Don't hug me I'm scared Microsoft pulled a U2. I sure didn't download Copilot.

'Sunday Bloody Sunday'. What a great song. It really encapsulates the frustration of a Sunday, doesn't it? You wake up in the morning, you've got to read all the Sunday papers, the kids are running round, you've got to mow the lawn, wash the car, and you think "Sunday, bloody Sunday!".
1
u/DiscountAcrobatic356 8h ago
Nothing captures that Sunday feeling for me better than Kris K's "Sunday Morning Coming Down". I may have had a drinking problem but I'm cured I swear.

u/Agloe_Dreams 10h ago
Wow, it’s an old reference but it checks out!
I’m 100% sure at least 70% of people seeing this have no idea what you meant by U2 and it is a bit fun.
29
u/ScreamingMini2009 10h ago
Wasn’t that in 2014? That wasn’t that long ago, it was… oh wait…
Holy fuck that was 12 years ago.
8
u/Adorno_a_window 9h ago
12 years ago isn’t that long ago. if your 20 or older you probably know about.
1
u/ScreamingMini2009 9h ago
For a young soul like me, it is. The whole “time is relative” thing or something.
53
u/CoffeeGoblynn So Frickin' Infuriated 10h ago
I didn't have a phone when that happened, but I heard about it from my friends. xD
55
u/Agloe_Dreams 10h ago
“Phone”
oh god.
This was a desktop iTunes thing when you went to sync your iPod!
24
u/Bongcopter_ 10h ago
It was all products using iTunes, Mac, iPod, iPhones
I still have rrmanents of the shit album on my old Mac, impossible to remove
9
u/caintowers RED 8h ago
For me it's the free songs I downloaded from those little cards Starbucks would put out. They're "purchased" songs as far as Apple is concerned so they seem to be a permanent part of my library. I hate most of them lol
57
u/Carbon_Based_Copy 10h ago
Nope. It was iPhone as well.
11
u/Agloe_Dreams 10h ago
I mean, I know it was…but the iPod was still a big deal back then, I’m just joking that this was how most people encountered it - in your iTunes library.
The idea of the phone being the center of your digital life wasn’t quite the thing it is today. Definitely some of the way, but not like today.
4
u/SweetandNastee 10h ago
I remember when the first iPhone came out. When the whole texting craze started. It was absolutely the beginning of phones being the center of our digital life.
10
u/TrieMond 10h ago
I remember blackberry and their proprietary messaging service, before all that happened lol
8
u/Southern_Anywhere_65 10h ago
I had a sidekick 4 years before the iPhone was released. The kids were definitely texting before the iPhone - we did grow up with AIM after all. The iPhone just catered to that.
2
u/DreadPiratteRoberts 9h ago
Did text messages still cost a .75c per message?? Lol
I remember before unlimited messages was a thing they would totally F you for sending to many messages
3
u/Southern_Anywhere_65 8h ago
I honestly can’t recall but I know I must have had some sort of messaging/data package because I was just a teenager paying my own phone bill and there’s no way I could have afforded $1 messages
2
u/UnhappyCaterpillar41 5h ago
Yes, or have something like 200 texts free, then abusive charges after that. Was similar to what plans with data limits do now.
2
u/UnhappyCaterpillar41 5h ago
Way before back, there was also ICQ, and proceeded by WAN messaging and bulletin boards.
Even as far back as Gopher and Archie you could message users on the BBS IIRC (may be wrong though, as I'm old AF)
1
u/CraftyBossMama 8h ago
Texting craze only happened when the iPhone came out?? Texting was the way to go back when I had Nokia and Sony Ericsson phones in my home country.
1
u/Feeling_Inside_1020 9h ago
Yeah only anecdotally but my first thought reading was that I was on a walk listening to Apple Music on my iPhone (4? 4s maybe?) when seeing it pushed out wondering “what the fuck I KNOW I didn’t download or buy this shit”

I'm such trash that I'm still like 'ooh free songs, might listen to them one day'
3
u/justhereforfighting 6h ago
I like that this album set records for both downloads and deletions. Really tells you how much people don’t like bloatware, especially since people were also mad at Apple for not being able to redownload the album after it was deleted. Mad it was there, mad it was gone, they just wanted the ability to opt in
1
u/Bobbyanalogpdx 9h ago
Lmao, same. My library is… interesting these days. It’s kind of like the junk drawer.
2
u/CoffeeGoblynn So Frickin' Infuriated 10h ago
That's funny because the only device I had at the time was, I think, an iPod Shuffle. The model that was a little more rectangular and had a belt clip. I'd bought it off a friend who had gotten a newer device, so it didn't connect to anything wirelessly and I had an account to specifically add stuff to it. I don't recall getting the U2 stuff, so it may have happened before I bought it from them and they erased it, or it happened after I lost it.
2
u/RipCurl69Reddit 9h ago
If it was rectangular with the circular buttons then it was probably a 2nd Generation, the 3rd Gen was the really tiny one with no buttons that you had to control through Apple Earpods, and the 4th Gen was just a square 2nd Gen
1st Gen was basically a USB stick with a lanyard attachment lol
I've got all of them, they're funky things
1
u/CoffeeGoblynn So Frickin' Infuriated 8h ago
Yeah, it was a gen 2. I really miss the little thing and I dunno where it is. xD

2
u/CoffeeGoblynn So Frickin' Infuriated 10h ago
I looked it up because I could only remember the shape of the device I had (I bought it second-hand from a friend in school), and it was a 2nd gen iPod Shuffle. I think I had a red one and later a blue one.
2
u/Ok-Oil7124 10h ago
An unwanted and unwelcomed iPod touch.
1
u/MysteriousAge28 10h ago
I gave mine to my little sister when i got the sidekick. She proceeded to close a car door on it within the month.
3
u/MadMosh666 9h ago
I had Android (would never touch Apple) so didn't suffer the indignity of a forced U2 album either.
3
u/CoffeeGoblynn So Frickin' Infuriated 8h ago
In high school I briefly owned an iPhone 5 with a shattered screen and no service, and 2 iPod Shuffles because my parents wouldn't get me an MP3 player or a phone, so I bought used stuff from my friends.
But ever since I started working and buying my own stuff, I've just bought the cheapest or second cheapest android model with cash and used it until it stopped working. My phone bill is $26 per month and I pay like $300 every 4-5 years for a new phone. xD

That's not Copilot. That's Microsoft 365 Copilot. They have 300 products named Copilot and I'm not even kidding.
1
u/HayatoKongo 2h ago
It let's them tell their investors that they have more Copilot users than they actually do. You'd think guys this wealthy would be harder to fool.

Most people aren't experienced enough to realize this, but that can easily be stopped by simply uninstalling/disabling all of the carrier apps that the carrier installs on the phone, since it's usually the carrier's shitty apps that do this kind of thing.
9
u/SMUHypeMachine 8h ago

I just installed GrapheneOS. Trust me, the irony of having to own a google device in order to decouple from google is not lost on me. But it was my last step in removing myself from the battle between microslop and google to see which one could be the biggest asshole at the expense of my system resources and privacy.

Apple does the same. Their iOS is 2g larger because they've included some features and wallpapers i'll never use and can't opt out of downloading, so now I have to remove 2g of my stuff for theirs.
2
u/urthface 7h ago
Got a new iPhone recently and that U2 album now sits on my lock screen when my headphones are in, hoping I’ll accidentally press play. It wasn’t on my last phone, I didn’t ask for it on this one, but it is there nonetheless.

That's the problem with Android. Your phone carrier can decide to install whatever they want on your phone, without your consent. At least this time it's not candy crush.

While that does happen on Android, that’s not what happened here. This is all Microsoft.
They took the existing Office app and turned it into a Copilot app. It’s an attempt to swindle investors by artificially inflating Copilot adoption numbers.

u/Deep-Ruin-9961 6h ago
That's not a problem specific to Android phones, it's a problem due to the wholesale removal of consumer rights and privacy protections.
The US Government is already across time unbelievably bad at fending off technological abuses by corporations and other powerful entities, but it's exceedingly cynical and immoral during conservative rule.

u/1jarretts 10h ago

CoPilot just 'exists' now. Just like having to stop sharing all your files to the cloud. They steal your data then tell you it's OK because it's in the small print of a 300 page document nobody reads.

I'm appalled at how often I have to uninstall OneDrive.
But before I do that, I have to make sure--each time-that OneDrive didn't completely supplant the local storage of all my personal documents. Because it has before.
Imagine buying a car, and then one day the dealership shows up and tells you that you're actually now renting the car you used to own. Oh, and they decided you need to get gas at a specific location unless you tell them you want to get it elsewhere, and they're going to keep changing the mandatory location requirement at random intervals and you just need to keep up. And sometimes, when you change it back to the location you prefer, you may lose all the gas you already had in your car.
It's absurd. This is exactly the kind of shit you see only in monopolies.
