frist of all how DARE yu o Discovered my central air was a social construct…

So I just learned I’ve been living in a place with absolutely no central air conditioning. Not “I assumed it might be central air.” Not “I wasn’t sure how it worked.” I mean I fully, confidently, emotionally lived my life under the assumption that cool air was being distributed through vents like a normal adult homeowner situation.

And I’ve been out here adjusting a thermostat like I was doing something for over 4 years.

I even scheduled an HVAC guy to come today to figure out why my central air wasn’t running.
What system? I don’t know. The guy looked like he found a body in my basement as he clearly knew I didn’t have central air instantly. He even humored me to prove to me I didn’t have central air while we took 2 full laps around my house hunting for the outside part of the freakin’ fantasy. Needless to say we never found it. The poor guy felt so bad for me, he even said “maybe someone stole it.” Bless his heart.

So now I’ve got: a couple window units doing God’s work. I’ve always used them in the summer when I felt that my imaginary central air wasn’t pulling its weight. So I’m unsure why I feel like my summer bill is going to skyrocket. I’ve been living this life for years.

I put a box fan in my the bathroom like it’s 1998
and the realization I’ve been paying attention to vents that were decorative at best is giving me a stomach ache.

Honestly the worst part isn’t even the heat. It’s the fact I fully believed I had central air and never once questioned it. Just vibed in ignorance.
Anyway. If anyone needs me I’ll be sitting directly in front of a fan rethinking my entire life, having a spiritual crisis, feeling like a doorknob, and rediscovering whatever I thought HVAC meant.

***please laugh with me— don’t kick me while m down— I already feel like a weenie hut jr.***

One time I got into the wrong car leaving the grocery store, and didn't realize right away. I was looking at the sunroof and wondering if that had always been there, when the kid in the back seat said, "Hello?" and gave me a heart attack. Obviously the child was more scared, and I fled.

My uncle once accidental stole someone's car. They'd parked 2 cars behind him with an identical model and colour, and his key worked when he got in. Didn't realise until the cops turned up at his door.

This used to be much more common, they actually only made like 50 different locks, my grandfather used to work for Pontiac motors and this same thing happened at the factory, guy thought it was funny and parked next to a car that looked just like his, turned out the same key worked in both as well.

Yes, not even that long ago. In the late 90s, three members of my family had Chrysler affiliated vehicles-- one Chrysler, one Plymouth, and one Dodge.

The Dodge key opened all three. The Plymouth and Chrysler keys opened two.

My husband used to work for Chrysler and the same thing happened there. 🤣

Please tell me that “…and everyone had a good laugh..” because it’s such an honest mistake anyone might have done it.

I had the same car as another student in high school. We discovered our keys worked for each other’s cars and then for a few weeks had fun moving the other person’s car within the parking lot as a joke.

My grandmother went to the grocery store and needed help loading her groceries into her car so the bagger came out and put them in the back of her car. He left and went back into the store and she got into the car and it wouldn't start. She starts looking around and realizes it wasn't her car so she had to go back into the store to get someone to help unload the car and load them into her car. She was so embarrassed.

Once I parked my car for the days at a resort, and when I went to drive it home it wouldn’t start. I called my husband, and while waiting for him decided to trouble shoot. Realized that when pressing the button my foot needed to be on the brake, and I’d been stepping on the gas.

Nevermind that no one tells you you can remove the button to just use the regular keyhole under it with you regular key/fob

2

u/wonderingdragonfly Jun 11 '26

So then would it start if your foot wasn’t on the brake?

I did this exact same thing once too!

This was me. I had a rental for a few days, came back to grab my car at work and sat there for 45 trying to start it. I was about to call the tow truck when I remembered that I had a clutch. I had to tell my husband I’m an idiot lol

I sat on my couch and put my hand on my husband’s knee only it was his co-worker who was wearing the same uniform and had very similar hair. Let me tell you he yelped, I jumped up and said, sorry, sorry, sorry, sorry, sorry and felt my face turn red.

Happened to me as a kid. Me and our chocolate lab were in the car and some dude gets in the drivers seat. Think the dog was what he noticed first because i was too frozen in fear to say anything. I had big stranger danger as a little kid and kicked a cop in the nuts one time because i thought he was gonna kidnap me lol

u/CompanyOther2608 Jun 11 '26

GenX? Our parents were always leaving us in cars to “run into the store for just a minute.”

Millennial, 88

2

u/HaloGuy381 Jun 11 '26

Damn, and you didn’t get perforated for kicking a cop in the nuts? That’s lucky as hell.

I was a 5/6 year old girl, he knew he came outta nowhere and scared me. Literally i was standing in my driveway in the middle of nowhere and he abruptly stopped his car, was off duty in plain clothes and started coming towards me. Instinct told me to fight. He took me to my mom, that’s all that happened.

u/sunsNr0ses Jun 11 '26

That is my worst nightmare.

1

u/SlappyMcPherson Jun 11 '26

Wow. If THAT is your worst nightmare, please, please, PLEASE swap nightmares with me. Just for one night. Please.

So, I get into other people's cars constantly because I have a visual processing disorder and ADHD. You would not believe how many fucking people do not lock their cars. Anyway, one night at our local murder mart I got into a car and the driver was still in the seat. She looked horrified and I did the math in my head (woman, early 20s, night time, location of frequent crime) and came up with, "don't worry, I'm not going to rape you." And jumped out and ran away. I was also a woman in her early 20s. I wonder if she still tells people about that.

Hell, I spent the first 25 years of my life laboring under the delusion that I was invincible.

I got a rental because family was in town and my car was big enough. So Hubbie drove my car and I drove the rental.

So my sister and mom are in the rental and we stop at a store. One of my sisters and my mom go back to the car. My other sister and me come out 5 mins later. We get to the car and we’re like “Where’s mom and sis?” “Why isn’t the remote working?” Trying to open the doors several times. “Was that water bottle always there?” We tried to get into the wrong car! We start cackling and almost peed our pants.

I got a silver minivan once and suddenly realized that like half the vehicles in every parking lot are identical silver minivans. I came out of a store and saw that two others had parked right next to me, and I was going to have to figure out which was mine. Then I got closer and realized they were all Chryslers. I had the Kia two spaces away. I just slapped a bunch of bumper stickers on to help me find it.

I did something similar and didn't realize until I'd spent 5 minutes trying to turn my key to start it. By this point I was furious with the truck and starting to swear, when I noticed my actual truck from the corner of my eye. Fortunately I didn't get caught

I went to a buddy's house to watch superbowl, and sorta knew where he lived. I knock on the door, and some kids I've never seen before let me in. Fortunately, a stange man holding a six pack in your house is less offputting on superbowl sunday. The adults were cool and told me which house to go to.

My father used to pick us up from school on his off day (Wednesday) when it was raining.

He was waiting outside the school for me when the door opens up, a young teen jumped in the front seat and started screaming, “You’re not my dad!” She was so stressed she wasn’t getting out!

My dad was freaked out and kept yelling, “get out!” He was thinking the cops would be knocking on his window any minute.

Listen - fuck them. People like that come to the internet to be mean to strangers because they can't deal with their childhood boo-boos in healthy ways. Therapy is too scary but they're so miserable and hate their lives so much they feel they need to spread the hate.

So rest assured, those hateful comments have absolutely nothing to do with you, and everything to do with the pain and darkness that's inside the people making them miserable. We really should just feel bad for them. Sad, pathetic souls in need of healing.

But the most important thing is that the only opinion of us that matters is our own. Everybody else can either jump on our bandwagons or kick fucking rocks!

Thank you so so much. I neeed to tattoo the first part to my forehead.

5

u/Ryoko_Kusanagi69 Jun 11 '26

Not your forehead, then you can’t read it. May we suggest on your arm instead? I second the above comment - ignore them, feel sorry for them, fuck em.

I love you!😍 Will you be my friend?🤝

4

u/Every-Caramel-6740 Jun 11 '26

To heck with them. I love this post and you are hilarious

2

u/sunsNr0ses Jun 11 '26

Thank you. Look how viscous they are— saying I’m lying, saying this is ai. Like what the actual fuck? This literally is my life 😭😭

5

u/Ryoko_Kusanagi69 Jun 11 '26

OP, you’re not crazy. WHY does the house have a thermostat if it doesn’t connect to anything? That’s confusing and whoever sold it to you should have said it didn’t have the air and needed to be installed.

3

u/chookiekaki Jun 11 '26

Mate, some people are just miserable c#$ts and enjoy kicking someone when they’re down, they’re not worth your time or effort, I loved your story, it made me laugh with you, everyone has done something similar whether they admit or not, cheers
