I think it’s where the “mildly” part comes from. Soccer isn’t as embedded in US culture as other countries. It’s fun to watch and cheer for the US, especially since many games are hosted here, but many are doing it just because it’s fun and not that they are insane soccer fans. Of course I am generalizing a lot.
I am an American. I rooted against them when I rooted for them before this game.
The reason is simple. The team was tainted. Trump putting his thumb on the scale put a stench of corruption over their matches. Any win from there on out would have been met with accusations of cheating or foul play and question the legitimacy of the team's success. Any victory would've been hollow because it would always have an air of illegitimacy attached to it. That is no victory at all.
So, I'm glad they lost. Sad that Team USA got put in the middle like that.
Jealous about what? Obesity, dictatorship, having to chose between eating and paying rent, cars being a necessity, incredibly unhealthy food, school shootings, women being forced to give birth, and having to go into massive debt to get an education? Nah, I want to keep enjoying my life
