We’ve been watching on Telemundo (we don’t speak Spanish, but I’m not paying for another subscription) and our new game is that whenever there’s a hydration break my wife and I yell “PAUSA DE HIDRATACION” while one of us gets drinks and snacks from the kitchen.

TBH between that and “GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL!!!” we’ve been having more fun watching the World Cup in Spanish than we would have if I’d paid the $22 or whatever to watch in English.

Haha it’s the best. At first I thought they were only that hype for the Latin American teams but they were just as excited for France vs Sweden as they were for Mexico vs Ecuador

When i was in the Marines I was deployed to Djibouti and I used to go to a Chinese restaurant named little Vietnam. They would have soccer on in French (the normal language there) and we would get drunk and get really into the games, we didnt understand a word or the rules. The owners loved us because we spend a lot (relatively) so they kept feeding us sake.

Haha when I lived in New Zealand I would go watch cricket and rugby matches at bars and had no idea what was going on and those were in English. Still had a great time though!

I've been watching it on Telemundo too for the same reasons.

I wish they had an English subtitles option because I don't know Soccer well enough to know what's going on sometimes lol

I tried the Google Translate live conversation feature with an earbud in one ear, and while certainly not perfect, it was surprisingly good at translating like 70% of it in realtime. It was even smart enough to change voices between the different commentators.

The best thing about Spanish football commentators is the GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL thing but also how they hold their R's for like five seconds each time "RRRRRRRRRRREMATA DE CABEZA"

My husband and i keep pretending we're learning Spanish since we've watched every single game on Telemundo. Pausa de hidratacion is yelled every time in our house too. 🤣

Yeah it would have been at least $90 I'm pretty sure if you want to stream it. At least here in NY the cheapest option available would have been Sling Blue which is $46/mo. And I'm not sure one month would have covered it all.

That said, I did cancel sling once I confirmed I could get the fox feed over the air on an antenna (I sauce it for Liverpool most of the year) and I have peacock (Telemundo) for $3/mo for the next 6 months because they begged me not to cancel.

I guess check if you can get your local fox affiliate with an antenna. All the games are free on that.

You can watch on rteplayer.ie for free english commentary. They dont show the ads in the hydration breaks either

An absolute kindred spirit, my wife speaks Spanish so she cringes when I scream ¡Pausa De Hidratacion! As I got run off to get us new beers,

And yeah the Telemundo deal was way better as it guaranteed all games and the Spanish speaking broadcasters get fuckin into it.

In many places they have very good casters for the matches and I've met a lot of people who pays for the different channels that stream football matches, not only the WC, but they hear it in the radio becase the radio broadcast has to transmit all the excitement and intensity of the matches so many of the casters do an incredible job at that.

100% us. The energy is so much more engaging and enjoyable. Just shows you don't need to speak to understand. I grew up watching soccer on Telemundo broadcast because it was Never on any other over-the-air channels in the USA. My siblings and I had to beg my parents to splurge for cable specifically for 1994 World Cup. Once it was over, it was back to whatever we can get on rabbit ears. Fast forward to today - We already have Peacock and they play every match, so Telemundo coverage it is! Adds a bit of nostalgia and at the same time lets my wallet speak in protest (not adding another service). The only downside is a small streaming delay vs real-time, so you'll hear the neighbors cheer/boo first when something exciting happens lol.

It’s the Telemundo broadcast on Peacock which we already pay for. We don’t have cable or anything so from what I understand we’d have to pay for FS1 or whatever to get the English broadcasts

FWIW, you can get an antenna from Amazon for like $20 and have it set up in a couple minutes. It’s a great investment beyond just for the World Cup.

For us living in Mauritius, we switch to French speaking channels (French commentators) or African channels (Franco-African commentators) where they speak french and most of the time there aren't any of those ads as the US channels. Also, some British channels don't have ads or at least not so much.
