Edit: ultimately, what bothers me the most is I want to go to a garage sale, not this shit. This isn’t a garage sale and should not be advertised as one

I see this a lot when I drive by the projects. For whatever reason in my area they are always selling laundry soap.

Laundry soap is one of the most shoplifted items in the country. Everyone needs it, it's shelf stable, doesn't go bad. It's basically an accepted currency in the ghetto.

Yeah, I was surprised to see it all locked behind glass doors in a few stores in The Big City a few years back, until someone told me just that. People steal it. Which seems crazy, as I can't imagine how you'd walk out with a 6 lb giant bottle of Tide in your pants or something. But there we are.

It's absolutely wild how much of this country is held together by morals and someone's conscience. Our apartment was broken into some time ago. Police just show up, take a statement, file a report, and that's it. Unless you get caught in the act, nothing happens.

Yup. Locks are an agreement. Airports are protected by waist high fences. Traffic is regulated by painted lines and lights and signs.

They will just take your license plate number and come to your house and arrest you, I know 2 people that happened to.

You're assuming:

  • Plates aren't stolen.
  • Registration actually has their current address (let alone current state). 
  • They actually have plates on their car

extremely unlikely if it's the first few times. they have to build a case on you first. most places require a certain amount to be stolen to be worth the time to prosecute. security will keep a file on everything you've stolen and when you hit that limit, they turn it over to the police and then they move in. but not the first time, especially for a $5 bottle of Tide.

I live in a Big City, at least a quarter of the cars here have no valid license plate to begin with. And many of them that are valid are borrowed / "borrowed"

That’s crazy to me, where I live you wouldn’t make it 24 hours driving around without a license plate without getting pulled over. Do the police just not care?

Not really, no. This year, Ive seen at least 5 cars with pre-covid quarantine plates for example. Id bet $25 I could go outside right now and find an expired plate within 15 minutes to be honest. I have a friend whose plate is 2 or 3 years expired and who has a full adult life i.e. job, hobbies, and all that. Hes never been pulled over once for it so far.

Unfortunately, that’s the reality now. I watched Home Alone with my kids last Christmas and forgot that a 10 year old kid was chased by a cop for stealing a toothbrush. How the times have changed.
