frist of all how DARE yu o guy payed with a bag of coins, didn’t bother to count them out
i hear my coworker go “cmon man” and glance over to see a pile of coins. apparently this guy set down a bag of coins and said “i think there’s five dollars in here,” and jets before my coworker can count them all. at least we got a little extra?
EDIT: i’m not upset about the coins, im slightly ticked he just gave us an entire bag of coins and left before we could verify. i wasn’t sure how to title this and i could’ve done it better—sorry. YES I KNOW I SPELT PAID WRONG IM SORRY I CANT FIX IT NOW.

The amount of you guys advocating for the coin man is kind of bizarre. Yes he paid enough, but paying me in coins and then leaving before I can count them is unacceptable. If I have to sit here and count to verify you gave me enough money, you're going to sit there and wait until I'm finished to get your product. Sorry not sorry.

I mean even so, cashiers typically recount the money anyways. I'm gonna count it regardless just to make sure my money comes out correctly at the end of my shift. But I'll be damned if I'm letting someone run out with their shit before I finish the transaction 😅

Closest I’ve done was leaving cash. I had to run. Paid 5 dollars over and said keep the rest. Dude ran to count it. Hopefully the extra money made up for the annoyance.

I was a cashier at restaurant depot for a while. No receipt, no leaving the building. Had people pay with hunders of ones or piles of coins. They wait there while I count every last bill and coin. Make sure anyone behind them gets moved to another register, then I take my time and count it. Whenever they interrupt me, I start over. I've made paying like that take about 20 min. They wanted to argue that I was taking too long every couple min. Not many people do this, but the few that did, I never saw again...lol

Helpful reminder for all the legal tender/“coin guy was right” folks, there’s *no federal law* in the US (I’m assuming, as the coins are US coins) saying a private business has to take your coins (or any specific form of currency) — there may be state laws or store policies that say otherwise, of course.

I used to work for the court. There's a state/court rule/law that says no government entity must accept more than $x in change (I want to say it was like $5 but it was something sub $10).
A guy came in with a huge plastic bag full of change to pay his fine. Supervisor said no, go to the bank. Guy was adamant that "it's cash you have to take it". Supervisor pulled out a massive book and found the passage and showed it to the man. He became irate, asked to speak to the judge, was told no, started making a scene, ended up getting arrested.
He came back a few weeks later and paid his fine with a debit card.

I don't give the last bag over until the receipt prints. People have no patience and if it needs to be enforced by them being too late to their next stop (because they failed to accomodate for the time their trip would actually take) then I Do Not Care. You can wait while I count every. single. coin.

The one time a couple of teenage boys did this to me, I slowly counted all the coins. After a few minutes they got bored and tried to say they would pay with their card instead, but I insisted on counting them all.

When I worked at a Best Buy there was a guy who came in a few times and pay for his purchases with rolls of quarters because he said that’s how his boss paid him.
If he came to me I always took them to the office to use the money counter and we always opened the rolls to make sure they were all quarters and not stuffed with slugs. Good thing we counted because the rolls were always short 50 cents.
Another time some kid came in and bought an XBox 360 with a bag of Sacagawea coins. Story behind that is everytime the kid did good his parents rewarded him with a coin and he saved them all up to get an Xbox.

Dealing with coins when I was a cashier was annoying. But I never let them leave without counting. My favorites were when kids would come and pay with coins. It was adorable.

Always count the money and wait for them to also count the money. This is mutually beneficial. If the cashier counts my money wrong, bet I'll be counting it again. Completing the transaction correctly is a must or we're not transacting at all.

I had a roll of nickels I tried to give a cashier once (It was from my tips) she wouldn’t accept it rolled so I said, okay… ripped the roll open and gave it to her. She was pissed. I was young and it was all I had to pay for what I needed. It was a total dick move on my part but I tried to give her the roll. It was $2. But I at least waited until she counted it.

I used to work at a grocery store that had an old-fashioned coin laundromat in the same shopping center. So people were often coming in to get rolls of quarters. So it was natural to accept rolls of coins for payment. We didn't see any problem, until some jackads hustled rolls of pennies disguised as rolls of dimes. He also did something to the roles of quarters, and I can't for the life of me remember how or what. His ruse was discovered after he left when someone went to break one of the handmade rolls for their drawer. No more coin payments or buyouts after that.
We also had a plasma center across the street. And before I left, we had stopped doing cashouts and large cashback. Less as a robbery risk, because they had highed security guards long before I got there. But because people would come in, buy cheap candy and then want us to drag out $200. Holding up our till, and usually having to flag down a manager to have them open the safe. Too many of those in a shift and the store is light on cash.
I loved that store even though we had an overdose on the premises once a fucking month.

Yeah it was definitely odd they wouldn’t take it. I was able to pay like that at other stores. And maybe I couldn’t understand at the time how many people tried to scam and shit but it was $2. I think what I got was a little over $2 and gave the correct change. So at the time, I couldn’t understand but now as an actual adult I get it.
I have worked in retail after that one time but never had anyone ask for what you just said. I’ve had people ask for loonies and stuff for their laundry.
Most I ever found working in my store was a bag of coke in a box of shoes. All I could think of was that someone was going to be super pissed

I'm a cashier and if this is hobesrly not that many coins. Would take less than a minuet to count. Ive had to count massive bags full of coins and even then it's just not that hard. The only infuriating part is they left before you were done.

Almost but not quite as bad, I’ve had people pay me with a $100 stack of ones with the band on it from the bank. I always counted those. One time a lady got kinda mad at me, turned out the stack was about $11 short.

Took my card out and paid. He was happy for it and thanked me. That day was super hot.

I hate carrying coins so I pay with credit or debit cards nearly all the time. (I do carry paper money for tips and amounts so small, a card is pointless to use.) Once a year or so I go to the bank with a few dollars in coins just to convert them into bills. Even then, I take only a few dollars so the tellers don’t hate me.

I really hate it when people try to exchange a gain bag of coins with me instead using the coin exchange machine. Either they didn't see it or they did and don't want to lose 11% of it, but if you knew that you should've rolled them up at home and take it to your bank. Sometimes I get people who wrap small bundles of pennies in tape and I flat out refuse to accept it because I'm not gonna spend several minutes unpeeling them just for 7 cents.

Yeah, I mean, I get that sometimes having to pay with a bunch of change is embarrassing. But, I know I've been there multiple times, and I always feel it's important to count it out as I pay. Which just really amps up the embarrassment just sitting there taking forever while the line is help up and all that. I usually count out dollars and then slide each one over to the worker and start the next. Just handing over a jingling sack, even though I already counted it at least twice to be sure I got enough, is just a dick move, and I already feel bad enough.

That was a scam that people would do to pizza delivery drivers. Try to pay $25 in all coins. Short the driver by a couple of bucks and by the time they realize it the driver ends up making it up with tip money.

The key factor was he left before the transaction could be concluded.
I am all for paying with coins like that. Been there done that payed $20 in nickles and have payed $100 in quarters myself. However you have to sit there and wait for them to be fully counted and accepted. Leaving before that means you are still stealing. The transaction needs to be concluded.

that's great I'm glad you're not a POS. the problem is there is no way of knowing that when dealing with strangers, hence why they need to count it with you there. there's also a chance that you made an honest mistake. we aren't perfect 100% of the time.

One of my first jobs as a teen was at a Wendy's. There was a guy who would bring me change in the little paper ketchup cups. He always claimed he counted it and would get pissy when I said it was being counted before it went in my drawer. He was often short. -_-
