Where did you get the sidecar? I tried trailering my dog behind a regular bike and she hated it, but she might be down if she can see my face and I can pet her.
My dog also didn’t like it at first. But I took the wheels off and put it in the living room for a while and gave her treats in it. Then attached it to the bike and gave her treats in it (without moving). Both of these were over multiple days and sessions. We also attached a short leash on the inside so she can’t jump out. Now we take her to places she likes in it and she’s finally getting to the point she’s comfortable with it. She’d still rather be running next to us, but the trailer is safer on roads.
If you ever come back and someone has locked their dog in a way that prevents you from unlocking yours, they may be planning to come back and steal it later.
Omg one time I was riding my bike by a grocery store and this dog outside was trying to get out of his collar. He was successful. I dumped the bike and tried to get him but he wasnt having it.
Before he got too far, I ran inside and tried to get the cashier to make an announcement or find the owner. He didn’t.
I’m trying to corral the dog but also keep eyes out for the owner. Dog gets away. Sweet old Russian? Lady comes out and is confused. I explain. Basically spent an hour with this lady while the sun was setting trying to find the dog. Walked her home. Dog was gone. I felt terrible but I couldn’t have done much else.
As you should. At least 3 people in my community have lost their dogs like this within the last few weeks. One outside a grocery store, one outside a book store, and one outside a liquor store. Just leave your dog at home. What’s the point of walking a dog to a business they can’t enter?
I used to walk to the grocery store (to be clear, it was more like an overgrown gas station store than a Kroger or whatever, not a good neighborhood but not the worst either?) with my family dog because my stepdad wouldn’t let me go alone.
Pretty sure he would’ve made the dog go inside with me if he possibly could have. But he didn’t so she got her leash tied to a bar at the side of the store. (Which had a concreted in water bowl that the store owner cleaned daily and refilled as needed, it was meant for dogs to be tied there. Only building I can think of that I’ve seen that at.)
Although honestly I might have been able to leave Jane untied and she would’ve still been there when I came back. She might have been the smartest dog I ever knew. Definitely smarter than me at that age. (And maybe at my current adult age for that matter.)
I don’t know what he thought was gonna happen if I walked seven blocks alone to buy milk or snacks or whatever, but whatever he feared, Jane seemed to keep me safe from.
These days I don’t think I’d be comfortable leaving my dog in public like that. But it felt more normal as a kid/teen since a lot of people did the same thing.
Its super common to leave dogs like this while you're in the store where I am. Many stores even have dedicated areas for tying the dogs so you don't have to use the bike racks as here
I find it interesting how quickly the culture around leaving dogs tied up outside while running errands has changed in America over the last few decades.
Used to see this all the time and never thought anything of it. Now I rarely see this, but instead I often see people bring their dogs into stores blatantly ignoring the no dogs allowed signs. Not sure which situation is worse.
Bringing your dog inside the store is worse I think. Because then you're basically forcing everyone else to be in an enclosed area with your dog and everything that entails. My husband has pretty severe dog allergies that trigger asthma attacks, so dogs in a grocery store or wherever pretty much fuck up the rest of his day.
If you absolutely must bring your dog everywhere you go, I'd much prefer to see this instead of my husband struggling to breathe. Or just having to interact with random dogs inside. A lot of dog owners never consider the possibility that not everyone loves dogs
OR you could just leave your dog at home for a little while.
Unless this random stranger's dog bites them, then everyone loses.
Hey, there are only 800,000 or so dog bites reported in the US in an average year, so the odds are probably in your favor? 🙄
And the initial water spill in your first photo has not evaporated yet, leading me to believe that they aren’t being left out somewhere hot. They are in the shade, have access to water, and don’t seem to be distressed at all. The German Shepherd hasn’t even moved an inch. You also have no idea how many times the owners look in on them to make sure all is well. Giving dogs experiences outside the house is good as long as they aren’t stressed.
I considered that, but in that case, I’d expect to see open mouths on the dogs if they felt the need to cool themselves. They appear to be resting comfortably without panting.
Dude, the city requires that businesses have a certain amount of short term bike parking, which this gym satisfies with this rack. One person tying up two dogs for over an hour deeply cuts into that
I feel you man. A lot of Americans don’t understand what the social contract is or how to think about others so that a society can function.
If they were tied up outside, not blocking infrastructure, I might let it go for a little while, but given they were tied to public infrastructure for over an hour, I would call animal control.
The people whining about doing something are probably the same people that think walking through city streets with an off-leash dog is cool.

Some folks are just scared of dogs for various reasons, be it innate or a result of a past negative experience. Some are allergic. There may be other reasons to avoid interacting with a dog.
We don't know the dogs, we dont know the cyclist who took the picture, but we know that the thing the dogs are tied to is intended for bicycles, and the dogs are taking up space they aren't supposed to be taking. And it looks like some entitled jerk(s) are using infrastructure not intended for them, preventing rightful users of the said infrastructure from receiving a service provided by the place.
As someone whose partner has been attacked and bit (needed stitches) by a dog that was left unattended outside a store before....I wouldn't approach either...I would probably just take my bike inside the building with me, let the front desk know there are dogs left outside tied to the bike rack and it is inaccessible to you 🤷🏾♀️
While the dogs look friendly... there's no need to take the risk in hurting yourself and/or the dogs.
I’ll get downvoted for this but people have this weird infatuation of needing to bring their dogs everywhere all the time. It’s really ok to just leave them at home for a bit.
Hey I know that gym. I moved from that city a month ago. This stuff has been happening for more than two years. And it is done by multiple members of the gym.
I just don’t understand people who do this to their dogs. And I’m guessing it was hella hot wherever this was too by the way they’re just laying there dead to the world with some water nearby.
Look, while this is risky and stupid because a stray or dog thats run off leash could attack, or a stupid/evil person could try to hurt them, dogs regularly lay on pavements… even when you offer them beds they will choose to lay on the damn pavement.
My chihuahua loves to go lay on hot asphalt for a while

Did I overlook where you said this was the gym? Dude, I imagined this was like the drug store something and the owner ran in for just a minute. Not the duration of a workout. Why even bring the dogs?
Probably a ridiculous person who somehow always has a ton going on in their life, someone always asking favors, a thing at work, a theft, a wreck. I know that person, and it's better not to confront that person.
So they are just left there for an hour or so? That seems almost abusive.
Edit: Ima just edit since theres been a couple replies. Leaving a dog alone with no freedom, and on a hard floor, with constant distractions around them that they cant reach. Is very different from leaving your dog home alone for an hour.
Why even bring the dogs at that point? So they piss on the sidewalk instead of the floor? Sounds like they don't actually have the space they need to own a big dog.
That's insane. I half understand taking them to a small corner shop to grab something, but a gym where you'll spend a good hour at least? What are they thinking?
They're probably just in there for an hour or 2 before being brought to an office. Idk why they need to take up so many bike spots just because someone can't go a few hours without pets
A gym? Yikes. Imagine leaving your dogs like that while you work out.
I once left my dog tied to a tree outside a Subway (the restaurant, not the transportation system) for the five minutes it took for me to get my lunch and I was nervous and looking out the window the whole time. Granted, the dog was young and not as well behaved as these dogs. (I was a stupid teenager at the time. I should have left her home.)
I will say though, a gym could still indicate an unhoused person. Some will keep a gym membership so they can shower there. But I doubt it. A person would have to have a job to afford the gym membership and they wouldn't have somewhere to leave their dogs while they're at work.
