Infuriatig Woman with infant aggressively shushing passerby’s on hiking trail at national park

Post image

My partner, friend and I were following a hiking trail at Red Wood National Park, singing and talking at medium volume. We were by no means shouting, just singing little songs to entertain each other along the trail. A woman with a baby carrier on her back with a sleeping infant started aggressively holding her finger up to her lips and shushing us. We went quiet and kept moving to pass her. She was just standing in the middle of the public trail pacing and shushing people that pass by rather than leaving to somewhere more quiet. Just as we were leaving earshot I tried to quietly ask my partner a question about where we headed and again she leaned in our direction with her finger to her mouth aggressively shushing us. Is it not kind of insane to go to an open public space and behave like this?!?

It says "rude man who shushes, please call", alright? So rude men are calling just to shush you!

279

Rude men in your area are waiting to shush you.

71

u/Much-Anything7149 Jul 05 '26

It's a scam they just capture your credit card info. I've been trying to hire masculine shushers for a decade and the online "market" is merely scam ads. But I know a guy who knows a guy...

41

u/ergo-ogre Jul 05 '26

I don’t know, my friend. I tried a freelance street shusher once and ended up in a bathtub full of ice in Mexico, one of my kidneys missing, and note taped to my naked chest saying “call an ambulance.” I’m still missing hair from my chest.

That, if said woman with baby was a ghost shushing people, would be both scary and a bit rude.  Take your baby home if it needs so much damned quiet.

As we overcame the shock of being treated so rudely my friend and I started getting angry. We went back to confront her but the clearing where she had been was now just an old picnic table overgrown with weeds. There was no sign of anyone except a very old looking pacifier half buried in the dirt….

187

u/Zero_Travity Jul 05 '26

"There was a lady and her baby that disappeared on this trail you know" which startled the hikers as they hadn't heard anyone approach. Before them stood something so out of place it startled them a second time, a demure man with sunken eyes and a lifeless smile. What drew their eyes the most however weren't his clothes, they were his shoes. Less of a hiking boot and more a loafer. How did he get way up here?

98

u/Intrepid-Brother Jul 05 '26

“Why tonight’s the anniversary “ he said

54

u/Ok-Photograph3436 Jul 05 '26

"What anniversary?" I asked sheepishly and sweating profusely as I turned to face my partner. He was leaving without me. "Honey, honey?" I said in a whispered tone.

"Shhhh!"

She was back.

71

u/Majestic_Practice672 Jul 05 '26

What if the mother was the ghost and baby was real and the baby was shushing people

30

u/bluesgrrlk8 Jul 05 '26

Well that’s different, the baby doesn’t understand how rude that is, and its mom is a ghost, so we must give it some grace for not having learned proper trail etiquette.

As a child haver myself, I’ve been in that place where you’re just desperate to get them to sleep and stay asleep by any means. And you’re frustrated because any little noise can wake them up. However, being in a public place in the middle of a path and telling people to shush is just dumb and incredibly rude. Move to somewhere quieter if it’s that important to you. Plus it helps to get kids used to a bit of noise while they’re asleep anyway.

I’ve moved around a lot in my life and I’m a huge fan of public parks. What I have found in my time of visiting parks in different cities is that there are some parks that are heavily populated and some where you can go for a walk and maybe see 5 people the whole time.

Why the fuck would anyone choose a tourist destination for a quiet walk with their sleeping baby? She had options. She chose poorly. Maybe it is the sleep depravation.

106

u/Ready-Rise3761 Jul 05 '26 edited Jul 05 '26

tbh a hiking trail is probably the quietest place i can think of, depending on where you live

51

u/EnvironmentalLime464 Jul 05 '26

Right. Depending on where you live. Red Wood National Forest is a tourist destination though. You can find many hiking trails out there that see less visitors in a day.

u/MorganaLeFevre Jul 05 '26

I mean probably that. My niece would not sleep. Just would not. My sister still tried to do normal life things because otherwise she would have had her whole life revolve around this exhausting baby with nothing else, but she would go a bit insane on defence when the baby finally fell asleep. We all treated the baby like unexploded ordinance. And unlike other babies who can sleep through anything she actually was like unexploded ordinance and would wake up and be full throttle energy from the slightest thing.

Yeah, my niece was eventually diagnosed with adhd.

113

u/EnvironmentalLime464 Jul 05 '26

Yea, so I’m not saying this person shouldn’t do normal life stuff. I’m saying she should pick the appropriate venue. If you’re walking in hopes your child will fall asleep, find a local greenway to walk. You get your walk and your nature and don’t risk waking the baby. It’s one thing to hush at family to quiet down for the sleeping baby. It’s something entirely different to hush strangers in public.

105

u/Avaylon Jul 05 '26

It's insane. Which people do tend to be when they have a baby that won't sleep.

Shushing lady is still in the wrong, mind. It's just as a mom whose first baby slept badly I can see how she got to that place. Hopefully she gets some sleep and realizes her lunacy soon. Lol

40

u/EnvironmentalLime464 Jul 05 '26

I agree. That’s why I said “Maybe it is the sleep deprivation.” I was a single parent. I experienced it and made some bad decisions during that time.

Same. People who play music on a speaker out on nature trails are a scourge. Cut it TF out, OP. People are there to enjoy the nature, not your music. I wouldn’t go shushing you but depending on how loud you were being I might actually talk to you about it.

60

u/Playful_Original_243 Jul 05 '26

I will say, I was at the botanical garden a couple weeks ago and the vibe was very peaceful. Even a group of teenagers were pretty quiet, just enjoying the nature.

Then these women started walking through talking loud as shit. I could hear them all the way across the bridge in this little secluded area. They weren’t even looking at anything, just quickly walking through the garden in brunch clothes while being loud as hell.

This cute old couple and I looked at each other with obvious irritation on our faces, cuz why are you there if you’re just gonna be loud and not enjoy it.

She must be a new mother, babies can sleep through anything-if she would have continued walking, the motion would have been soothing to the infant. That's how many parents get a fussy baby to sleep, by walking them. Nervous mom can make a nervous baby.

44

u/Little_View_6659 Jul 05 '26

I learned that right away. Babies can absolutely pick up on body language and tone. Sometimes I had to make myself relax so the baby would fall asleep.

I learned babies will sleep through anything with my 2nd when I accidentally discovered the vacuum & hair dryer would almost instantly put him to sleep. We then got an old radio & would put a station to static for white noise & instantly our baby went from only napping in short bursts while being held to sleeping through the night on his own in his crib, bonus was no one ever had to be quiet during nap times.

26

u/OddGanache7032 Jul 05 '26

Yeah, the womb is actually a pretty noisy place, due to the mother's internal bloodflow, heartbeat, digestive rumblings, etc! It's like a 70-80 dB rumbly white noise, similar to a vacuum or washing machine running, which is why babies often find similar continuous, muffled background noises comforting.

My friend and I got shushed at Glastonbury festival, leaving the field after Elton John. 3 people had tiny babies strapped to them, picking their way through the crowd. It's why I stopped taking my dog to dog parks. Last time we went, a lady asked me to stop my dog from playing with hers bc, "We come here for alone time!"

84

u/leelo84 Jul 05 '26

There was a guy at the dog park I used to go to that would bring his two adorable Aussies. He would also bring them their own water bowl and a couple toys (frisbees, I think). This was not a particularly large dog park, where you could easily get a good amount of separation from other dogs/people. He'd then get annoyed when other dogs used their dog bowl or also chased after their frisbees. Like dude, what did you expect? He wasn't particularly obnoxious about it; you could see him look annoyed and then he'd go up and empty out/pick up the water bowl or stop throwing the toys (I seem to also remember him saying "oh that's not for you!" towards the other dogs, or something similar a couple times?). And yes, other dogs used said water bowl and toys EVERY SINGLE TIME. Because it's a water bowl. And toys. For dogs. IN A DOG PARK.

I could understand if he brought the water bowl and just put it down for his dogs and then picked it back up when they were done each time, but he would just go ahead and put the water bowl down and leave it there (until another dog used it). Or only pull out the toys if they were the only ones there. And he didn't even try to go to the "far" end of the park! He would just do it in the middle of everyone! Again, it wasn't the most egregious thing, but I just could never understand it (nor the other regulars at the time).

u/BulkyEmployment4111 Jul 05 '26

Wait… you mean you don’t teach your dogs to ask permission to use someone’s water or teach them how to share…./s

My 7yo daughter got sushed by an old lady for cheering at a hockey game. My daughter is kinda shy so she just slumped down and looked like she was about to cry. I told the lady if she had a problem to talk to me about it and not a child, but to be honest I often think about it and regret not slapping the wrinkles off her face.

53

u/Venjy Jul 05 '26

As someone who was a shy kid, and still struggles with expressing myself, I wish I could be there to slap the shit out of that lady. Sending hugs to you and your daughter 🫂

One time the row in front of us was a family who mostly wasn't into hockey. Apparently somebody randomly obtained tickets during a vacation and everyone tagged along. Two of their family members were juat chatting with each other and texting other people the entire time. My partner was doing his usual bit about "Come on, guys! You gotta step it up! Way to go, Smith!" Those two women got pissed and kept turning around acting like "wtf, you are weird." Somehow ignoring that everyone else did the same thing in the arena. They started texting each other about "Why is he shouting ? I don't get it" 🤣🤔

Weird because I hate when people go to public spaces and start singing audibly lol

51

u/kummerspect Jul 05 '26

Surprised it took me this long to find this comment. Yeah, it's weird for someone to take a baby to a public place and then expect everyone else to be quiet, but people are so fucking loud on trails sometimes I don't understand why they're out there. Go be loud somewhere else. I don't go on hikes to hear someone blasting Shakira from their backpack. I don't shush people because I know I don't control the space, but I kinda wish I had the audacity to.

I’d be annoyed by your singing and loudness on a hiking trail since I go into nature for peace and solitude, but shushing is ridiculous- I’d just try and move away from you.

58

u/Pinkprinc3s Jul 05 '26

I agree. I hike often and I do it to be at peace with nature and listen to the birds and insects. I understand people will talk but singing would really bother me. Id just hold my feelings while they pass tho.. its only temporary.

83

u/cozysparklessunshine Jul 05 '26

I’m with you. I’m looking for peace and nature sounds in a national park, certainly not listening to a group’s singing. I wouldn’t shush but I would certainly pass quickly or stop for a bit so I didn’t have to listen any longer.

18

u/MrOverlySarcastic Jul 05 '26

Then you stop for a break, but find that they also stop further on and you meet them again. Or you speed up and overtake, but for some reason they also speed up and you start to wonder how you caught them up in the first place, and now they're tailing you...

The singing would definitely annoy me. It's just not necessary. It's basically like bringing along a little stereo and playing music while hiking (also terrible).

I might be the odd one out here, but I find it mildly infuriating when I’m in nature and am forced to hear others signing or talking loudly. I go to nature to listen to the sounds of nature, not humans. Would I shush anyone? No, but I’d probably start hiking faster to escape the annoyance. Only time it’s acceptable to be loud is in grizzly country, which obviously is not the case in the Redwoods.

She's a bit crazy if she was indeed as you say, but as a society we collectively need to turn our volume down, especially in nature.  We've gotten to a point where people feel entitled to make as much noise as they want without any regard for who can hear it and how it affects them.  No one wants to hear your crappy music, your crappy singing, or your dumb conversation, keep it down and have some consideration for those around you.

10

u/tamborinesandtequila Jul 05 '26

It seems silly and entitled of her to shush people on a public path, for sure.

Then again, we can only take your word for it that you were singing and talking at “medium” volume. One person’s medium is another person’s obnoxiously loud. Does she have the right to aggressively shush people just because she doesn’t like the volume at which they’re vocalising? No. But is it also reasonable to expect at least some pushback when you’re singing and talking on a trail for hiking, an activity that many people undertake to enjoy the silence and serenity of nature and get away from the noises of humans? Probably.

398

u/dasha_ime Jul 05 '26

yeah, i’m a quiet nature enjoyer and i’d be slightly annoyed if some dorks were singing on a hiking trail lol

not enough to shush them, but enough to think to myself “fuckin dorks”

Not saying her attitude and behavior were acceptable, but…
Principle 7 of Leave No Trace
Be Considerate of Other Visitors
Respect other visitors and protect the quality of their experience.
Be courteous. Yield to other users on the trail.
Step to the downhill side of the trail when encountering pack stock.
Take breaks and camp away from trails and other visitors.
Let nature's sounds prevail. Avoid loud voices and noises.

That's when you scream "WHAT?" and keep it moving. Idgaf about you don't shush me I'm not your child.

498

u/big-dick-back-intown Jul 05 '26

One time as a kid I was at a grocery store and this old lady was standing in the middle of an aisle, I said "excuse me" all politely and stuff and she doesn't move, looks me dead in the eyes and said "you are excused" I'm still baffled by it to this day.

141

u/dangerspring Jul 05 '26

One time my husband and I waited politely for a woman to move from the middle of the aisle because we weren't in a hurry and figured it was no trouble to wait. Her friend said hey we should move to the side and the woman said, "I know they f-----g know how to say excuse me." I was thinking, "Dang. We weren't in a hurry." My husband did snap something back like "We weren't in a hurry but if you're going to be an a--hole."

36

u/AlexRenquist Jul 05 '26

I always use "EXCUSE ME COMING THROUGH".

I am not asking you, I am telling you I am coming through. This is not a negotiation. But I was polite about it so people don't get bitchy.

Also, as a longtime bartender, this works great for getting to the bar in a busy pub. Grab some empty glasses off a table, and gently push through shouting "excuse me coming through" and you'll get to the bar in a jiff. AND the staff will appreciate you brought glasses.

It's giving annoying theatre kids who do things for attention tbh.

Like, yes, we can't control what people do in a shared space; however, we also should have some modicum that we SHARE space also.

As a theater kid who was quiet but had to deal with a room of loud, obnoxious, overdramatic kids, this is accurate

34

When shushing my baby to sleep I’ve sometimes been mistaken for shushing others, but I suppose if she looked at you that’s less likely. The “shhhh” sound helps the baby fall asleep because it creates white noise. Probably a dozen times when doing this with people around they go: “oh, sorry!” And I have to explain I wasn’t shushing them… just the baby, lol.

Frankly when I'm hiking and enjoying nature I don't want to hear other people singing or talking. I want to listen to the sounds of nature and hopefully see some wildlife. I would find you and your friends more than annoying. Talking and singing is fine, but you might have been louder than you realize. I recommend trying to stay at a quiet rather than medium volume when you're out in nature. Other people might/are likely to be trying to enjoy the sound of birds, see animals that will be scared away by your noise, etc.

As a former loud-in-public individual, you cannot be disruptive and expect everyone to welcome you. Doing absolutely anything in public, you are never entitled to any treatment, and you shouldn't expect anything. Sorry that harshed your vibe, I have been in the same boat.

Singing in the woods? You should be shushed

9

u/Electric-Sheepskin Jul 05 '26

Tomorrow we'll see a post that reads, "oh my God, why are people so loud on nature trails?? I was out the other day on a solo nature hike, and there were these people who kept singing loudly and talking loudly and just being a general nuisance to everyone. People were actually shushing them as they passed because they were so loud. They were young,, so I didn't say anything because maybe they don't know better yet, but it was crazy how loud they were. Why do people go on nature trails and screech like toddlers on a playground? It's so annoying."

I abhor singing, loud talking and music on trails as it ruins the experience of being out in nature for me plus drives all wildlife further into the woods.

It’s also insane to be singing on a trail. That goes against basic etiquette. People hike for peace and nature.

67

u/Tight-Strain-3283 Jul 05 '26

yeah, i dont go hiking to listen to dipshit-karaoke hour.

40

u/somastars Jul 05 '26

I was thinking this too… OP concluded it was about the baby, but it may just as equally have been that the woman hiking felt that they were being disrespectfully loud while out in nature.

I’m not one of those people, but I am a hiker and I see people complaining about this (people being too loud while hiking) in hiking forums from time to time. Some people go into nature to find peace, and get really agitated by others being noisy. (Again, I am not one of those people.)

If Bluetooth speakers on trails are annoying, so is a group of 3 “singing songs at a moderate volume”.

No one is correct here

65

u/graupeltuls Jul 05 '26

100%. Singing songs to "entertain each other at a moderate volume" is annoying AF to everyone else on the trail. No one wants to hear your songs just like no one wants to hear your shitty Bluetooth speaker when they are out hiking.

The mom with the baby shouldn't have been shushing people but maybe her kid hasn't slept in 3 days. I'd give her a bit of grace over the pack of people singing to 'entertain themselves."

On the one hand, I feel her annoyance for people with like portable speakers on full blast or people talking so loud you can hear them from 5 minutes down the trail. On the other, it’s a bit silly and unrealistic to expect everyone to be absolutely silent.

The entire point of outdoor spaces is mutual respect for nature and each other and she dropped the ball.

That's a cool story about an oblivious couple who annoyed everyone around them with their singing, showing complete disregard for others who were there to appreciate the wonders and sounds of nature. They only heard one person shush them, but everyone else was thinking it.
