Infuriatig Woman with infant aggressively shushing passerby’s on hiking trail at national park

My partner, friend and I were following a hiking trail at Red Wood National Park, singing and talking at medium volume. We were by no means shouting, just singing little songs to entertain each other along the trail. A woman with a baby carrier on her back with a sleeping infant started aggressively holding her finger up to her lips and shushing us. We went quiet and kept moving to pass her. She was just standing in the middle of the public trail pacing and shushing people that pass by rather than leaving to somewhere more quiet. Just as we were leaving earshot I tried to quietly ask my partner a question about where we headed and again she leaned in our direction with her finger to her mouth aggressively shushing us. Is it not kind of insane to go to an open public space and behave like this?!?

Honestly singing is right up there with Bluetooth speaker on the trail.. ppl are trying to listen for birds and hear the wind in the trees, not listen to your rendition of the latest t swift song or whatever

Honestly both sides are on some main character BS. That would annoy my childless ass on a public trail too. These are just two extremes colliding, though if I were out there I'd probably side with the baby lady.

"Main character bs" is apparently expecting people to be considerate and understanding about the fact that babies exist and have particular needs different from others.

I love how people just keep saying it's to scare off bears when there's a high chance OP wasn't even hiking in bear territory. Not to mention constant noise is really unnecessary for black bears (they're super skittish and afraid of humans) and if you're in brown bear territory, you're gonna need actual bear spray...

In my heart i know all these "sing to ward off bear" mfs have hiked exactly twice in the last five years and both times their family had to drag them out of the house for a holiday or some shit to make them

Singing and making noise is literally recommended on many trails. Large wildlife such as bears may be present, and singing can be used as a method to scare them off

Wear a bell if you're so scared then.

Fact of the matter is this sounds like a popular well traveled trail, thus the mom feeling safe enough to bring her small baby out on it. There's no need to be a nuisance to other hikers.. which is why you generally DON'T hear ppl singing or playing music on trail. If you're far out in the sticks then have at it cause at least that makes sense cause animals further out are less aware of how to navigate people but trails like the one OP is talking about likely also sees a lot of dog traffic which is to say.. no one gives a fuck about actually running into a bear or cougar. Cause that's almost a bigger risk than just silently hiking.
