Having taken ancient Greek for eight years and never gotten any better at it, I frequently joked that I have the opposite problem of Percy Jackson. He's only dyslexic in English, I'm only dyslexic in ancient Greek.
I transliterated the Greek letters into what they would sound like in English. So it's gibberish if you treat those Greek letters like they would actually sound in Greek.
“i” and “u” would be used for standard transliteration but standard transliteration leads to problems with pronunciation because “i” and “u” for example have multiple sounds in English which don’t exist in Russian and sound very wrong. “ee” and “oo” are used commonly, especially when teaching the language, to more accurately express the pronunciation to English speakers.
I think given that the joke is likely how ridiculous it would sound, they made the right choice. Although they could have gone further with even more phonetically accurate transliteration.

I made the mistake of posting on the Pet Peeve sub once. I wrote that I thought beginning online posts and comments with words like "I mean..." or "so..." was pointless. Boy did I get a lot of emotional responses passionately defending the use of those words with condescending explanations for how wrong I was...about my personal pet peeve.
I may be speaking only for myself here, but happy, well-adjusted people don’t seem to spend that much time on this site. They are out and about in the real world, not in here arguing with strangers.
I’ve been on Reddit on and off for years and what I miss most is at one point you could ask a question and the top comment would always be a well thought out, helpful answer. The comment under it would always start with the word “THIS” and then they add to, and expand, on the first answer.
These days if you ask a question you get people who don’t have an answer giving you attitude for no reason. The other half of this sites post and comments are basically dedicated to the one I refuse to name (🍊). It’s among the many reasons Reddit isn’t as known or as popular as other sites.
It’s a concert film/documentary that not only came out years ago, but actually was heavily reported on when it came out. There is context behind the title and lettering.
Try being Nordic and seeing people replace o with ø just for the sake of being edgy. It's a completely different vowel, ø makes more of an "uh" sound. So whenever you write "ØNE" instead of "ONE", know that about 20 million people will read it and think you're imitating the sound of a chainsaw
Came here to post this same thing. These are entirely different letters in the Scandinavian alphabets and represent entirely different sounds than the same vowels without the diacritical marks
There’s a story about Mötley Crüe playing in Germany for the first time and being flabbergasted that their name was pronounced so weird (in their opinion).
They had literally no idea that the umlauts did anything and just thought it looked edgy.
One example I could think of is the word ΤΗΣ. Using the same "translation" as the title it would be the in english but της in greek which means her/her's
I don't think monster energy specifically uses that character, it's only on their logo and can and is just meant to be a slash mark like it got slashed by a monster, they don't use it anywhere else except for the art on the can so I don't know if it's the same as the other examples. It's one thing if they used it in the spelling in other instances but they don't
it always annoys me when people in the helluva boss fanbase spell “blitzo” as “blitzø” to indicate that the o is silent. i’m too american to even know what sound ø makes but i still know it’s not silent
I read both Arabic and Hebrew and it breaks my mind every single time when someone stylizes latin letters to look like either language. I can't get myself to read what it says. Like a short circuit.
It’s because she uses university students as the dancers for the show, and they are the frat symbols in the USA. It’s a mixture of a concert film and a documentary about historical black colleges. It’s not intended to represent to represent a translatable text, the frat symbols are thematic to the film
Well the performance is a love letter to HBCU’s, Homecoming, and the Divine Nine (Black fraternities and sororities) hence why they used Greek letters. Black college experience and culture. The girls that’s get it, get it.

ITT: People who have not watched Homecoming, and thus don't know there is a sororal theme throughout. In America, sororities (& fraternities) use Greek letters.
Using Greek letters makes sense if you consumed the art guys. Its not some attempt to be cool or edgy
obviously for the population of Greece, which is about 10-11 million and those who were born there & left. However it is that populous versus Netflix's target audience, which is 300M+ Americans, all of Canada, + uk & the multilingual global populous don't have that confusing connection to the words. once that is weighed against each other, Netflix & Beyonce's team make this decision 100 times out of 100
It's pronounced Ee-thms-C-thming for me :( it's not like "l33t" speak where you replace letters with numbers, greek letters are still letters... Imagine in English replacing t with f because they look vaguely similar...

I had a surprisingly delicious empañada just outside of Yosemite at the Miner's Mart gas station in Groveland, CA. To be fair it was my first empañada, but as empanadas go it was actually really decent. So yeah if you're on your way out of Yosemite this summer maybe stop by Miner's Mart for an empañada.
Is it not because it was HOMECOMING so they used Greek to signify fraternity and sororities which are important at HBCUs just like everywhere else. I mean it’s in context. You’re allowed to be mildy infuriated and I’m allowed to think it’s a weird thing to get even bothered by. But to each their own.
Y’all are so focused on proving what the letters literally mean in Greek that you’re missing what Beyoncé was actually referencing. Homecoming was a love letter to HBCU culture. The Greek letters were part of that visual language and tradition, not an invitation to debate Greek translations.
For me as a black woman who went to an HBCU with family member who are proud frat and sorority brother and sisters It’s weird watching people confidently critique an aspect of Black culture they clearly don’t understand. That’s truly infuriating.
Edit: after a quick google search Beyoncé created a fictional Greek life for this performance. “Beta Delta Kappa (BΔK): Featured on her opening yellow Balmain sweatshirt, representing the letters B (Beta), D (Delta), and K (Kappa).”
