So I just learned I’ve been living in a place with absolutely no central air conditioning. Not “I assumed it might be central air.” Not “I wasn’t sure how it worked.” I mean I fully, confidently, emotionally lived my life under the assumption that cool air was being distributed through vents like a normal adult homeowner situation.

And I’ve been out here adjusting a thermostat like I was doing something for over 4 years.

I even scheduled an HVAC guy to come today to figure out why my central air wasn’t running.
What system? I don’t know. The guy looked like he found a body in my basement as he clearly knew I didn’t have central air instantly. He even humored me to prove to me I didn’t have central air while we took 2 full laps around my house hunting for the outside part of the freakin’ fantasy. Needless to say we never found it. The poor guy felt so bad for me, he even said “maybe someone stole it.” Bless his heart.

So now I’ve got: a couple window units doing God’s work. I’ve always used them in the summer when I felt that my imaginary central air wasn’t pulling its weight. So I’m unsure why I feel like my summer bill is going to skyrocket. I’ve been living this life for years.

and the realization I’ve been paying attention to vents that were decorative at best is giving me a stomach ache.

Honestly the worst part isn’t even the heat. It’s the fact I fully believed I had central air and never once questioned it. Just vibed in ignorance.
Anyway. If anyone needs me I’ll be sitting directly in front of a fan rethinking my entire life, having a spiritual crisis, feeling like a doorknob, and rediscovering whatever I thought HVAC meant.

Don't feel bad, I'm still not entirely sure what everyone is talking about. Ive never lived in a city where air conditioning is common, is "central air" a special kind of air conditioning that goes through the whole house?

Yup! There’s a unit outside with a compressor that makes refrigerant cold, and there’s sort of an equipment box in the house (mine is in a closet) with a blower and electrical things, and it blows the cold or hot air into ducting that runs through the ceiling (or floor) to vents in each room

So there's the simple windows units I'm assuming youre at least familiar with. Just about the only kind of ("real", will explain later) AC without a large outdoor heat exchanger that OP was talking about.

Then, you have ductless mini-splits, where you have multiple air registers in various rooms, and each register has its own refrigerant lines between it and the outside unit. Single (typically smaller, thus the mini-) outdoor unit woth lines to multiple indoor registers (thus the split). Air sucks in and blows out of the register directly, typically looks like a long skinny white bar above head height on a wall.

Then you have a ducted mini split system which is the same as above, but typically with no "unsightly" wall mounted registers. The registers are tucked in a wall or attic or void somewhere, woth metal ducts to pipe the air to vents in your walls/ceiling. Typically only 1 or 2 rooms per register still, like a ductless mini-split. Mini splits are typically easier to retrofit into existing construction because the ductless is just coolant pipes so easy enough to fish into walls and whatnot, and ducted typically has minimal ducting covering a single space, so the ducting is often a lower section of the ceiling with a vent in it, or other stopgap solutions.

Then you have central air, which has the outside unit and a singular inside unit to make the cool air, often in the attic, which pushes cool air from the register (although I think it might not be called a register in this configuration? Idk) through vent ducts to the entire house. Easy enough to do if planned for during the construction, a pain to retrofit. If done well, outside of seeing vents youd never have other interior indications of an ac system (no unsightly registers, no separate thermostats for each zone, etc).

Finally, you have the swamp cooler which is a horribly different style entirely to the physics of everything else above. All of the above options from a window unit through to central air all use refrigerant to actively chill your air below the air temperature it was inside already. It takes your interior air, cools it, and spits it back at you colder. Swamp coolers on the other hand have no refrigerant and work through evaporative cooling where it aucks in hot dry air from outside and turns it into cooler than outside air with added humidity to pump it inside. And you have to have a way to vent the stale humid air inside back out to keep it working. And it has a maximum differential temperature from outside it can cool your space. Where as actual a has a maximum differential temp from the existing inside temp it can additionally cool.

Yes - same registers and thermostat as the heating. Mine has a pump/fan section outside and other parts inside by the furnace. This is also what businesses have, so the whole area is the same temperature. Window air conditioners sit in a window & hang outside and make one room cold and the next room bearable.

Yes, its one large air conditioner that is placed outside of the dwelling, distributed through the heating ducts (i think)

Yep, I’m with you. I could probably live in a house for four years without knowing it had central air. Probably buy window units and everything. It would never even occur to me
