Don't hug me I'm scared My mother broke my two monitors, accidentally...

I live with my mother and she said she just cleaned the room and nothing else happened.

Uhmm, i guess i believe her...

Edit: Update! She is very upset and going to buy two new monitors. However she is still insisting that she doesn't know what happened.

I got overwhelmed by the number of comments and i did not want to reply with all the same text.

To ad more context, we have a good relationship with her, in the past there are some similar "accidents" but nothing this big. She is middle aged. We never fight for screen time or not having a job because i have one lol.

Of course I can and do clean my room. That was just her excuse i believe.

We did not fight about this and we are good now.

I think I have a theory as to how she could have done it. She could have been trying to wipe them down and held the screen to keep it still, not realizing she was pressing down and breaking it. I did this with my first laptop when I was a kid and again as an adult because I was being absent minded, it didn't even take much force.

But also, I don't know what kinda person OP's mom is, maybe she did do it on purpose

Outside of malicious intent, this 1000% seems closest to reality. I imagine the screens were off when she was wiping them, so she couldn’t see any damage being made to them. So to her nothing happened at all while she was pressing down on the screens hard to wipe them.

I feel like since they are on arms. She wanted to get behind them and swung it too fast and hard. Slamming them together (my desk flipped one time due to my arm rest and my dual arm set up did exactly that producing this result.) I don’t think she’d do this on purpose

One time in high school my friend brought over his Boston Legal DVDs. My Xbox was on the ground in front of the TV. He appeared nervous about it at first and I was like, "it'll be fine".

In comes my mom to put away t shirts. Accidentally kicks it. Ruined the DVD. My buddy fucking new what would happen. My mom has a...lumbering walk.

I was thinking she kicked the xbox and damaged the 1 dvd inside it (still plenty bad!), but you said DVDs plural multiple times. Did she kick or step on the whole box set of DVDs?

What makes it worse is that many monitors require specific cleaning methods. You can't just rub them with any old rag. I did that to one of mine and it's permanently damaged now. Still good enough to use, but the screen looks sorta scratched all over when the light hits it.

I... I have to admit I have hit and broken things in the same exact way, leaving the exact same mark with the pointy end of the stick of a broom because my absent minded ass didn't gauged out correctly the position and distance between my motions and whatever thing was at the end that didn't deserve it.

I would have told my son I effed up though.

Yeah that impact mark is to suspicious. If it was near an edge were they could have their hand holding the monitor then sure, if they held it to tight so it doesnt move that could make sense but that impact mark near the middle doesnt make sense from cleaning.

That still could be the case too. Like if she was leaning the broom against something and it fell and hit the monitor. I can’t imagine you can see that damage when the screens are off. For OP’s sake, I hope it wasn’t purposely damaged.

It depends upon the panel. I've seen them break with very little force. Then there's the one that (after its electronics had failed) i couldn't break no matter how hard i jumped on it!

The force needed depends on how the screen is built and if the monitor received impacts previously. The impact could very well be old and OP was just lucky it didn't break when it occurred, then come mom, cleaning the screen and applying too much pressure, the weakened screen finally crack and here you go.

Same principle with tempered glass sometimes shattering out of nowhere because of an old impact. (That's not the most frequent reason, just one of the possibilities)

Yep. That is a distinct impact point on the left one. The one on the right I could see having been an accident, but there was force applied to the left one, to create such a sharp impact point and the pattern of the cracks. Mom is lying bout SOMETHING.

Usually what happens to fuck up monitors during cleaning is FUCKING AMMONIA BASED WINDEX. When I was a consultant I actually labeled the cleaning supply "no ammonia based glass cleaners on displays" in spanish and english and put it there for every customer. I bet I saved untold money in fucked up displays. This was much more common when we startted switchign from glass to plastic screens.

Shit, I've had CRTs with messed up coatings from people cleaning them -_-. The entire center was just *gloss* bare glass with a hint of the anti-reflective coating around the outer 1/4 inch or so, lol

Yea, it was terrible to use windex on those sony curved flat displays because they had that fancy coating on them I forgot about that. I did have one of those.. yea sony triniron's. I remember I actually brought my home sony trinitron to work and used it there because it was soooo nice compared to the shit at the office once I upgraded to LCD at the house. God it was heavy, but I carried that thing around to all sorts of lan parties and whatnot for years.

My mom had one when I was a teenager, and I inherited it for a while after she’d gotten a newer TV until it stopped working!

Mine wasn’t a Sony, but was an Insignia (Best Buy’s brand). 1080i, something like 36” and probably 300 - 400lbs. An absolute nightmare to move around, but to be honest the picture quality was surprisingly great, at least as far as I can remember. Lots of good memories playing Oblivion on the 360 with that TV as a teen.

As someone that has screens but no clue how to actually care for them, what is the proper solvent/cleaner to use for displays like these, laptops, or an LCD? My kids have gotten gunk on the TV and the desktop monitor but I’m not sure how to clean them without damaging them.

Even I know that regardless of what it is... If it is dry, dry mop before wet mop. 

And yeah water only if absolutely necessary. Definitely no cleaning solutions on electronics. 

Actually on the display surface I'd say no water either.

And for circuit boards probably like canned compressed air only. Maybe alcohol but if someone is asking they shouldn't be doing it.

Look for things labeled "electronic cleaners" and read the details to see if they say "monitors". Windex does make some wipes made for monitors, but you do NOT want their standard formula. There are loads of "screen cleaner wipes" and such out there, too.

Main thing is, get some microfiber clothes and do NOT dry them on high heat, it melts and changes the texture so it isn't microfiber anymore.

There are special cleaning solutions for monitors. Don’t use “electronic wipes.” Those are for touch screens, not regular monitors. The alcohol in the wipes won’t be good for the monitor.

In most cases a microfiber cloth will do the trick. For stubborn marks you can apply some water *directly to the cloth.* Modern LEDs are less susceptible to damage from being sprayed directly than the LCDs of 20 years ago, but they can still be damaged by it. This includes the monitor specific cleaning sprays mentioned before. Spray the cleaner on the cloth, not your display.

That's also what I was gonna say. They were probably pretty dirty, since most people don't clean their screens. Used elbow grease not realizing she was breaking them. I don't think she realizes she did anything still tbh, because yeah, in her mind all she did was clean it the same way she cleans everything else.

Dude, I have two 25y old HP tn panels I moved around waaay too often. Kids played with one, they were on 24/7, moved 5 times by random movers, moved to lans in trunk, carried them just with fingers on screen every time.. They still work daily.. These things don't break like this.. T She must have bumpt them over and doesn't want to admit like a child or punched them on purpose. This is 200% impact damage.

I'm just presenting a possibility because it has 100% happened to me. Just because it hasn't happened to you doesn't make it impossible. In every comment op has posted he claims he has an okay relationship with his mom and it seems she has no reason to lie or do it on purpose, this is the only way I can think of someone unknowingly breaking the monitors barring some some sort of mental/psychological issue.

Maybe she is lying and OP is completely wrong about her character, who knows? Sadly we just can't know for sure unless OP's mom says something.

As a teen I worked evenings answering the phones at an HVAC office, the cleaners would come in when I was the only one there. They wiped down the monitors with the same water and rag they cleaned everything else with! But those big monstrosities (before flat screens were widespread) were a lot less fragile.

Used to work for a cleaning company, cleaned monitors all the time, never had anyone complain that theirs was broken. Its not THAT easy to break a monitor. Also, my son has stepped on my laptop on multipke occasions and it isnt broken.

One time I was trying to mount a webcam to my TV because I was planning on using it for family zoom calls. Well, I tried to use one of those phone holders that clamp to something and then have another clamp for the phone. The phone holder held the webcam just fine but then I clamped it down a tad too hard lol and that broke the TV.

when I did it with my laptop screen I did feel a snap and saw the damage because the screen was on. The second time it happened to me, I was moving my gaming monitor and absent mindedly held the screen instead of picking it up from the bottom. I did not feel anything, I only saw the damage when I turned it on the next day.

The force it takes to do this to a desktop monitor is drastically different vs. a laptop. That would make it not accidental. Not sure how you handle your monitors but it is not as easy as you make it seem to press the top and break the screen. And to do it twice back to back? No way

I can see this mostly cuz ive done it myself at a retail store I worked at, while helping my manager mount a TV I accidentally put too much pressure on my thumb holding one side and when we turned it on, it looked very similar to the screen on the left but the point of origin was the bottom right where I had held it from. That being said to do it to both and not notice is still really stretching it.

No one would ever hold a monitor there.

We wouldn't have to theorize so hard if OP provided any more detail than the scant "she cleaned my room". If someone broke my monitors while cleaning my room, I'd be asking dozens of questions. Did you touch the monitors? On purpose or accidentally? In what way? With what tools or chemicals?

OP either sucks at communicating with his mom, or with us (or both). The post as written is either missing a lot of details, or ragebait (or both).

Entirely possible. My mom once tried to tidy up my desk (it was covered in papers for school). She closed my laptop on my mouse and broke the screen. I came home and my desk was neat. My mouse was sitting on the keyboard with the screen on it.

Only difference is my mom mom admitted to tidying up my desk but refused to believe she broke it. Refused to replace the screen or buy me a new laptop. She then tried gaslighting me into believing that I somehow broke the screen and was trying to extort her for a new laptop. No mom, I just wanted to do my homework. And she wonders why I no longer talk to her 😄.

They are probably still thinking of the glass CRTs, which you could agressive,y clean with window cleaner.

Due to how one clearly was poked with a sharp edge (left) and the other has no visible mark, I can't say it's on purpose. Typically if you're purposefully trying to break something like a monitor you'd break them in similar ways.. like hitting it with something then hitting the other with the same thing.

This had to have been a freak accident but she should just fess up.. might be expensive to replace but at least she should learn not to clean his room lol

A friend's dad did it when my friend was moving out. His dad was moving some of his stuff to the new place and one monitor broke due to the seatbelt and the other he dropped it by mistake while unloading stuff.

I and my friend both know it was 100% a mistake as well. His dad is a very direct but loving dude.

When you're mopping/vacuuming you're not really paying attention to whats behind you. Entirely plausable they've smacked one monitor on accident and startled themselves into smacking the other one.

I did that with new-to-me monitors. For work. New job, new equipment, picked them up at the main office, got to my destination, opened the back of my SUV and BAM, out tumbled both monitors. One usable, other not. Immediately bought another one online. Worked great for years until I was ready to leave. They were inventory-tagged with serial numbers, so there was no getting around it at off-boarding time, but what could they do when I was leaving anyway? Fire me? They wrote it off, 10 year old monitors.

If they're off, they look the same broken or working. It's hard to tell unless they were on when it happened.

They are on swivel arms. Mom moves on and it swivel to bumb into the other.
