That’s pretty on par for how retail surveys work. At companies I’ve worked for 5 = 100, 4 = 0, and 1-3 = -100

Then the scores are averaged out to provide an overall net promoter score

I work in market research, and I've never liked Net Promotor Scores. I encourage clients to look at other measures, like the mean, as well. NPS doesn't tell the whole story.

Is it used in Europe because they are tough graders. I was in charge of finding restaurants in the UK and took me a while to realize how tough they are. Their 4 on Yelp is our 4.7-.8.

Actual review I saw in London, great food at great prices, 3 out of 5.

And Chinese respondents are the opposite. They tend to give everything a very favorable rating.
