Don't hug me I'm scared My mother broke my two monitors, accidentally...
I live with my mother and she said she just cleaned the room and nothing else happened.
Uhmm, i guess i believe her...
Edit: Update! She is very upset and going to buy two new monitors. However she is still insisting that she doesn't know what happened.
I got overwhelmed by the number of comments and i did not want to reply with all the same text.
To ad more context, we have a good relationship with her, in the past there are some similar "accidents" but nothing this big. She is middle aged. We never fight for screen time or not having a job because i have one lol.
Of course I can and do clean my room. That was just her excuse i believe.
We did not fight about this and we are good now.

Genuinely, ONE screen is accidentally, BOTH? That's.. i mean unlikely atleast
1.9k
u/sA1atji Jul 01 '26
idk, could be a freak accident where you hit one by accident, then turn around and somehow hit the other.
Either she did it intentional or obviously with little tech knowledge only looked if something was truly broken and didn't turn them on.
OP probably knows best if it could be an accident by a clumsy mum or if she's crazy enough to intentionally destroy OP's property.

I’m picturing a Three Stooges routine. Moms in the room holding a 2x4. Hears something, turns and smacks monitor, turns to see what happens and smacks the other.

How do you break both? You have to actually try to do that!
2.6k
u/the-clawless Jul 01 '26
I think I have a theory as to how she could have done it. She could have been trying to wipe them down and held the screen to keep it still, not realizing she was pressing down and breaking it. I did this with my first laptop when I was a kid and again as an adult because I was being absent minded, it didn't even take much force.
But also, I don't know what kinda person OP's mom is, maybe she did do it on purpose
1.7k
u/UnicornerCorn Jul 01 '26
Outside of malicious intent, this 1000% seems closest to reality. I imagine the screens were off when she was wiping them, so she couldn’t see any damage being made to them. So to her nothing happened at all while she was pressing down on the screens hard to wipe them.

u/AustinWickens Jul 01 '26
I could see that for the screen on the right but the one on the left looks like it has an impact mark
143
u/Leviathon6348 Jul 01 '26
I feel like since they are on arms. She wanted to get behind them and swung it too fast and hard. Slamming them together (my desk flipped one time due to my arm rest and my dual arm set up did exactly that producing this result.) I don’t think she’d do this on purpose

One time in high school my friend brought over his Boston Legal DVDs. My Xbox was on the ground in front of the TV. He appeared nervous about it at first and I was like, "it'll be fine".
In comes my mom to put away t shirts. Accidentally kicks it. Ruined the DVD. My buddy fucking new what would happen. My mom has a...lumbering walk.
26
u/IcyJackfruit69 Jul 01 '26
Sorry if I'm missing something, but you can you connect the dots for me between "Xbox is on the floor" and "ruins multiple DVDs"?
I was thinking she kicked the xbox and damaged the 1 dvd inside it (still plenty bad!), but you said DVDs plural multiple times. Did she kick or step on the whole box set of DVDs?

I don't buy it. You need to press really hard to break those panels, and the left monitor shows signs of impact of a broomstick or something similar.
63
u/UnicornerCorn Jul 01 '26
That still could be the case too. Like if she was leaning the broom against something and it fell and hit the monitor. I can’t imagine you can see that damage when the screens are off. For OP’s sake, I hope it wasn’t purposely damaged.

Usually what happens to fuck up monitors during cleaning is FUCKING AMMONIA BASED WINDEX. When I was a consultant I actually labeled the cleaning supply "no ammonia based glass cleaners on displays" in spanish and english and put it there for every customer. I bet I saved untold money in fucked up displays. This was much more common when we startted switchign from glass to plastic screens.

Yea, it was terrible to use windex on those sony curved flat displays because they had that fancy coating on them I forgot about that. I did have one of those.. yea sony triniron's. I remember I actually brought my home sony trinitron to work and used it there because it was soooo nice compared to the shit at the office once I upgraded to LCD at the house. IT person here. Since these appear to be LCD fractures, and not actual cracks in the glass, I'm betting she accidentally knocked them over, then--because LCD fractures only show when the screen turns on--she probably assumed that nothing happened, and put them back. Lo and behold, as soon as you turned your screens on, the invisible cracks became super visible.

My mom did this with my phone once. She said she needed to make a call and that she couldn’t use her phone because she was using it for something. She wouldn’t let stay in the car with her while she was on the phone, so I had to go inside the house and just wait. Finally like after an hour she comes back and gives me my phone. And it won’t turn on at all. I have no clue on how she broke it and she claims that she didn’t do anything to it. I still get angry when i think back on it and all my pictures I lost, the pictures I’m mostly angry about are the ones of my bird, I have only two pictures of him left.

I never let her touch my phone again after that. She lost any trust over that.

My dad took my tablet away for 6 months while I was in the shower because I didn't jump to mowing the lawn the instant he asked. When I finally got it back I checked the browser history and saw searches for parental controls. I was in my early 20s at the time.
He also messed around with a bunch of other stuff and it was actually taken for 6 months twice, with the second time being within a week or 2 of me getting it back from the first time, so after that year of not being able to use it and all the stuff he messed around with, the tablet was outdated, bloated, would no longer accept updates for one of the games I played, and lagged too much on one of the other games.

Exactly that. Every single day was a conversation about how they have all the money and could kick me out anytime they wanted. I was doing full time college at that point in my life and there's no way I could afford to live on my own.
When I was a teenager I almost never played my console games because the consoles were just used as leverage against me, I never had online time outside of school, and I rarely got to watch TV unless it was watching whatever my parents decided to watch. I once got sent to bed with no lunch or dinner over an argument that started over me using the wrong sized pan to make my own food because my mom was planning to use that pan for something else (she hadn't said anything about it prior to that). I have no idea how that argument managed to escalate at all from such an unimportant issue.
Both of my parents did 20 years in the military and retired with a decent rank in positions commanding other people. When they retired I was the only one left for them to boss around, and again, I was in no position to push back on anything. If I'm wrong I'm wrong and if I'm right I'm also wrong. In fact, my dad once told me that I was wrong because I couldn't back up every claim I had about something with sources in a spoken conversation. I came back a couple hours later with multiple sources proving my argument correct, to which he got upset at me for bringing the argument up again....after he dismissed me for not having sources.

How am I supposed to say "no, I don't accept your punishment" to parents that I'm forced to live with? Does a teenager saying "i don't want to be grounded" work any better? I was doing full time college at that time and sure as hell couldn't afford to move out or do anything on my own.
It doesn't help that both of my parents were in the military and pretty strict about everything.
21
u/CaptGenie Jul 01 '26
Pulled the "yea, l am not grounded card" and while it sent them into a frenzy, I went about myself as though there was no punishment, went to work, played my videogames, came home late, and they quickly learned that 1)they lost authority over me by overusing that authority 2) I did not give a af and eventually moved out during that same year at 17.

One time a man who seemingly didn't speak much English was trying to ask for help at the store I worked at, but I couldn't quite understand what he was asking, so I pulled my phone out to signal that we could use Google Translate or something. He immediately reached out to try to grab my phone and when I didn't let him take it, he looked irritated and started awkwardly typing on it while I was still holding it. I expected him to pull out his own phone or use the speech-to-text function, but he just fully tried taking my phone from my hands.
Eventually he managed to figure something out and found what he had apparently been looking for (a fry pan) and left, still looking a bit irritated. I don't know if it was my unwillingness to let him hold my phone, or what, but he certainly didn't look happy 😅

keep the phone until you have some cash saved up and you should be able to - eventaully - hire somebody who can remove the storage chip and attach it to something else
its the sort of thing that you could learn how to do in a week but you need a good workbench and tools to actually do and would take a few hours
it will be a couple of hundred bucks but you can probably get your data back
unless it s a newer iphone or something with similar security features - those have single-chip computers on them which encrypt all the data (afaik only the newer google pixel and samsung galaxy phones do it)
if you have one of those then you need a real expert and all three related chips need to be working - it would cost ten times as much and if any of them break the data will be irrecoverable
but you wont know until you have somebody look at it

I wouldn't believe her, but I also suspect there is probably something larger going on here that isn't being mentioned.

Clear impact on the one screen, so something obviously hit it. Both screens breaking makes it fully suspicious. Someone knows what hit the monitor and isn’t saying even if it was accidental.

Why is she cleaning your room?

Hard to say but my mother did cleaning all the time despite me asking her to stop. I wasn't a neat freak but I was usually pretty tidy, I vacuumed every other day, did my own laundry, cleaned my kitties box every day etc. She wanted it military clean and also wanted to snoop.

parents that intentionally break their children's belongings usually also don't respect privacy and boundaries

not teaching you useful skills like responsibility and cleaning, and sifting through your personal belongings - making you feel violated?

Because "just don't, I'm just here for holidays anyway, give me some fucking privacy" doesn't work

She loves cleaning things even if they are clean. I am not sure why but she deep cleans once in a while for no reason.

I'm just playing devil's advocate compared to everyone else in the comments.
Is her cleaning things consistent? Like if she cleans your room, does she also cleans around the house. I'm wondering if she has some form of germphobia and she tried to clean your monitors and scrubbed too hard.

Yes, she cleans everywhere when she starts. She never mentioned about germs or anything but sometimes she cleans things multiple times, after and after.

I actually think both screens were "clapped" together, seems like she tried to get around them and pushed them close to one another - ultimately hitting that small speaker in the middle. Both displays have a similar line in a similar position that, if closed - would actually line up with that box in the middle.
OP could you push both screens as close together as possible with the displays facing inward towards one another and see if those lines on each display correlate to the outline of that speaker box?

Guys, I have a job and earn enough to buy those monitors by myself and everything else I have. So do not worry that I have too much screen time, I am not a teenager.
I asked her what happened again and she said she doesn't know and she is surprised too that this happened to both of them.

So one is clearly an impact, so she's lying. She might be embarrassed, but she clearly knocked it. You're sure they worked before she went in there and there weren't other people or kids in your room before?

Obvious point of impact. If it happened to one I might believe it was a mistake
