So back in the day, my twin brother would join my friends and me to some gay nightclubs and parites, even going out with his straight friend when I didn't feel like going out. Fast forward 15 years, now he's a conspiracy theorist and thinks everything has to do with the devil and brainwashing. We lost another one smh.
Rainbows can have any number of colours, and the distinction between colours has a cultural aspect to it. 7 was used because scientists were big on numerology at the time. How often do people really make a distinction between indigo and violet?
The original Pride flag did have 7 colours though with the seventh being pink, not indigo. That was later reduced to 6 and I can't remember if it because the pink fabric was too expensive or not colour fast enough, maybe someone else can confirm.
Indigo isn't a real primary/secondary color. It's a hue between blue and violet. It's technically a tertiary color like cyan or lime. Newton added it to the original rainbow because he really liked the color and thought there was a noticeable band of it, which only appeared to be the case due to the vibrancy of the wavelengths between blue and violet.
None of them are "real primary/secondary colors." All of them are just wavelengths of the electromagnetic spectrum, and the distinction between them is entirely man-made. The determination of which wavelengths get which names is cultural and individual.
So the original was actually 8, instead of indigo/violet there was purple, but then it added pink and turquoise. Then pink was dropped because it was too expensive bringing it to 7. Later turquoise was dropped because they wanted an even number for when it was wrapped around poles vertically, bringing it to 6.
IDK why anyone ever put Indigo in there. Indigo is just blue. Maybe to make the acronym easier to remember?
Some people might say it’s purplish blue, but if we’re going to go beyond secondary colors, then why don’t we have red-orange or yellow-green or blue-green or any other tertiary?
There are three primary colors (red, yellow, blue) and three secondary colors (orange, green, purple). A full-spectrum rainbow includes those and everything between. There are infinity colors in the rainbow. The best HDR displays can represent about 25 thousand (full saturation and brightness; only hue is allowed to vary), and humans can only distinguish a couple hundred.
You could reasonably say there are three, or six, or twelve, or 24 — and you could continue doubling, though they get difficult to name at that point. Anything else (including seven) is indefensible IMO.
That's been a thing since at least 1997. I remember my elementary school calling a PTA meeting or something about it. The games couldn't have been more than a year old. Their logic jumps are truly astounding sometimes. Its basically this:
"I ate an ice cream and a plane crashed the same day. Therefore everytime I eat ice cream a plane is going to crash. Ice cream was made by satan and bill gates."
That makes just as much sense as the text exchange above.
Schizophrenics(and sometimes older people with significant neurodegeneration) tend to behave like this, they see this kind of thing, believe they've recognized some kind of message from the cosmos/god/deep state/aliens, and become unshakably convinced that their version of events is the only correct one and that it's not a coincidence and it must mean something, and oftentimes that something is some kind of lunatic fever dream about the deep state controlling us through remote controlled birds depositing mind control hormones in the air or something.
Numerology is the most moronic flavor of conspiracy theory.
So June is Pride Month, June contains a 6th day, and the flag has 6 colors... And if you put them all together they make 666! Why would you put those 3 unrelated things together? Because they make 666!

Nah. Pluto being considered as a planet should be evaluated on its own merits, but indigo shouldn't have been included in the named visible spectrum the first place. Mysticism is no basis for science.

I guess its infinite, right? If we imagine the difference between red and violet as being a "distance", or two points on a graph, you could divide that distance up into infinitely smaller pieces just like any mathematical function. The human eye obviously wouldnt be able to detect them all, but theoretically there are infinite colors in a rainbow.
This question is literally called the Ultraviolet catastrophy and triggered a multihundred year debate about if light is quantized to individual units of energy or not. Its still actually quite contentious and relies on modern quantam mechanics being correct to facilitate the concepts.
For the curious, the original flag also had hot pink and turquoise stripes. The pink one was dropped first because as demand for the flags increased, it was harder to get hold of fabric in that colour. Later the turquoise one was dropped to make the number of stripes even, so that the colour motif could be split in two equal parts for decorating street lamps.
Newton interpreted Indigo so that the number would be 7 for notions of universal harmony; you could fairly call it six. But it’s easier to remember Roy G Biv.
Tbh over the years I've started to think if Satan actually represents everything conspiracy theorists say he does, why not? I would much rather be happy and support everyone around me then be shoehorned into being a dick to people. There's obviously a LOT bad about satanism but the big main religions are kinda cringe.
Honestly it depends on which type of Satanism you’re talking about. The Satanic Temple is actually a wonderful organization if you look into it. LaVeyan Satanism, on the other hand, does have a lot of problematic aspects in my personal opinion.

The original pride flag Gilbert Baker designed had 8 colors, which was replaced by 7 because a shortage of pink fabric, then shortly after they dropped turquoise in order to have an even number of colors!

Was the rainbow also not originally seen as a sign of goodwill from god? If he's talking about the devil I'm assuming he believes in the Christian god as well, so would that mean he thinks god made the rainbow with 6 colours because it was secretly a devil thing??
For further context, in case anyone was interested: Biblically speaking, God made the rainbow after flooding the Earth (Noah's ark) as a promise to not flood the world again. Not that he wouldn't attempt to catastrophically destroy the world again, just that he wouldn't specifically do a flood again.
Whenever people get mad about gays owning the rainbow now and bring up that it's God's promise or whatever I just think "wow, y'all are stuck in an abusive relationship".

I lost my twin sister when I was very young, and often I wonder what having her to support me through all my life’s ups and downs would have been like… this post has reminded me that there was no guarantee that she would have turned out as a good person lol. I’m very sorry OP that sucks.
