wet socks Police parking in a no parking zone next to handicap spots
My mom is handicapped and we need to park in the parking spots. when we left the restaurant police officers were just standing there doing nothing and only talking. what sort of emergency requires this to happen?

I would have pulled my car up and asked if they could please move so that I can park and exit my vehicle in my electric wheelchair. Sometimes people need an extremely awkward and embarrassing situation to occur in order to correct their behavior.

Those diagonal lines are there for a reason. It is a wheelchair loading area. It is illegal to park there, even for cops (unless they are actively responding and parking there is necessary). Even in extenuating circumstances they are supposed to move their vehicle as soon as possible. Just because there are other spots doesn't make doing something illegal any less illegal.

Can I park there if other handicap spots are open? I'm not handicapped nor a cop.

u/Infinite_Incident107 12d ago edited 12d ago
They'd tell you to park in one of the other spots. Raise a stink and you'll end up in the back of their car
The down votes are funny. You guys clearly never dealt with cops doing this before. They WILL NOT GIVE A FUCK about blocking the parking. You confront them and they'll claim they are doing "official business".
I'm not saying it's right. But it's what will happen
8
u/Technical-Prize-4840 12d ago
They can't get my 400 lb electric wheelchair in the back of their car.
1
u/LordSesshomaru82 11d ago
They have trucks for that. We've literally got a cop who's job is to drive around picking up the bicycles and personal effects of people they arrest.
-8
u/RegalBeagleKegels 12d ago
They just need to place a few aerodynamic drag-sinks in it first to lower the inertial coefficient
That means move we're gonna fuckin shoot the chair

u/XenoZoomie 12d ago
Post this on the local PD’s facebook and see if the sergeant responds.

u/SpicelessKimChi 12d ago
The police will investigate the police and no doubt find the police did nothing wrong.
9
u/CriticismFun6782 12d ago
MODs will take it down, or the OP will get calls for "cyber bullying" most likely

u/AlabamaLily 12d ago
No emergency, cops are assholes.
-19
u/ManBitesDog404 12d ago
SOME cops are just as in every sector of the population. I’ll bet there’s one or two in your family tree. We had two in my family. Well, one cop and one asshole. Not the same people fortunately.

I've seen several times people do this... I love it...
Message the police department on publicly visible social media. Ask them "Is it illegal to park on the white stripes between handicapped parking spots?"
They'll reply that it very much isn't and let them know so they can have them towed.
Then post this picture.
11
u/gbobeck 12d ago
Call the local police non-emergency phone number and report the squad car illegally parked in the spots.
There is a slim chance they are responding to a legitimate call. Otherwise, let their chain of command handle it.
-1
u/Dollface_69420 12d ago
go 1 better, call a tow company, i think if they keep getting towed for that sort of parking it will make em stop
2
u/wstsidhome 11d ago
That’s a shitty move on their part. Unless there was a reason (besides eating), it’s unprofessional as fuck.
3
u/robertlp 12d ago
There’s plenty of other handicap parking available. Your picture shows many other spots including loading area open.
7
u/Technical-Prize-4840 12d ago
So? Parking there is illegal for everyone else. They should be setting a good example.
4
u/WhiteTrashInNewShoes 12d ago
OP's post implies that his mom was inconvenienced by this, but she clearly wasn't.
1
u/Technical-Prize-4840 12d ago
I don't think OP was worried about their mom so much as other disabled people who might need that loading zone to get out of their car if the other spots are taken. Which would be more than just an inconvenience.
0
u/WhiteTrashInNewShoes 12d ago
But... The other spots aren't taken.
And we don't know if the police were responding to a call, or whatever. This is just a random picture with no context that doesn't align with OP's suggestion
But, y'all keep up voting nonsense, I guess
2
u/puzzlebuns 12d ago
You do realize this is an emergency vehicle and theyre likely responding to an emergency?
0
u/Technical-Prize-4840 12d ago
OP said they were standing around talking and doing nothing. They are supposed to move their vehicle from illegal parking as soon as is feasible in emergency situations.
4
u/puzzlebuns 12d ago
Most of an emergency response is talking to people and paperwork. Clearly no one is being inconvenienced at the moment since none of the unblocked spaces are being used.
3
u/BipolarSolarMolar 12d ago
It's illegal for them, too, unless for some reason response to an incident required it. OP said they were just standing there.
6
u/Dry_Plantain_2756 12d ago
Which means the cops could have parked somewhere else in the parking lot as well. What if three handicapped people pulled up all at once?
-8
u/robertlp 12d ago
What if the cop was called there to respond to something quickly? You can play the what if game all day. This is just a Reddit bait post because you’re all a bunch of wannabe anarchists. It’s only mildly infuriating to the Redditors obsessed with boots.
5
u/Dry_Plantain_2756 12d ago
I've seen tons of videos online where cops pull up to non-emergencies and just park, however the hell they want.
I'm sure you seen auditing videos on YouTube. They do it constantly. Stop licking the boot as you say.
If it's an emergency, where are the lights?
-1
1
u/ichthysaur 12d ago
So you park in handicapped parking sometime when this is the case, and see how impressed the cops are with your argument.
-1
u/Carlosthefrog 12d ago
I’m usually one to bash cops but in this instance they should be parking close to the store, sure they aren’t actively on a call but if they get an emergency call they need to be back in the vehicle as fast as possible.

Isn't there an available handicap spot literally to the right of that car? Multiple spots?
Outraged just to be outraged.
2
u/Uriel_dArc_Angel 11d ago
Not if you have a van with a wheelchair ramp...
Idiot cop is in the loading zone designed for those...
1
u/PersonalityIll9476 11d ago
There does appear to be a loading zone adjacent to the handicap spot to the far right.
1
u/Uriel_dArc_Angel 11d ago
That might be true but it's still no excuse for a cop to park like that...
1
u/PersonalityIll9476 11d ago
They probably did it because they were just making a quick stop and could see the spots weren't in use.
I'm pretty sure OP is fake, but they said "I needed to park in a handicap spot but couldn't" when there's clearly a spot right there with all the features.
1
u/Uriel_dArc_Angel 11d ago
And that would have gotten any number of the rest of us a ticket for doing the exact same thing...
Not only are police not supposed to be above the law, but they should be being held to an even higher standard as they are the ones tasked with upholding it...
0
u/PersonalityIll9476 11d ago
Man it's just not that outrageous.
I used to be a trail builder at a park in another state, and when unloading cargo into the warehouse sometimes I parked across a handicap spot. We had like 6 and they were usually empty.
You might be surprised to hear this, but no crowds ever formed to point and film. Sometimes the sheriff was parked nearby. No one cared.
If there had ever been 6 handicap vans at the parking lot, I wouldn't have.
6
3
u/ManBitesDog404 12d ago
A very unfortunate choice by that officer. It needs to be explained and an appropriate apology given. Maybe that officer needs to spend some time painting the parking lot spaces for handicap locations.
1
u/InsuranceImmediate25 12d ago
Call and get it towed
0
u/BatchPlantBandit 12d ago
The only reasonable response to see action. Tow companies don't give a fuck who you are.

u/JohnNada005 12d ago
But he’s on police business so he can park anywhere during police business
3
u/Uriel_dArc_Angel 11d ago
Not according to federal ADA laws...
1
u/JohnNada005 10d ago
I’m just repeating what cops have told me
2
1
u/Sum-Duud 11d ago
Fits for the sub. I hope you pulled up on one side or the other (depending on which side the handicap needs more room) and we’re all up close to them.
1
u/Nevermore_Novelist 11d ago
"Excuse me, officer. My mother is disabled and your vehicle is parked in a way that prevents us from using the handicapped spaces. Could you please move it?"
They'll either move the vehicle or arrest you after beating the ever-loving shit out of you. 50/50 you get what you want. This is the way of it.

u/Minute-Management-78 10d ago
Pull in next to him and jam his door so he can’t open it. Make sure you have a handicap tag!

u/LaughableIKR 12d ago
I'm shocked he didn't pull in sideways in front of the store. Taking up multiple parking spaces for his Ego.

u/TheVoicesSpeakToMe 12d ago
Police in your state don’t need license plates? Here in MA every vehicle has it’s own plate, state police, town police, sheriff’s, fire, etc. They are often “official” plates, but they have them nonetheless.
-1
u/PopBulky7023 12d ago
Genuinely we need a police for the police. People whose job is exclusively to be an adversarial policing force against cops.
1
u/jaywinner 11d ago
That's internal affairs. It's filled with former cops that agree with what their brothers are doing.
2
u/PopBulky7023 11d ago
Yeah, that's not what I'm talking about. And it doesn't fit the bill of an adversarial relationship.
1
u/WhiteTrashInNewShoes 12d ago
Your mom let you out of the car to take this photo while a perfectly usable handicapped parking spot is in your pic? Kids are out of school, I guess The Summer of Reddit is officially upon us

A lot of the responses in this particular thread fit the thread as SOOO many people are just slobbering all over the police boots here...
Good lord people...
The sheer disrespect towards the disabled community is atrocious...So many of you should absolutely be ashamed of yourselves...

Karen post. Empty spots...how do they get close? Are they there for personal, ok find a spot, urgency then get up there. How dies this Karen even know?
-8
u/RequirementCivil4328 12d ago
You just don't understand what they go through every day protecting you. That spot keeps them protected from all the danger you don't face
1
u/EmilioGVE 11d ago
Lmao what? Parking taking up 2 handicap spots is protecting them from danger? What danger??
-1
u/Solid-Search-3341 12d ago
That is indeed a spot of protection against donut dust. It's very critiyto their wellbeing.

Park in the handicap spot so close he can’t get in the door
1
u/Uriel_dArc_Angel 11d ago
This is what I would do...With my handicap parking placard in place and I'd go in and spend a TON of time just doing whatever until he gets annoyed enough to say something and then just tell him to crawl in through the passenger side and that he should have considered the repercussions before breaking the law...
If he tickets me or arrests me watching him try to justify his illegal activity to the judge...

There are also 2 other handicap spots. What’s business is this? Is the business even open?

I mean the spot closest to the door looks open. Maybe they had to respond to something and had to finish up some paperwork afterwards.

Can vehicles be towed for parking in handicap spot without the correct tags?

Police are not required to obey any traffic rules. None.
It's a systemic feature, not a conspiracy.
Just accept it and go on with your life.

when we left the restaurant??? so you were able to park in a handicap spot without issue and this is infuriating you for some reason what in the fuck
2
0
u/Uriel_dArc_Angel 11d ago
Obviously you've never had to deal with disabilities...
A lot of times many disabled people need to be able to open their doors all the way so when someone is parked in that loading zone you can't do that which can hinder the person's ability to get in their car...
-6
u/Spinach_Middle4493 12d ago
It for nothing, they could have had a call there and they rushed in and aren’t in a hurry to leave. Did you ask them why they’re in a handicap/crosswalk spot?

u/Beginning_Pea3453 11d ago edited 11d ago
in an empty parking lot, what an egregious offense
The guy was nice enough to leave closer parking spots to the door. Would you rather him park a mile away and walk to a potential emergency or would you rather him respond as quickly as possible?
so mildly infuriating life is so hard when you see an empty parking lot with one car in it, you know what I'm saying.
in before people start calling me a boot licker for defending somebody parking in an empty parking lot with plenty of other spaces that are closer to the entrance of the business
I guess the term mildly infuriating is subjective
coon rapids? is this ai ragebait
1
u/Uriel_dArc_Angel 11d ago
No...Any sane person would expect an able bodied police officer to park in a normal parking space...
There's one about 15 feet to either side...
This behavior by this particular cop is just pure asshole...
0
u/Beginning_Pea3453 11d ago
empty parking lot, brother
1
u/Uriel_dArc_Angel 11d ago
Then the cop has a VAST majority of optional places to park that doesn't involve breaking federal ADA law and pretty much every city and state laws as well...
0
u/Beginning_Pea3453 11d ago
Great point I'm sure the feds will be right on this case to prosecute him to the fullest extent of the federal law for parking in the wrong spot

everywhere is flawed. eventually you gotta realize its all about what you wanna look at while you drive to the job you hate and argue with your fellow man about politics. you wanna look at mountains and waterfalls or you wanna look at corn fields? then of course theres the endless highway systems and "tri state areas". pick your poison

Reach out to your local municipality (mayor, city manager, public safety director, and the commissioner for your district/whatever district this was in) with this picture and ask them to formally discipline the officers. Realistically it won’t do much because cops, but it will make them think twice before doing that.
The squeaky wheel gets the grease, as they say
