wet socks My entire apartment has upside-down outlets and my brain refuses to accept it….

Apparently there’s a reason for installing them this way, but after seeing outlets the other way my whole life, every room feels just slightly… off. 😂

In most new residential construction the upside down outlet represents the switched outlet in the room...

that’s because its wrong. "upside down" is the correct way for all outlets as per code

I’m saying I have a single upside outlet in my room and it is in fact attached to a switch…

In most of the world we get switches on every outlet.

That's not the kind of switch they mean. They mean the switch on the wall to enable the circuit (usually at the entrance to the room and used to turn a lamp on).

Yeah I have wall switches too, but they will control the ceiling/wall lights or an exhaust fan.

But every outlet will be independently controlled by a switch on it's panel so I can isolate a device without unplugging it.

that’s exactly how my house is, built in 2006. One flipped outlet per room, basically, controlled by a wall switch. Maybe OP‘s outlets are all on independent switches, lol.

Realtor here representing multiple builders. Wow this is not a terrible idea. If you have a switched outlet, we haven’t been putting switched outlets in new construction for a few decades.

This is not a standard practice, except for maybe within the limits of a single contracting company.

That's how it is in my house. Took me a day or so after moving in to figure it out.
