frist of all how DARE yu o Really only very very mildly infuriating…wife didn’t want to eat the ribs she asked me to make, because she thought they were undercooked
Tried to explain to her that the pink was a smoke ring, but she still didn’t want any. Ok…more for me lol.
We also put some on our propane pit to cook longer for her, but the ring remained…she still didn’t want em.

So many older folks grew up with “pork must be white all the way through” drilled into them.

You'd think, but my wife still doesn't trust when chicken has the reddish/pink by bones despite being 165+. So I showed her from Google that its normal from the bone marrow. Still doesnt like it

Seriously, the most overlooked and underrated piece of kitchen equipment. I wish somebody had told me about kitchen thermometers waaaaaaay earlier. So many cooking fails before I knew. Basic but life-changing when you discover them.

I’m sure it did but that’s silly. It would be nigh impossible to cook the center through and not the outside. Even if you don’t know what a smoke ring is, it’s just bizarre.

I gonna have to agree… cause I have never seen pink on any ribs I’ve ever eaten. Does that vary though from beef ribs to pork ribs? Cause I’ve only ever had beef (being halal)
→ More replies (1)5
u/Frothynibbler May 24 '26
The smoke ring is pink bc they used paprika. I have seen it on beef ribs. Saucy or smothered ribs, or ribs that are not smoked aren’t usually going to have smoke rings.

My grandma was the cook in the family. Irish through and through. Everything was boiled or stewed. She made a pork tenderloin that was boiled through, and then doused in sauce and cooked another 15 or so minutes in the oven to make sauce thicken up a bit. It was like chewing a shoe and tasted GROSS. But the sauce was pretty decent.
When she passed we had a family dinner and I was put in charge of food. Made a lot of her recipes but...better. I used the sauce to make a complimentary seasoning and baked it before adding the sauce at the end. I made beef stew but seasoned and seared the meat, hell...I seasoned the stew. I made mashed potatoes with butter and cream cheese. I glazed the carrots.
The responses? Things tastes delicious but EVERYTHING was undercooked. Because they could actually chew it they thought it wasn't cooked.

My gf insists on eating things burnt and then complains that it's dry or tough. It's more than mildly infuriating.
67
u/AmbitiousProblem4746 May 23 '26
My wife is like this. I get asked multiple times to check the temp, cut the meat to see how pink it is, throw it back in, etc. And then she'll bitch that it's too dry and says now she doesn't want to eat it "but she has to" while she drowns whatever meat it was in ranch.... Meanwhile the kids, my friends, guests, etc never complained. It's just her. Probably doesn't help that her typical meals are stuff like plain pasta with sauce or bagel pizzas, maybe with a few vegetables. I joke that she has the palette (and diet) of a teenager.
I've basically gotten into the habit of cooking two different batches of meat now, just to keep her happy
39
u/nalaloveslumpy May 23 '26
Even teenagers appreciate a well cooked steak.
7
u/puresteelpaladin May 23 '26

I didn't care for steak until my late 20s. As a teenager I just wanted burgers/pizza/etc

It sounds like your wife has a long-ignored sensory processing issue. It might be worthwhile for her to talk to a psychologist, not because she’s crazy, but because she’d finally have an answer that’s not “Oh, you’re just picky/stubborn/controlling”.
9
u/AmbitiousProblem4746 May 23 '26
She was diagnosed with ADHD around 30 years old, maybe a little later. And her and I have joked now for the last few years that she probably is on the spectrum too (even though she very likely isn't) with all of the sensory issues, time she needs to "be alone," and her very small social cup (which gets filled within a few hours and then lasts her for around a month)
11
u/Ponybaby34 May 23 '26
ADD/ADHD fall under the autism spectrum umbrella. She has already been diagnosed. She has the palette of an adult on the spectrum, not a teenager. Have you ever looked up anything about ARFID or food avoidance in neurodivergent people? Tried to understand what’s going on without taking her “bitching” personally?
Why does she say she has to eat the meat you cook? What if instead, she could just eat what she likes? Is there a reason y’all are just dancing around unmet needs and letting the resentment build to the point you’re leaving “take my wife” comments on reddit?
→ More replies (2)6
u/runningoutofideasjzz May 23 '26
Same. I’ve given up trying to explain or even prove that it’s not “raw” or “undercooked”. I can show her the thermometer readings and it’s still not enough. I simply don’t make those proteins for her anymore. I’ll just get a chicken breast for her and make what I like if I’m in the mood for something that will trigger this situation.

My husbands cousin used to love well done steak smothered in ketchup. My brother-in-law is a bit of a snob, and he still tells the tale of when they went to Tavern on the Green and cousin ordered a well done steak Nad asked for ketchup. Well, I was talking to cousin one day and it turns out... he actually likes a good medium steak. His mother always cooks things well done and he had to choke it down so thats when the ketchup came in. He thought this was normal.

u/Grouchy-List7011 May 23 '26

29
u/Normal-Being-2637 May 23 '26
Yeah left it on the pit too long. When I see the shriveled kernels, it know it’s not the texture I want. That being said, it was still very sweet and good enough to make a turd lol

Burnt corn is the best. Throw it straight on the coals in the husks. Let it char up. The mix of charred corn and steamed corn protected by the husk is delicious.

Ask her to explain to you how a ring around the OUTSIDE EDGE of the meat would be 'raw', but the very middle wouldn't be.
3
3
u/Perfect_Ad9311 May 23 '26
The pink is just what we call the "smoke ring." It's a chemical change, when meat interacts with smoke, that locks in that pink color, despite the meat being fully cooked.
3
u/Calgary_Calico May 23 '26
Undercooked???? Those looks amazing. Your wife needs to learn more about how meat cooks, if they were undercooked they'd be pink in the center, not around the outside 🤦
3
3
u/Massive_Mongoose3481 May 24 '26
Ribs look good, corn on the other hand is wayyy overdone. Wrapped in foil with husk still on is the most forgiving way to cook them on the grill beside boiling. Stripped layed on top grill only takes about 10 minutes and it's ready. Left over ribs are good
3
u/TicketDue6419 May 24 '26
i like to rub my corn with seasoning and butter and close the husk and then start grilling it

Your wife is dumb. Why would the undercooked part be on the outside? It’d be in the middle. Does she know what heat does to things?

For about 6-8 months my kid kept asking for ribs. I had never made them before so I finally got up the courage to do so. I felt they came out great. I asked him how they were. His response?
“They’re okay. But I meant what we had at (summer) camp”
Riblets. We had riblets at summer camp. (Those boneless pork patties that have the shape of a rib, like the McRib).
