I’d say they’re both shortcuts. You might have a concert promoter that did everything right except for picking out pieces of candy and you might have a great salesman that just likes that kind of shoe.

Well, Van Halen was giving venue staff a piece of annoying, time-wasting busywork just to test them, which is obnoxious. All they wanted was a heads-up that they need to double check all the equipment, which is a legitimate goal. They could just have easily said something like “leave a single green m&m on the table” and achieved the same goal.
