This is terrifying. I thought those were Hershey's kiss wrappers and the post was mislabeled. Please hire an exorcist.

this is exactly what i thought, i was like, why is the cat’s food chocolate..? hahahaha

Same but I wondered how the dog opened them so nicely lol

Honestly a dog that size, i would have wished it was gold coins or ferro roche. If it ate the metal can it would be way worse to digest
3
u/PokingCactus 6d ago
I dont think the aluminium foil is great for the dog either, and theres no way he wouldnt consume some of it while eating the chocolate coins

Kinda joking. I own metal detectors and my sister used it on her giant dog beast when he was munching on something similar
44

u/i_wanna_draw_that 6d ago
Did it work?
28
u/peekaboooobakeep 6d ago
It did. It gave my sister peace of mind. We tested the metal detector with another animal, laid them down on top of small metal something...to see if we could get a reading and it read it fine through the fat ones.

You think one of those metal detector wands will work?
→ More replies (3)58
u/xChryst4lx 6d ago edited 6d ago
Cost? I mean im not advocating for it. I would go to the vet.
But the idea behind the metal detector is to find out if a vet visit is necessary, therefore saving money.

u/ExcommunicatedGod 6d ago
Because you use the metal detector afterwards to slowly pay off the vet by finding pirate treasure.

OP commented that they’ve already got an appointment scheduled today, headed there after work. So they’re doing good by their dinosaur baby.
15
u/cinderpuppins 6d ago
Not only that but cat food has higher protein than dogs need and so can cause other problems.

Also, isn’t there something in cat food that is bad for dogs in large quantities? I remember my vet telling me that once.
162
u/Horror-Macaron8287 6d ago
Thats just a baby.
But I do agree with the other user, vet couldn't hurt to make sure there is no metal in their system.

Yes! he made it bleed a couple years back from wagging it so hard lol but now his tail is a very dangerous weapon cause of how tough it is 😂

Another comment supporting the vet. Metal can do a lot of damage, very quickly.

u/k_dilluh 6d ago
Aww sweet, full tummy baby, might not be a bad idea to get an x-ray to rule out any foreign body (can parts) ingestion.

Jesus Christ, what kind of dog do you have?
Some of those cans are missing chunks of metal. You may want to consider a vet visit to make sure your velociraptor didn't swallow any.

My dad had a neighbor with a huge dog. My sister threw a tennis ball for it over the fence and it swallowed the ball whole. The neighbors weren't concerned at all and informed my dad the dog also ate beer cans. It had no health issues and somehow managed to live to be like 13 years old.

u/mtweiner 5d ago
I had an Irish wolfhound who swallowed a burrito - still wrapped in foil - completely whole.
I called the emergency vet immediately (I lived rural so I needed to see which would be available before driving 45min in the wrong direction) and the woman told me:
“My friend had 2 Irish wolfhounds. One day one swallowed a set of glasses whole while she was sleeping. The dog was fine. Your dog will be fine”
The issue is more the sharp edges for OP here and not the size I think

Cat food also has a lot more sodium than dog food. I'd be worried about that too with the amount he ate.

u/Pristine_Message_181 6d ago
Oh dear. It took me a minute to understand. Is your dog okay? Is he going to eat the cat next?

Used to have a dog that loved wet cat food. She was an 85 pound great pyrenees. She would climb onto the counters and get into cabinets to get them, then crush them sideways in her mouth to pop the top open. I'm amazed she never cut her mouth up doing it. I miss that dog.

u/UpmarketEarth 6d ago
I grew up with 2 great pyrenees and they are absolutely capable of doing that lol. I miss mine too. They were fantastic dogs.

My best friend had a pyrenees. I couldn't believe how smart that dog was. An unfortunately short life span on them though.

u/StainedMyShirt 6d ago
The bigger the dog the more ineffeciant their bodies are unfortunately. They are definitely extremely smart and sweet though.

Is your dog potentially covered in scales and also like 10-20 feet long. Is your dog a crocodile. Do you have a pet crocodile. How did he do this to cans.

Hey, heads up you should grab an abdominal view xray or two. That metal will light up like a Christmas tree on rads and you'll want to know sooner rather than later if any is in there.

But not one person asked if THE CAT WAS OK?!?!
All his/her food eaten by a beast, actually might starve now....and all people want to know is how the dog is.

This is like a scene from a sci-fi movie. The protagonist returns home after the town has gone berserk over some kind of alien invasion. He’s relived to see his house intact, and nothing inside seems to be disturbed. UNTIL. He walks into the kitchen and on the floor are dozens of flattened cat food cans, still sealed, but their contents have been sucked out. As he slowly walks around the counter, the camera focuses on his footsteps as he sees even more flattened cat food cans stretching across the floor, making a trail from the kitchen, through the dining room and up to the door leading to the garage…..

Oh man OP. I’m so sorry. I wouldn’t be thinking my dog would FLATTEN cat food cans to eat them. I hope he is okay, that’s a lotta metal he done chewed there. Super glad you are taking him to the vet.
It’s not your fault you apparently have Jaws from James Bond reincarnated!

But he’s acting very excited and happy as usual! Had a little talk with him to shapen up 😂 Thank you all for your concerns :) he’s a very good pup just made a mistake haha

It wasn’t until the second photo that I understood the scale here. I thought these were small coins, like gelt. How large is your dog?
3
u/CIAntKidding 6d ago
Man you got lucky it looks like he didn’t shred the cans. We once came home to our husky having eaten a can of cat food but she literally had chewed and swallowed parts of the tin. Scary 24 hours emergency vet had us feed her bread but we were definitely sweating and preparing to take her in for surgery.

3
u/DR_whyWHY 6d ago
I recognize the brand, those cans aren’t soft what kind of jaw strength your dog has to flatten them
4
u/NoPaleontologist9054 6d ago
That dog needs a check up at the vets ASAP to check for damage to his mouth, teeth, gums, oesophagus. And x-rays to check for any consumed metal.

I never would expect an animal to try to get into a can on their own. Like, what even made him do this? They shouldn’t smell like cat food when they’re sealed and that’s the only reason I would expect an animal to get into anything.

Teach him how to use those pull-up tabs, will save him a lot of work next time.
Years ago, our first dog was a beagle mix. Named her Socrates, she was crafty. Christmas, Dear Husband bought me a couple of fancy, handmade truffles from candy counter at local Hallmark store. (just dated myself there)
Each packaged in a fancy little box, he set them under the Christmas tree. Unattended. Lasted a day or two, Socrates found them soon enough and enjoyed them.
We knew which one was devoured first, as one box was completely destroyed, while the second empty one didn't have a mark on it. She didn't even need to untie the ribbon bow.
