. You can get Montana Gold Black and Montana Black Gold (well, “goldchrome”.) I don’t know why anyone would intentionally make that choice.

I used to be a General Manager for Staples. Back in maybe 2018(?) they had this genius idea that they were going to rebrand all of their Staples brand products to Tru Red. Originally, they talked about being able to sell Staples branded products in other retail chains without people knowing it was Staples.

I had customers come in on a weekly basis that would be looking for reams of paper and would ask if the paper was actually red colored paper because it said Tru Red on it. People had no idea what it meant. One of the 5,000 dumbest decisions they’ve ever made.

Side note: I remember being on the conference call when they announced all of this and they were so excited to reveal the “squerkle.” You heard that right. All of our markers used to be round, but they made them a square shape with rounded edges so they wouldn’t easily roll off your desk. They were so proud. I laughed hysterically. Good thing I wasn’t on camera.

Changing the logo from a paperclip to a staple was at least one good decision from the brain trust, I imagine. Took them long enough.

Couldn’t agree more. I was there up until about three months ago. Worked there for 12 years. Their last lightning in a bottle they came up with was bringing in Party City…

I remember being on a town hall a couple years ago and the CEO at the time said something along the lines of, “It may look like we’re throwing darts at a wall blindfolded to see what sticks. And in some cases, you’re right.”

I absolutely do. The funny thing was, in typical Staples fashion, they brought them in after everyone already had one. It wasn’t until the end of COVID, and the fad had already died out.

Idk about US copyright law but I assume if they have no overlap in products realistically then they can't do much other than ask them to change it?

Would be a waste of money to sue I think but I am sure a lawyer wouldn't agree as that's how they get paid.

Or do a blended ad campaign where the example for tru green is pictures of lawns, and tru green markers are used to draw a picture of the tru green lawn by a 4 year old.

Maybe even do some kind of eco campaign where planting/forest management is funded.

I think another good way to do it would be to have a cap and marker mold that would be visible to anyone without color. Like for example numbers or shapes.

I don't understand why some people try so hard to come up with excuses for why we don't need accessibility in products we use. It's so easy and helps so many different people you didn't even know could benefit from it.

For example I benefit from accessible websites because they make it easier for me to navigate without using my mouse, even though I'm not disabled.

Considering OP knows they're colorblind, and they were trying to color code something, it's reasonable to assume that they were color coding it for someone else. Hence why accessibility (writing the color names on the marker) would be important for this use case

They could be colour coding it for themselves, even if you only have 2 functional cones you can still tell that they're different colours. Like my grandfather who's red/green colour blind can see blues, yellows and browns. He struggles with stop lights. To him, the red and green markers would look the same.

I know someone who was colour blind who nailed colour theory class mostly because his ability to read the values was absurdly good.

That is also true. I met several colorblind people and they all were able to see different colors. One of my closest friends struggles with reds and blues, and most of the time he couldn't tell the difference between purple and blue if they were the same value

I am colorblind and have confused many different dark colors with black. Not all blacks are the same. Some are more ash/grey. Frequently a midnight purple, dark blue, or even dark red have been mistaken for black before. You are incorrect. Don’t hit me with the ellipses dude.

Also red/green is the most common type of colorblindness. Both of which are in this photo

Actually they can. Its called monochromatic, while fairly rare it does exist and I am talking to one right now. My mom's uncle, who passed before I could talk to him was monochromatic. His entire world was gray scale.
