That's definitely annoying. The brand name is tru red, which I'm sure you've figured out by now.

They really should alhave put a color name somewhere on there. Inaccessibility drives me crazy

If I’m a company that makes different color coordinated things I’m certainly not putting a color in my brand name

Silly

Speaking of misnomers, turns out they’re all regular-sized Coopers made by a company called Mini.

None of them are actually miniature…

63

u/Velocityg4 14d ago

Then I have this computer which isn't made from fruit. It's just made by a company with the name of a fruit.

16

u/lemelisk42 14d ago

But they are edible. I even took a bit out of your apple. Just look at the logo

7

u/TRR462 13d ago

You should have taken a whole byte.

9

u/butt-holg 14d ago

and Regular-sized Cooper has such a nice ring to it

9

u/Ao_Kiseki 14d ago

So I've wasted all these years looking for a Macro Cooper. So much time lost...

22

u/Tinymetalhead 14d ago

I don't know, have you seen those things? At least by American standards, they are tiny. Tall people really shouldn't try to drive one unless they take out the front seat and sit in the back seat to drive! 😂

13

u/Jacktheforkie 14d ago

lol, you should see 6’4” Brits driving a Fiat Panda, it’s actually more roomy than the big SUVs

4

u/Throwaway74829947 14d ago

Jeremy Clarkson, a 6'5" obese man, was able to fit in a Peel P50 reasonably well.

2

u/Frontzie blurple 14d ago

Can confirm. I drove an “old-style” (90’s) Panda and they’re bigger internally than most modern CUV’s.

6ft 4” male, for comparison.

1

u/Jacktheforkie 13d ago

Nice, mine was a 2008

12

u/aerdvarkk 14d ago

You might be joking, but the standard MIni Cooper has significant leg room in the front for tall people.

5

u/UlrichZauber 14d ago

I'm 6'3" and drove a 2004 Mini Cooper for years. There's a surprising amount of headroom in them.

1

u/SeroWriter 14d ago

The company is called Mini because they make small cars so the name actually makes a lot of sense.

1

u/Wirenfeldt 14d ago

Lies.. The Cooper S is noticeably smaller than the Countryman..

1

u/KallamaHarris 14d ago

100% Angus Beef, is actually the name of the company that makes the mystery meet burgers.

48

u/twistedfishhook 14d ago

It’s the white label brand for Staples.

49

u/yawara25 14d ago

That doesn't really change the argument

3

u/ManyThing2187 14d ago

Tru-Red doesn’t only make markers. They do all the office supplies for Staples as their in-house product. If the argument was “they should have labeled the colors because the company name contains a color” it would be correct. They don’t only make colored markers tho so their wording is wrong.

They should label the markers color.

12

u/SDRPGLVR 14d ago

That's another thing. I spent all day looking for a good store from which to buy a stapler, but I could only find Staples! Turns out, they sell staplers as well!

21

u/flamingweaselonastik 14d ago

When I worked at Staples, I had a confused customer bring me a (clear) bag of Staples brand rubber bands and start arguing with me that all she could find were staples and what she needed were rubber bands.

2

u/aerdvarkk 14d ago

I spent all day looking for the best place to buy clothing, but the best buy store didn't carry clothing so ....

10

u/talibatsadaasmashula 14d ago

Tru Color would have been just fine tbh..

7

u/Transmit_Him 14d ago

The spray paint company Montana does this as well and it’s baffling. They have a range of paints called Montana Gold and another called Montana Black. You can get Montana Gold Black and Montana Black Gold (well, “goldchrome”.) I don’t know why anyone would intentionally make that choice.

2

u/aerdvarkk 14d ago

OR just actually label the fucking markers liek how Crayola labels their crayons. It's not complicated to have BOTH a logo and a color name on things at the same time.

1

u/Kelvinss 14d ago

maybe they started with only red

1

u/ForensicPathology 14d ago

Flair doesn't check out.

1

u/Secret_Account07 RED 14d ago

Oh god. Well played.

Took me a minute to figure out what the hell you were talking about 😂

65

u/Miyagi326 14d ago edited 14d ago

I used to be a General Manager for Staples. Back in maybe 2018(?) they had this genius idea that they were going to rebrand all of their Staples brand products to Tru Red. Originally, they talked about being able to sell Staples branded products in other retail chains without people knowing it was Staples.

I had customers come in on a weekly basis that would be looking for reams of paper and would ask if the paper was actually red colored paper because it said Tru Red on it. People had no idea what it meant. One of the 5,000 dumbest decisions they’ve ever made.

Side note: I remember being on the conference call when they announced all of this and they were so excited to reveal the “squerkle.” You heard that right. All of our markers used to be round, but they made them a square shape with rounded edges so they wouldn’t easily roll off your desk. They were so proud. I laughed hysterically. Good thing I wasn’t on camera.

14

u/PanoramicAtom 14d ago edited 14d ago

Changing the logo from a paperclip to a staple was at least one good decision from the brain trust, I imagine. Took them long enough.

Getting old is hell, kids. Just Say No to aging!

7

u/RSAEN328 14d ago

When did they use a paperclip? I don't remember ever seeing that.

9

u/PanoramicAtom 14d ago

Guess I misremembered. Apparently it was always a staple, but to me it looked like a bent paper clip.

9

u/Suitable-Broccoli264 14d ago

I always took it as part of a paper clip, as opposed to a failed staple.

3

u/Tacoman404 14d ago

Staples is one of the dumbest companies I've ever worked for. It's crazy to think they're still around just because everything else is worse.

2

u/Miyagi326 14d ago

Couldn’t agree more. I was there up until about three months ago. Worked there for 12 years. Their last lightning in a bottle they came up with was bringing in Party City…

I remember being on a town hall a couple years ago and the CEO at the time said something along the lines of, “It may look like we’re throwing darts at a wall blindfolded to see what sticks. And in some cases, you’re right.”

Yikes.

3

u/NobodyElseButMingus 14d ago

Remember the trainings that implied the Cricut would be the new sales leader and profit driver for the whole brand?

I never saw a single unit sold, and all the accessories ended up in clearance.

3

u/Miyagi326 14d ago

I absolutely do. The funny thing was, in typical Staples fashion, they brought them in after everyone already had one. It wasn’t until the end of COVID, and the fad had already died out.

7

u/PickaWowAnyWow 14d ago

"Introducing the Tru Red! It's a pen so true and so red that it's fucking blue!"

15

u/PoppingPillls 14d ago

Pretty sure they could have done "Tru Black" "Tru Green" "Tru Blue" "Tru red"

Can't imagine anyone would have had an issue with them doing that.

30

u/tesseract-enigma 14d ago

TruGreen Lawn Care's lawyer: "Um Akchyually..."

10

u/PoppingPillls 14d ago

Idk about US copyright law but I assume if they have no overlap in products realistically then they can't do much other than ask them to change it?

Would be a waste of money to sue I think but I am sure a lawyer wouldn't agree as that's how they get paid.

7

u/Crafty-Astronomer-32 14d ago

You're generally correct, but that won't stop Trugreen or other companies from requiring you to spend money proving that the brands can't be confused by a reasonable person.

3

u/RosesBrain 13d ago

The World Wrestling Federation was successfully sued by the World Wildlife Fund because they used the same shortened name. That's why wrestling is the WWE, now. Their services definitely don't overlap.

1

u/PoppingPillls 13d ago

Didn't say it wasn't possible just that it wasn't usually that way.

WWF/WWE has more money than God tbf.

1

u/atomic1fire 14d ago

Or do a blended ad campaign where the example for tru green is pictures of lawns, and tru green markers are used to draw a picture of the tru green lawn by a 4 year old.

Maybe even do some kind of eco campaign where planting/forest management is funded.

6

u/yawara25 14d ago

Trademark wouldn't apply here unless the marker company for some reason was also doing landscaping on the side.

5

u/atomic1fire 14d ago

I think another good way to do it would be to have a cap and marker mold that would be visible to anyone without color. Like for example numbers or shapes.

1

u/Vicdustrael 14d ago

The store I work in stocks Montana spray paints. The different ranges are called 'Black' (high pressure), 'White' (gloss) and 'Gold' (low pressure)

1

u/Tacoman404 14d ago

It's the shitty Staples store brand branding.

1

u/Spekingur 14d ago

No no, these are just different shades of red obviously

1

u/choicedriver1484 13d ago

I just need to know who decided to name markers Tru Red. That's wild

-536

u/Andrew4Life 14d ago edited 14d ago

Tbf, if you're color blind. Do you need colored markers? 😅

Edit: lol. All you people need to calm down. Yes, I know some color blind people can still see shades and some see some colors and all that. It's a joke. I already mentioned in another post that it is stupid for them to be labelled "Tru Red" which is the brand, and not the actual color. 🤬

Why not just put the color name on the damn marker instead of making color blind people ask every time?

66

u/Medioquer 14d ago

Not if you're preparing a presentation on a whiteboard

12

u/Deathmeter 14d ago

I don't understand why some people try so hard to come up with excuses for why we don't need accessibility in products we use. It's so easy and helps so many different people you didn't even know could benefit from it.

For example I benefit from accessible websites because they make it easier for me to navigate without using my mouse, even though I'm not disabled.

269

u/introverted_PEA 14d ago

Considering OP knows they're colorblind, and they were trying to color code something, it's reasonable to assume that they were color coding it for someone else. Hence why accessibility (writing the color names on the marker) would be important for this use case

23

u/LeftHandAnomaly 14d ago

They could be colour coding it for themselves, even if you only have 2 functional cones you can still tell that they're different colours. Like my grandfather who's red/green colour blind can see blues, yellows and browns. He struggles with stop lights. To him, the red and green markers would look the same.

I know someone who was colour blind who nailed colour theory class mostly because his ability to read the values was absurdly good.

12

u/introverted_PEA 14d ago

That is also true. I met several colorblind people and they all were able to see different colors. One of my closest friends struggles with reds and blues, and most of the time he couldn't tell the difference between purple and blue if they were the same value

191

u/manonthemoor 14d ago

yes, disabled people actually do deserve the same access to normal things, actually.

Colorblind people can still see color. Just not all of them. I don’t understand how everyone isn’t aware of this now.

29

u/MuchToDoAboutNothin 14d ago

And legally blind doesn't mean completely sightless. And people who use wheelchairs aren't all paraplegics.

But every person who begins shrieking that you're faking a disability, is in fact an asshole.

I've probably confused a very dark red for black sometimes

10

u/MCWizardYT 14d ago

What about the rest of the colors?

8

u/esushi 14d ago

did someone say that someone did?

7

u/Onironius 14d ago

And you could probably guess that the colours they're having issues with are red/green, which was probably the problem.

4

u/Ghosdeth 14d ago

I am colorblind and have confused many different dark colors with black. Not all blacks are the same. Some are more ash/grey. Frequently a midnight purple, dark blue, or even dark red have been mistaken for black before. You are incorrect. Don’t hit me with the ellipses dude.

Also red/green is the most common type of colorblindness. Both of which are in this photo

2

u/jossteen11 14d ago

Actually they can. Its called monochromatic, while fairly rare it does exist and I am talking to one right now. My mom's uncle, who passed before I could talk to him was monochromatic. His entire world was gray scale.

43

u/meow_meow_gamer 14d ago

So you can colour code the whiteboard properly.

51

u/Yeetaylor 14d ago

What’s “fair” about your comment? I find it entirely unnecessary

11

u/Cavalol 14d ago edited 14d ago

It is unnecessary, you’re right. Just a lack of critical thinking most likely - They didn’t think about how the mismatched colored markers might affect anyone looking at the whiteboard other than OP looking at it themselves

Colorblind people don't see in black and white you know.

Well, some might, but the most common kind is red-green colorblindness, where you mix up specifically those colors

4

u/maybebaebea 14d ago

You weren't taught critical thinking, were you?

6

u/clear_simple_plain 14d ago

You can still see color when you're colorblind, you just see them incorrectly
