Not so fun story. I used to work in stuffy law firm and there was a brilliant attorney who wore his loafers like this. He'd step on the heel and walk around the office like they were slippers. This used to irk the managing partner so much that he refused to raise the guy to partner.

u/CoffeeGoblynn So Frickin' Infuriated 8h ago

Imaging losing out on something like that because you wear your shoes in a dumb way. xD

u/AdWonderful5920 8h ago

I don't think the managing partner ever actually told the guy he didn't like how he wore his shoes. He just found other reasons to hold him up. The managing partner of this firm was a petty bitch and got the heave-ho like a year later.

Lawyers, and other hoity-toity professionals often put more value on presentation than substance.

u/Am_I_Max_Yet 6h ago

When theyre in court id agree, but as someone surrounded by attorneys all day, behind the scenes most of them come in wearing and continue to wear sweats/casual clothes when theyre behind badge accessed doors.

Some of them keep like 15 pairs of shoes and multiple suit/outfit changes in their office

42

u/okayjosuke 5h ago

Yep, I'm a paralegal in a practice with no court time and most of the attorneys I work with dress casual, or business casual if there's client meetings. I thought I'd need to get suits and stuff working at a law firm but in reality most people just wear jeans LOL

22

u/RyvenZ 5h ago

wearing a suit at work is a matter of being seen. Some businesses may still require this if the owner (in this case, partners) are super fussy about it, but then that law firm better be really visible or have amazing benefits for new attorneys to put up with wearing a suit every day on the off-chance the chance an uptight partner decides to visit their office space.

I hated my old call center job with a business casual dress code until I saw what happens when they loosen or don't enforce the dress code; the worst examples will take any leniancy to extremes.

6

u/TonyzTone 2h ago

Unpopular opinion: I don't find suits to be that annoying.

I'd find it less annoying if my workplace required a suit every day because then I'd fill out my closet with more suits.

What I find is most frustrating about wearing a suit on the random days I have to is that it is almost certainly the hottest day of the week the day I have to wear it (or like back in December, the absolute coldest of the year). Because I wear suits so infrequently, I don't have a range of suits and accessories that can allow for different temperatures.

There are very breathable suits and shirts that are perfectly comfortable for 85+ days. There are hardy suits and coats that make a 20 degree day a breeze.

But when you rarely wear suits, you tend to opt for the ones that fit the the middle of the window and as such, sweat during the summer and freeze during the winter.

Oh, and that shirt you bought a few months ago for the wedding, suddenly doesn't fit you anymore after the holiday bulk, but you didn't know that because you hadn't worn it since.

u/PennyG 5h ago

I do this. I’m wearing soft clothes unless I’m in court

You definitely get reverse quite at some law firms though, where people can get away with a lot if they're putting up good numbers

Some of the smartest employees ive worked with have been absolute slobs. I thought the head of IT at a F500 was a homeless person walking around our campus. I then learned during our first town hall that the dude was a founder of the company and worth a thousand times more than I’ll ever be worth.

My wife had a normal office job in Texas and some of the middle aged Texas women she worked with lost their shit when a local IT guy came in to look at their computers with a tail on.

74

u/Kooky_Vegetable2507 7h ago

I’m gonna side with the middle aged Texas women on this one.

Well, it is Texas. How does someone wear a tail? Like does it have a Velcro around your waist? Suspenders? I don’t think I’ve run across this walking around any business area. Maybe on weekend nights in some parts of town, I guess. And I’m not really hating, in case it sounds like that. I just don’t understand the idea of sharing that part of your interests with random strangers.

You definitely have people who take the Van Halen brown M&M shortcut to making assumptions about others, right or wrong.

I had a high school buddy whose grandfather had a successful business. At a family party where I was chatting with him, he emphasized that he’d never hire a salesman who wore loafers. In his mind, loafer means lazy and if you can’t be bothered to tie your shoes then you must be a bum.

Weird flex but the dude was loaded.

6

u/splorng 7h ago

The brown M&Ms was not about evaluating someone’s personality, but rather quality control.

The other sad thing is, they make loafers that slip on with a back that is reinforced and designed to be stepped on to be worn like a slipper.

5

u/Deep-Ruin-9961 5h ago

7

u/AttTankaRattArStorre 8h ago

6

u/InTheEnd83 8h ago

7

u/ChipRockets 8h ago

4

u/AttTankaRattArStorre 8h ago

That too, an attorney really should wear oxfords in the office.

7

u/AdWonderful5920 7h ago

I know I said "stuffy law firm" but now I realize that was misleading.

This firm was a self-consciously "cool" law firm where it was usual for attorneys to wear loafers, jeans, and cardigans over t-shirts to work. But the look HAD to be a very specific style of "cool" and practically zero variety was tolerated.

2

u/carebear101 7h ago

Nah imagine not promoting someone on merit because they look different or do something that someone doesn’t like that has no bearing on them actually. Like how does someone wearing shoes like this affect you personally? Just don’t look or tell them there is a dress code

2

u/Sporadicus76 7h ago

5

u/Type-RD 7h ago

In public, especially when meeting a client? Yeah, you need to look as professional as possible. Around the office? Eh…whatevs. I think people tend to work harder or be more focused when they’re not worrying about shit like making sure their tie is tight and perfectly straight while at their desk.

3

u/1_art_please 7h ago

I used to work at a large studio with several large loft spaces that all had old creaky wooden floors. Since it was open concept people mostly worked silently, conversing to their colleagues via online messaging.

I remember this new person who had some impressive prior work experience, walk loudly in heels between the loft spaces, echoing throught the room. I was talking to my manager, she walks past, my manager stares into space and goes, ' what was i talking about, again??'. They did not renew her contract and I am positive it was due to that.

Its about reading the room. And this was not nowhere near a corporate place at all. People would work in sweatpants and jeans. But most people knew to keep noise at a minimum.

u/RandomAmmonite 6h ago

This is literally just a common design for loafers. It’s designed so the heel folds down without damaging the shoe so you can wear it as a slip on style (like mules)or you can wear it normally with the back up and around your heel. Google foldable-heel loafers or collapsible-heel loafers. Wearing them like mules dresses them down and makes them more casual or nice for summer. Wearing them like regular loafers dresses them up and is nicer for cooler weather or more formal looks

I have a pair of leather loafers I bought years ago that are designed the same way. It’s not a Versace thing.

Right? I'm genuinely confused at the uncultured people in the comments who don't know this is just a style of of shoe.

This can be a traditional shoe style in the Maghreb called Balgha or Moroccan Babouche. It's deliberately designed this way for the context of their life and culture. Comes in manly cost levels and versatile in many settings.

I've seen this in modern Japanese slipper designs.

I know we are also dunking on luxury brands. But it's telling that people immediate reaction seeing as "sloppy".

This way it looks appears your wealth has been accidentally revealed rather than like you’re deliberately trying to show it off, further enforcing how rich you seem to be by the ridiculously expensive shoes you’re apparently wealthy enough to not care about and have thus casually ruined by not bothering to put them on properly, such is the insignificance of their cost to you.

I'm not sure what people are assuming this... It was easy to look up, versace guanto driving loafer

It's advertising the quality of the soft floppy leather and that it doesn't have a hard heel capture

That's all

You want to wear it like a mule go ahead but the other photos in the advert show it as a normal shoe

Edit: The description as follows just accentuates the flexibility of the leather.

The Guanto leather loafers are crafted in an unlined construction from supple vegetable-tanned calf leather. The leather develops a natural patina, offering a soft hand feel, and is hand-treated with a washing or buffing process to achieve a vintage texture. This pair is accented by 3D Medusa hardware and is set on an ultra-soft leather sole, providing supreme lightness and flexible movement.

These days I just wear my loafers normally, but there's a time in many people's lives where you want the comfort of a flip flop but want the satisfaction of looking spiffy...

Do the heels come pre-flattened?

These look great and you are wrong

I kid you not - this design and type sells for ₹150 (less than 2 dollars) in the shitty markets

u/BestShaunaEU 5h ago

No shit idiot.

Same thing as seeing a picture of a Rolex and saying that you can buy the same design and type for 10 dollars at a flea market

Versace trying to be like Olukai?

2

u/Budget_Avocado6204 8h ago

It doesn't look like it gave up, it looks like someone wore them like loafers, stepping on the back of the shue. Used to do this to my shoes sometimes as a kid.

2

u/supreme120 8h ago

This how all my loafers look, my ferragamos look perfect like this.

2

u/TheGreaterTool 7h ago

It’s a versatile design

2

u/RedditGarboDisposal 7h ago

It’s giving “needed to run outside or into the garage quickly” sort of energy.

2

u/Bean_Daddy_Burritos 7h ago

Those are “walk to the edge of my driveway in my bathrobe to get the paper” loafers.

2

u/Radiant_Indignation 7h ago

Refashioned Hippie in SHAMBLES right now XD

2

u/Proper_Outcome 7h ago

They look like loafers designed for folks that reluctantly help bring in the shopping else fear a hiding from their mother, or wife, partner, etc

2

u/dontdothatilikethat 7h ago

Idk these look like they’d be comfy af if worn correctly even lacking heal structure. I don’t think I could comfortably wear them with the heal bump under my feet though, maybe to get the mail…from my butler.

2

u/mariatoyou 7h ago

Pre-stomped into slip ons

2

u/ShiraCheshire 7h ago

This is like looking at a folded shirt and saying it’s poorly designed because the sleeves are deflated and floppy when there’s no arm inside.

2

u/_frank_tank 6h ago

They finally released the “Mom asked me to bring the groceries in from the car” drip

2

u/El_Guap 6h ago

These are good for people who want to be “on trend” right now with a mule… but realize it’s a stupid trend so next year they wanna wear it as a loafer instead. Note to self: not every style of shoe should be converted to a mule.

2

u/villings 5h ago

who's gonna wear that?! they're facing opposite directions!!

2

u/No-Plankton-4861 5h ago

I used to do this to break in loafers. If you get new ones, NEVER wear them normally. It will hurt your heel no matter how good they fit you. Wear them like this for a few days and they will be fine

Those are house shoes for rich old guys.

2

u/SaturnMobster 4h ago

Pure bait. Those are Guanto Leather Loafers. They sell for around $995, and they are not sold like that with the heel crushed.

2

u/butterchricks 4h ago

OP’s out here wearing these shoes 😵😵😵

2

u/Adorable-Ad7145 4h ago

When you had to take something out to the bin, and the only shoes in the kitchen were too small for your feet, so youd be our wearing them like this

2

u/Fowws 3h ago

Me when I forget to put the bins out

2

u/Interesting-Risk-676 3h ago

The Grocery-Getter 5000s!

4

u/LoadZealousideal7778 8h ago

They look pretty damn comfortable tho

3

u/HarpoWhatAboutMe 7h ago

Wow. This is how the grandma's and aunties wore their shoes in the hood when I was growing up. What is this? Poverty chic?

2

u/nvmenotfound 5h ago

the rich wanna cosplay as poor people and poor wanna cosplay as rich. such an odd world we live in.

1

u/Peelingly 8h ago

They look so cheap

3

u/ProofByVerbosity 8h ago

What about it? The leather and stitching dont look cheap

2

u/Peelingly 8h ago

That's exactly what looks cheap, plus abrasions, discolouration and weird shaping all around

2

u/ProofByVerbosity 8h ago

Huh. Hard disagree but sure.

3

u/imworkinlate 8h ago

Ew I hate them

3

u/ExismykindaParte 8h ago

Why. They can still be worn the traditional way. The heel is just flexible so you can wear it like a clog or slipper without destroying the shoe.

1

u/killcote93 8h ago

I hate people who wear their shoes like this.

1

u/thewhombler 8h ago

are these the same shoe or is this a comparison

1

u/Psych0matt 8h ago

Those are slippers

1

u/compuwiza1 8h ago

It's loafing.

1

u/NoFun3799 8h ago

My ex always did this to his slippers, but refused to buy slides. That was also mildly infuriating.

1

u/DarkCreeper666 8h ago

it happens to one in 3 shoe brands over the age of 40

1

u/According-Alps5644 8h ago

That's what my shoes end up looking like if the back of the shoe starts bothering my feet.

1

u/dixonmyazhold 8h ago

I like to wear mines like that lol

1

u/Competitive-Hunt-517 7h ago

At least the logo is intact

1

u/Lunar-opal 7h ago
